To dislike my name

My name has three syllables and honestly decades on I STILL hear my mothers voice screeching it with the emphasis on the second syllable and I really dislike my own name!

Wondering if anyone else hates their name?

Do you think that there’s a possibility that whatever your name the memory of your mother screeching it would have ruined it?

bridgetreilly · 07/10/2026 19:38

If it’s a three syllable name, surely there’s some shortened nickname version you could use instead?

fumingrightnow1 · 07/10/2026 19:38

I don't hate my name but I don't particularly like it either I wouldn't off chose it, its just a bit meh

B0D · 07/10/2026 19:39

I’ve never liked mine for two reasons
1 - it doesn’t roll off the tongue

2.- it doesn’t suit me (I think). For me it sounds girly / feminine and I’m a tomboy

I’ve put up with it and grudgingly accept it

Possibly. I think one of the problems is my name has never had positive associations for me. People get it wrong, I don’t like correcting them and mostly they ignore you anyway, and ugh I just don’t like it.

Would you honestly not find it a bit weird if someone you’d worked with for years or the mother of one of your child’s friends or a friend you’d had a friendship with for decades suddenly wanted to be called an entirely different name? I would. It would feel false and artificial and I’d keep calling them their original name and having to correct myself. Your name and identify are very much interlinked, it isn’t like dying your hair a different colour or something.

Is it any different to a woman changing her surname?

ThatsMyName77 · 07/10/2026 20:22

whyidontlikemyname · 07/10/2026 18:32

I think changing it would be way too difficult tbh. I might have considered it if I could live my life over at 18 when I went to university or something but as it is suddenly insisting everyone calls me Sally or something seems a bit pretentious if I’m honest.

Namechanged fot this!!
So this post made me laugh. If anyone watched "fresh meat" there was a girl called Oregon but her name was actually melissa
Thats my name. I dont "mind" it. But I wish I had a more classical name like catheryn or elizabeth or victoria. I know so many melissas its insane. It was too common in the early 90s late 80s cohort that there are now 4 in my friendship group!! Even if i had been a Melody or Melandra would be better imho

eggandonion · 07/10/2026 20:34

I hate my name.
I was called after a nice aunt...her name was popular in the 1920s. So I was saddled with an old lady name when people were called Alison and Gillian and Lesley.
My horrible name is now trotted out on name threads as a lovely classic. I use a glamorous made up name in local coffee shop.

Yes, I think it is very different. I don’t think of myself as my surname. Your first name is interlinked with your identity in a way that is not quite the same as your surname. After all, teachers are known as Mrs Davis or Mr Jones for that reason: to create a bit of distance and a more formal sort of relationship.

I use DDs name because I can’t be bothered spelling mine out for people and then they shout out THE WRONG NAME grr

I dislike mine. It's a 3 syllable name with the stress on the middle syllable.
It doesn't sound good with the surname.

It's something like Dorina Nighall
Too different and spelling/pronunciation issues

Shoguner · 07/10/2026 20:47

I legally changed my first name, it did not take long for my parents and siblings to call me by the new name first time without correcting. Dh has only ever known my as my new name only. Fortunately my parents were really supportive of the name change so I didn't have any backlash to it and calling me by my birth name.

A few people found out I had changed my name and were desperately trying to find out what my birth name was. I just replied instead of wondering what the name is maybe consider why someone would want to change it. It could be running from DV situation for example.

Dh has had a couple of people at work change their gender identity so they used to be Peter and are now Kate. He said it was just a mental reset before saying their name.

If you don't like your name why not try a new name at home first then see if it works for you. I think these days there would be short shrift if someone deliberately used your previous name intentionally at work.

IwanttoWFH · 07/10/2026 20:47

I didn’t use to like my name. It’s not unusual but not commonly used. Most people would have it as a middle name, I guess.
I think it’s a bit “meh”. You can’t abbreviate it. People often get it wrong and call me similar names.
But, I’ve never met another person with my name. I am grateful I’m not one of many i.e Katie, Sarah, Kelly, Rachel etc.

MamaBobo · 07/10/2026 20:56

My Mum was going to call me Nicola and someone (who I’d really like to get my hands on) told her I’d be called “knickers” at school. On the basis of that she changed her mind and I’m saddled with a horrible 70s name that I absolutely hate. A name that conjures up an image of short skirts and white stilettos. I knew a lot of Nicolas at school and not one was ever called “knickers”. I really wish I had changed my name when I was younger but I left it too late. I spend most of my time outside the UK now and thankfully my name means nothing here.

WedsAgain · 07/10/2026 21:00

Mine was a total car crash. Clunky, old-lady first name, middle with an obscure spelling and far too many letters in both that were repeated again in the surname. I seriously wonder if my parents even bothered sounding it out at any point before going to the register office.
Thankfully dh’s surname is perfectly normal and works beautifully with the nickname that I’ve used since childhood.
In comparison, both kids like their names so hopefully we did something right.

Funnywonder · 07/10/2026 21:08

My name regularly comes up on lists of the most hated names on here. A name that will NEVER come back😅 I’m always a bit shocked by the vitriol. When I was growing up in the seventies, almost everyone had an auntie or granny with my name, so it was already well past its sell by date but not a classic.

I wouldn't find it weird at all. When I moved cities, I intended to change mine, but the house move etc was so stressful I didn't get around to it. Now I wish I had.

Brainstorm23 · 07/10/2026 21:20

Hate my name. It's very dated to the 80s. I once asked my parents where on earth it came from and they said "oh the minister called about the christening and we had to pick something".

You think so but, actually, it is fairly non-eventful. One of my friends changed their name and I barely remember what they were called before because I've used their new name for the last 20 years.
I have a very long, very pretentious-sounding Greek name with a funny spelling. I've never particularly liked it or the short version my parents used. Plus, it's is often anglified in the UK and so it is pronounced incorrectly which makes me twitch every time. So I picked a short version of it that I felt comfortable with and that's what I've been using since my early 20s. Most of my family apart from my granny and my mum use the new name and it's been absolutely fine.
I don't feel as though my identity has been damaged by changing my name.

AmnesiacDream · 07/10/2026 21:21

I don't hate my name but I don't particularly like it and was adamant not to use it for our kids. Changing it just too much faff, though. I changed my last name and wished I hadn't, even though I didn't particularly like it.

Flannelfeet · 07/10/2026 21:22

I hatw my name too. Its mhairi 😢

HollywentLightly · 07/10/2026 21:30

I don't like my name, but love my middle name and really wish I'd assumed it earlier in life. I have the very 80s female version of my dad's name.

Ahh I love Mhairi.

I really like my full name, but no one has ever used it, as it just wasn't really the thing in the 80s to use the full version. So I'm a Vicky and I bloody hate it. It's just feels like such a lazy name - bland, uninspiring, middle-ground yuck.

JustAnotherWhinger · 07/10/2026 21:37

As a kid I’d have loved all of the names mentioned on this thread as my drugged up mother chose Starlight.

imagine going to school and that’s your name 🤦🏻‍♀️

And so so many people assumed I wasn’t actually my father’s child as I was 8, 9, and 10 years younger than my siblings. Who all had names so common they all had our surname letter after their name at school as there was another one of them.

Edited

I honestly hate it, i hate telling people that my name is pronounced marry and not varry 😡, oh, and nobody can bloody spell it right either 🤣. Victoria is a beautiful name, but yep every Victoria i was at school with was a vicky.
