Sometimes we don’t, do we? Sometimes they end up in a secure hospital. The point is there that public safety is paramount.

Prison has three purposes: retribution, reform and public safety. In this case, as horrible as it is for the dogs, I don’t think any of those boxes are really ticked.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think people who hurt animals are the scum of the earth. They know they can get away with it, no matter how heinous their treatment of the animal. I just don't think banning them from owning animals is justice.

ohmaaaan · 05/10/2026 16:59

There are doubtless people like that. I don’t think that this was such a case, though.

4 of these poor dogs are going to join the police as Sniffer dogs! Exciting times coming up for them!

Sadly, crimes against animals doesn't seem to carry a prison sentence. Usually a fine and a ban from keeping animals. It is shameful.

You are right, utterly shameful.

It suggests to me something very strange was going on. I’m not sure prison is a particularly sensible option but of course he shouldn’t be allowed to have animals again.

Yes very strange, the fact that there were 2 other adults in that house and not one of those cruel and disgusting people gave those dogs a fresh drink of water or made sure they all ate food. Instead they were locked in appalling conditions cover in shit and piss for months on end with little human interaction. I will never be anble to erase the image of the one at the bottom of the stairs.

Prison is a very sensible option and for a very long time is even more sensible. All 3 of them.

It's absolutely heartbreaking isn't it? And to think the only "punishment " will probably be a ban on keeping animals. Disgraceful. Maybe if there was actually proper, meaningful punishment, these cruel monsters would think twice before hurting an innocent, defenseless animal.

The sentencing hasn't happened yet. You're making up scenarios and getting angry at your own imagination here.

The humans, two of whom have disabilities / special needs, were living in the same conditions.

Forget vengeance for a moment and making yourself feel better, and think about what a prison sentence would actually achieve.

The wee dog on the bottom of the stairs has been popping up on my TikTok lately (I think I interacted with a video about this news story so it’s been pushing a lot of content to me) and oh my goodness, that dog is living its absolute best life now. I can’t remember if it was male or female but it is so loved and having a whale of a time with its new family!

There was a similar case where I live. A man neglected a load of greyhounds, and also his own mum that had dementia. Literally just left them to fend for themselves. Blamed depression. It might have been a reason, but not an excuse.

longtompot · 05/10/2026 20:48

It was awful see in the video with the disgusting living conditions. How on earth did these people live like that, let alone let their dogs live like that? The one on the bottom step just broke my heart but I am glad she has a home and is living her best life.
My puppy has actually played with one of the dogs rescued on her morning walk and she is a lovely dog.

Yes, I do get angry when I see animals being mistreated. I just hope that the punishment fits the crime.

dottiedodah · 05/10/2026 21:00

Stardolphin yes it's very upsetting. I take comfort that they all have super new lives now. One of the new owners was sure she could see her dog there! Sorry if It upset you .onward and upward for these guys and thanks be to the police RSPCA .and all involved in this huge rescue operation

Because I don’t think it was borne from deliberate cruelty: it’s too peculiar for that. It makes no difference to the dogs that this wasn’t the intent of course but prison as an act of vengeance isn’t something I’m really on board with.

This

Do the other prisoners sort out perpetrators of animal cruelty like they do child abusers do you think? I bloody hope so.

Surely a clear case of retribution.

ohmaaaan · 06/10/2026 09:55

A case of ‘let’s hope the other prisoners beat the shit out of someone vulnerable’?

Vulnerable people do terrible things to other vulnerable beings through ignorance, lack of knowledge, or just so entrenched in their own difficulties they just can’t see it.

No, because they don't tend to end up in prison. Just a fine and ban.
