To wonder why child benefit doesn't get the same "triple lock" (or even double lock) protection that Pensions get?

I just asked AI to calculate how much child benefit we would get if it had also had the protection of a triple lock and it would be around £230 every 4 weeks for 2 children . Currently I get £179

Surely instead of all the tinkering type policies Labour could come up with some initiatives like this?

I have worked in public sector is is a holiday camp compeared to a real job in a firm that has to make profit to exist

Interesting to know that teaching, nursing, policing aren't real jobs. IME (teaching) the public sector version is way harder than when I working in a private school. Given that teaching is apparently a cushy job, can you explain why it is so hard to find people who will actually do it?

I also can't understand why they don't apply it to public sector salaries. We have had below inflation increases every year for over 15 years now. Despite climbing the career ladder it feels like our quality of living deteriorates. We work really hard and we know we make a difference but for the responsibility we have there should be some disposable income left

‘Below inflation pay increases’! This always makes me laugh! This happens in the private sector all the time. A former company went through the doldrums and we had 0% pay rise for years. We were glad to have a job as so many colleagues were being made redundant. Be grateful for getting anything.

Perfectly fair decision which requires no one to be put to death. 😱

People who have already left an organisation get back dated pay? Where’s the value for money in that? Doesn’t in any way contribute to the ongoing or future operations of the enterprise as…. They’ve already left!

Pensioners didn't choose to get old.
The same goes for disabled people. They didn't choose to become disabled.
And children didn't ask to be born.

You can rationalise it all you want, but as a few posters have pointed out, the govt looking after pensioners is sadly down to nothing more than that they turn out to cast their votes.
The govt would have pensioners live in abject poverty if they did nothing other than complain on the Internet!
I don't believe the govt cares about any particular demographic, it is all just a mask because appearing to care makes them more likely to be voted in.
It's all about their careers.

I always find it strange when people complain about the amount of money they get for child benefit. I always saw it as an extra to help with the cost of children. We had children because we wanted to. We would have liked more children but we couldn’t afford more so we stopped at 2.

DustyMaiden · 06/10/2026 14:44

State pension is paid into. It’s a return on an investment. Not even sure why child benefit exists.

Universal credit has gone up higher % than pensions btw.

This.

This.

Universal credit is also not taxable, unlike pension income. I think people forget that pensioners pay tax (ok not NI) above the regular personal allowance. Not all “benefits” are treated the same.

Children don't vote.

They're parents do though, and they're the ones who receive the benefit, not the children.

As well as all tax allowances thresholds :)

This one has gone on for so long it's a joke! And regressive because it's moving the tax burden lower down the salary scale. I was fine with it for a year or two during Covid, but it's now just a dishonest tax rise.

Ha! Me too. I don’t think I’ve ever had a pay rise that matched inflation. And I’ve had plenty of years of pay freezes. Private sector, obviously.

Then you obviously weren't emptying bins or working at the tip, street cleaning, working in a care home, working with mentally or physically disabled people , teaching disruptive pupils etc. Honestly some people think everyone who works for the LA are penpushers.

Its a poor state of affairs when we're reduced to telling young working couples they shouldn't be having children, and telling our retired citizens that £12k a year is generous enough to live on after a life time of work.

itsadlibitum · 06/10/2026 15:54

If we don’t support families to have kids then I 25 years time there will be no one to work in order to pay for that triple lock pension.

Not to the extent that pensioners do though. The older you get, the greater the percent of voters. More than twice as many people over 65 vote compared to 20 year olds. So a government is much better targeting their efforts at older people than those with young children.

But they worked there for lower pay. So they are entitled to receive the pay rise for the time they worked there.

I agree. When my elder child was born we didn’t get any. Family allowance, which became Child Benefit, wasn’t paid for the first child, we got it when we had our second. I think she was about seven when we got it for both. We also stopped at two.

Now I’m an older pensioner, thank goodness I paid into an occupational pension for 20+ years in my later working life. My state pittance is about £5k a year, so the triple lock makes little difference personally. Because my income is relatively low I did find bits of p/t work after SP age. I’d lack the stamina to do it now.

@ElanaohElana

Agreed, aside from providing good education (inc nurseries) for all free of charge (ie those big ticket items best done at scale and in the interest of society), what more support do parents need from the government?

If parents can’t afford to have children without government support (= other people’s money), then they shouldn’t have them.

I don’t actually receive CB due to earnings. But I believe wholeheartedly that all children should be well cared for and have enough. They will one day be my nurses and doctors and shop workers and care workers. It benefits us all to ensure our children grow up well. This idea that we aren’t interconnected is ridiculous to me.

I share the same belief, I just believe parents should only become parents if they can provide that support for their children rather than expect others to pickup the tab.
