To dislike my name

My name has three syllables and honestly decades on I STILL hear my mothers voice screeching it with the emphasis on the second syllable and I really dislike my own name!

Wondering if anyone else hates their name?

Thanks but he doesn’t mind. Not everyone gets as butthurt as people on MN, thankfully.

That’s not how you wrote it though.

Not minding isn't the same as liking it.

I’m a Clare…I hate it…

Change it then.

I’m a Victoria and I hate it! So it’s nice to hear people do like it!
I mean, there’s nothing really wrong with it, but it’s so fussy and formal. I don’t like Vicky so everyone calls me my full name, but it feels so frilly and cold at the same time somehow. Four syllables!
I’d love a simpler, elegant name like Sophie, Anna or Zoe.
i did try changing it in one workplace in my early 20s but it just felt really pretentious so I never did it again.

I have known several Victorias known as Tor

Nobody bats an eyelid if someone changes their surname due to marriage so why should your forename be any different. I hated the full version of my forename as a child and fought to be known as the shortened version. I got married and changed my surname and people just accepted it. I got divorced and reverted to my maiden name and kept my shortened forename and again it was never questioned. I remarried and changed my name again but now I use both the long and short versions of my first name as both sound ok with my surname. I’ve also had many nicknames at work over the years (and I’ve come up with nicknames too) which have stuck with the people who gave me them. I like the nicknames, they're a term of endearment and make me smile.

Our daughter has a middle name and has gone through phases of wanting to be known as one or the other but I don’t mind and don’t mind being corrected when she tells me off for getting it wrong.

i honestly don’t see why it’s such a big deal

OP you could wait till the kids leave primary school and you leave the school runs behind - no more school gates to worry about and the freedom/new start feeling is perfect for a minor life refinement like a name change.
You absolutely should just go for it - life’s too short to just lump along with something you hate when it’s so easy to fix. People will admire you for having the wherewithal to just do it!
Think of all the life changes people go through - divorce, moving house/job, boob jobs etc etc - it’s noones business why etc, just stop being a scaredy cat and go for it! You’ll love the feeling of being brave and taking control of something that’s bugged you for so long. Once you get through the initial period of people forgetting or asking why it’ll just become your name and you can enjoy it 🤩

I have a man’s name. I very much dislike it but it feels disrespectful to my parents to change it.

whyidontlikemyname · Yesterday 07:57

I really don’t want to change it. I appreciate the suggestions but it would draw attention to it and myself in a way that ironically is what I don’t like about current name. I’d just feel like an idiot and like I was a kid messing about. I don’t think you can really compare it to surnames either.

I have known a couple of Tories for Victoria @Viennita , but that may be worse depending on your political leaning! I know what you mean though as I don’t like Vicky either or Liz.

My mother's cousin was Vic. I thought Victoria was more glamorous!

My name is Cheryl. I’m not keen on it I prefer classic names and I can’t imagine anyone calling their baby Cheryl now.

my Mum said she liked the names Lydia Caroline and Charlotte which I wish she’d used instead, oh well.

The worst thing about it is when people nickname me Chez or Chezza, I bloody hate them, it sounds chavvy and I am not chavvy. Sometimes gets shortened to Che or Cher which I don’t mind

I changed my first name when I was 31 to a name I’d loved my whole life. I’ve now been known by my “new” name longer than I was the original name. It suits me so much better too.

BobbleBear · Yesterday 09:02

I changed my name as a teen (it’s similar to my given name) and it’s on all my legal documents now inc. marriage certificate.

I didn’t need to bother changing it by deed poll as it was unnecessary. I’m in my 60’s.

I also have a couple of friends who completely changed their first names in their 40’s and 50’s so you can choose to do it at any time. As others have pointed out, no-one bats an eyelid when you get married and change your surname. I got married in my late 40’s and went with his surname because I much preferred it to mine.

@Viennita
I knew one that was nn Ria, much nicer than Vicky I thought (was about three years before I found out that was actually her name)

SpicyPercy · Yesterday 18:30

We got family names, my full name (married surname) is very unique and I have never met or seen someone with the same name. My name and maiden name, never met anyone with the same name either. But have seen it in writing.

I like my name.
