By adults I mean they die between 18 and 70 years of age. This includes some of my friends who died of cancer, but it still surprises me that the figure is so high. Bu5 maybe it's well known and it's just me who had no idea?

I would have said higher. Lost a few friends long before 70.

Spidey66 · 07/10/2026 18:45

My dad died at 56, my mum 67, and a close friend at 63. It doesn’t surprise me.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 07/10/2026 18:49

I thought it would be higher.
Depending on the area and lifestyle it can be uncommon to live past 70.
I hope that I make it to 70.
Both of my parents died before 70. No aunt or uncle made it to 80.

I'm surprised 78% of adults survive past 70

Me too

Guitarbandit · 07/10/2026 19:03

The figure being that low surprised me! Only 12%?

Based on my relatives I must have bad genes!!

Surroundedbyfools · 07/10/2026 19:04

I’m not shocked by this but my grandparents all died in their seventies and my father died in his fifties so that makes probably skews my view of things

I got the figure from ai to those asking.

Hmm

Better to read some reliable stats yourself, AI gives unreliable answers.

SpaghettiHettie · 07/10/2026 19:13

Like PP I am surprised its so low.

DM was one of 4, 3 died before they were 70.
DF is one of 5, 2 died before they were 70.

Both DM and DF grew up in the country, ate home grown veg. Healthy lifestyle etc.

There is no hope for me!

Peacock22 · 07/10/2026 19:16

The figure relates to people who are 18 now and the likelihood of them reaching 70.

The number who were born in the mid 50’s and didn’t reach 70 is much higher.

hyggetyggedotorg · 07/10/2026 19:18

I work in the NHS and while I have met lots of people over 70, I’m very surprised that only 12% die before 70. It seems like a far more frequent occurrence.

Thank you for that. So it is higher.

Doesn’t surprise me at all, so many lose their lives in car/motorcycle accidents, suicide, murders, heart disease & cancers. Aging is a privilege denied to many sadly.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 07/10/2026 19:36

Neither of my parents made it to 70. Lung disease and a car accident.

AllaMova · 07/10/2026 20:19

I’m another who’s surprised the figure isn’t higher.

Three of my school friends died before turning 30.

Sunnyphoenix · 07/10/2026 20:21

I think we've established that the figure is higher, at least based on ONS statistics of current deaths.

TubeScreamer · 07/10/2026 21:59

I’m guessing 18-70 deaths must be disproportionately concentrate in certain areas. I have managed 2 cemeteries for the last few years and haven’t had single burial or internet of someone under 70 (out of approximately 30).

Constantrunner · 07/10/2026 22:00

Is that church cemeteries? Because that might skew figures

Sounds about right. I remember my mum saying years ago that it's quite common to die in your 50's and 60's of various things but if you make it past that you are likely to survive into your 90's.

Two of my good friends recent died suddenly in their 50s and 60s. Another a couple of years ago at 57. None of these people had been previously ill

88%

WhatNextImScared · 07/10/2026 22:09

I think that’s quite low. Lots of people start dying from their 50s onwards and suicide rates are disturbingly high in mid life.

WhatNextImScared · 07/10/2026 22:10

Yes, as others have said 50s can be tough. My mum used to say it was sniper’s alley for women

I'm 71, and have outlived most of my friends. I only have 2 friends who are older than me.

Yes suicide rates are disturbingly high, but this is rarely talked about
