I've just read Mark Steel's very witty and very moving book about his experience of throat cancer and he also mentioned the link with oral sex.
It had honestly never crossed my mind that there was a link before I read the book and I agree that it in no way suggests "blaming" the nost recent partner.
I think it reflects the prevalence of HPV during the 1970s and 1980s when lots of people were having sex with more than one person.
Prior to then, sex was largely within marriage and often focused on male pleasure. Who else remembers the shock of the oral sex episode in The Women's Room?
As someone who grew up in that era, the focus of sexual health information was all around PIV sex or, following the AIDS panic, anything involving semen. I don't remember anything about the risk of cunnilingus except possibly a reference to dental dams in something linked to women's prisons i vaguely remember watching.
I guess the HPV vaccination program has presumably reduced the risk of genital warts leading to oral cancer in later life for younger people now. But I don't see anything wrong in those of us who are now later in life reflecting on the consequences of choices we made back then when we knew less.
