I know I'm not, there's just no

OH MY GOD ARE YOU MAD??????

in the topic list.

The adult in chrage had full leathers yet the child did not. School jumper and school shorts that's all.

(I rode a bike for a while and wore leathers with a protective jacket.)

Is it not illegal? I couldn't in all honesty tell you how old the child was just that they were wearing the local primary school uniform and their feet didn't touch the foot rests which, in my opinion is REALLY dangerous.

That is shocking.

I hate the way that so many adults make sure they are safe/comfortable but forget about/don't give a toss about the kids.

You also see it with seatbelts in cars and, my favourite bug-bear, adults wrapped up warmly in cold weather and kids freezing in skimpy clothes stuck in a push chair.

I agree..totally stupid thing to do! I work in A+E and see lots of young lads who have come off their mopeds with very little clothing on ie tshirt and track suit bottoms and have terrible wounds. Mindless irresponsible stupid thing to do!

Who in their right mind?

muppetgirl · 01/07/2008 09:06

Yes the child had a helmet on. I am just amazed that a parent would think this okay even if it were 'just this once' Surely there are some things you just shouldn't do?

I would also report to the school if you can identify the uniform. Appalling.

I wince when I see adults on bikes in skirts or with thin trousers, but they're just being thick rather than negligent

harleyd · 01/07/2008 09:08

thats just crazy

themildmannneredjanitor · 01/07/2008 09:08

i always used to go on the back of my dad s bike whn i was a kid. i didn't have leathers. it was our only means of transport. perhaps this family are the same?

muppetgirl · 01/07/2008 09:08

ll- when I learned to ride my boyfriend at the time told me some horrible sttistic about seconds skidding on tarmac after a crash relating to how much skin you lose. This child would have stood no chance at all even on this road that was a 40mph. That's why the ribbed bits on leathers that bikers wear are ribbed so they add further protection.

OP posts:
MarmadukeScarlet · 01/07/2008 09:09

Agree with Effie, if and adult wants to flay themselves as they skid along the tarmac that is their look out.

WheresTheAuPair · 01/07/2008 09:09

I would be shocked as well. My friends husband pretty much took all the skin off his left leg in a recent motorbike accident (he was wearing jeans) and it took forever to heal up and needed loads of grafts. He's still limping 4 months on.
When I worked in a school in Thailand I frequently saw 3 or so kids +baby clinging onto the back of a moped driven by mum -all in school uniform!) Scary stuff.

muppetgirl · 01/07/2008 09:11

tmmj - I disagree with the decision your parents made (but I do it with politeness and an understanding that people are all different and have different opinions )
We had one car which was my dad's so we walked everywhere.

themildmannneredjanitor · 01/07/2008 09:12

we didn't have a car at all you see.

i'm not saying it's the best thing to do but you have to walk a mile in someone elses shoes before judging why they have made the decision they have made.

well i can only speak for my family and we couldn't afford leathers for anyone! nor a pot to piss in!

muppetgirl · 01/07/2008 09:16

not going to argue over the differences between our family's transport issues as it is very difficult to judge until you've done the mile in anothers' shoes. I do still stand by -if you can provide protection for yourself, you can provide it for your child even more so if you have no alternative transport available.

OP posts:
themildmannneredjanitor · 01/07/2008 09:18

it if it was a local school and that was obviously the journey they were doing they, then they should have walked. i do agree with that.

harleyd · 01/07/2008 09:18

when i was younger i went on the back of bikes without leathers on, i can see how stupid it was now but i was in my teens, it was my choice to get on it. but i cant believe any parent would think this was ok

i can see that it's not safe yes. please don't misunderstand me. of course it's not safe! and i wouldn't allow my kids to do it.

However , if it is the only means of transport you have and your choice is to either stick the kid on the bike so you can take them somewhere nice or never going anywhere then i can see why would you makemthat choice.

i am just seeing both sides of the story.

muppetgirl · 01/07/2008 09:22

ll - i can agree with the looking back and realising my parents may not have made the safest decision for my brothers and I. We were all loaded into the boot of the car (without the parcelshelf!!!) -with cousins whilst the adults had the seats. There were upwards of 4/5/6 kids in the back of my parents car. Absolutely no way would I even contemplate this now.

Same with drink driving look how all that's changed.
