My ex left me when I got pregnant, now he's back and wants to marry me. I still love him, but I'm not sure if I should trust him again.

Around a month ago, I posted about my pregnancy and how my ex bf left me after finding out about it.

So, a update. He actually came back, but not because I called him or chased him. I didn't contact him at all. I was already okay with raising my kid alone, and I'm financially comfortable, so I wasn't depending on him for anything.

His mom actually reached out to me first, asked about my health and everything, and made it clear that she was going to be there for me and the baby no matter what. I was honestly grateful because at least someone from his side cared. We met at a cafe, and she was really supportive. A few days later, his sister also reached out.

I was pretty close to his family before all this, so seeing them care about me and their grandchild meant a lot. Not once did I ask them for financial support or ask them to bring their son back (the sarcasm lol).

But honestly, it also made me wonder what kind of asshole I fell in love with. This is his child too, his first child, literally growing inside me, and he couldn't even check on me once while his own family was doing it.

Thankfully, I have a really good support system. My mom, dad, brother and sisters have been there for me throughout everything. My mom or one of my sisters usually comes with me to my checkups, and thankfully, both the baby and I are doing well.

Anyway, last week, my ex texted me asking if he could come over to our apartment. The funny thing is, I've been paying the bills for the past two months myself, lol. I said okay, and he showed up with some food and medical supplies I needed.

I was still really angry with him, but I didn't want to create a scene, so I let him talk.

He apologized for the last two months, admitted he was wrong about the wedding, and said he panicked when he found out about the baby and genuinely didn't know what to do. He said he did care about me and the baby, even though his actions definitely didn't show that.

He also knew about the conversations I'd had with his mom and sister, so apparently they'd been talking to him about everything.

He told me he wants to be involved in my life and the baby's life. I told him that if he genuinely wants to be a father, I'm not going to stop him because this is his child too.

But I also made it clear that I can't just jump back into a relationship where I don't feel safe or secure. I still love him, but after the way he handled everything, I don't know if I can trust him again.

I told him that if he wants to be with me, I want us to get married before the baby is born. Not because I need his money or because I can't raise this child alone, but because I don't want to be in a relationship where I have to constantly wonder if he'll disappear again when things get difficult. Otherwise, we're perfectly capable of co-parenting.

Honestly, I expected him to argue or ask for more time, but he didn't even think much about it. He just said okay, he'd marry me.

I told him I needed time to think about everything.

And now I'm confused as hell.

I still love this man. That's the problem. Part of me is happy that he's back and wants to take responsibility, but another part of me keeps remembering how he left me alone for two months during one of the most vulnerable periods of my life.

My family is supportive regardless of what I decide, and I don't need him financially. I can raise my baby on my own if I have to. But I also don't want to make a decision based purely on anger when I still have feelings for him.

So, I genuinely want an outside perspective. Am I making a mistake by even considering marrying him? Should I give him a chance to prove himself first, or is it better to keep things strictly about co parenting?

Are his family old fashioned and traditional because it sounds like his mum and sister told him "to do the right thing" and standby the mother of his child.

I think you would be crazy to want to marry him now.

He's shown you he runs.

See what he's life as a dad and he does his fair share.

Yes, sounds to me like the family have pounced on the prospect of a grandchild, and will do whatever it takes to ensure OP moves forward as much under their control as possible.
The father of the baby sounds like his spine was removed at birth, so if OP does marry him, it should be in full awareness of that and in honest (to herself) admission that financial considerations mean a great deal to her.

Tel12 · 04/10/2026 19:08

Sounds like his family have convinced him to make a claim on the baby. I'd tread very cautiously, although marriage might give you more financial stability this doesn't have happy ever after stamped all over it.

chexxx · 04/10/2026 19:09

Happened to me. He didn’t change. Enough said.

Starlight7080 · 04/10/2026 19:13

No that wont work. A marriage based on such shaky foundations is foolish. You need to go back to the start. Date and spend time together. See how things go over a long period of time.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/10/2026 19:15

When someone shows you who they are, believe them!

Don't get married. It's no guarantee he won't disappear again, and it will just make everything more complicated when he does.

Start with co-parenting. That's the important bit. You can take your time finding out if he genuinely loves you. Even if he does, you have a very good reason to believe he can't be trusted, and that doesn't make him a good pick for a partner.

PJ98 · 04/10/2026 19:17

You were together 6 years and he did a runner upon finding out you were pregnant?

Do not marry this man. This man could never have enough redeeming qualities to make him a green or even a yellow flag. You would have to have no remaining senses in order to consider this surely.

ScaramoucheCanYouDoTheFandango · 04/10/2026 19:18

Do you really want to marry some who says “okay, I’ll marry you”, under duress.

I’d forget about marriage for now, take it slow and get him to prove he is worth your time. He doesn’t sound like a man who is desperate to win you back.

gamerchick · 04/10/2026 19:37

From what you've said, it looks like you've had a coordinated net put around you OP. You cant marry this bloke yet. It's insane.

FarmGirl78 · 04/10/2026 19:58

I don't see why marrying him will give you reassurance he won't walk out and disappear off again.

Surely he's more likely to do what he wants, because you're tied to him?

If he loves you and want to make a go of it, then SHOWING you that is the way forward. Him proving his dedication to you as a couple, over time, by his actions, is what will reassure you he won't leave you and wants to be with you, not a piece of paper or 30 seconds of vows while you're in church in a posh frock.

You'd be fucking nuts to marry him.

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 04/10/2026 20:11

Keep away from him. He’s vile. Untrustworthy. He will damage you again. And worse, your child.

MCF86 · 04/10/2026 20:16

he'd left you before he knew about the baby because he wasn't ready to commit. At the moment I think he probably wants to want it, because you're having his child. You would both be foolish to actually do it at the moment though. A baby makes relationships harder, not easier.
Take your time. If he proves himself to be a good father, is hands on and supportive to you as well as baby and over time (a lot of time) really does seem to be ready to be a family then maybe, but there's no rush.

Jimmyjumpy · 04/10/2026 20:17

Keep him at arms length to see how it pans out. Are you in the UK. Its Mum not Mom if you are btw.

Oxo01 · 04/10/2026 20:30

I think its strange that after his family speaking to you all of a sudden hes up for a baby and marriage and all that goes with it.
That not easy at the best of times let alone with someone that appears not to have wanted a child.
I would not trust him or his family at all at this point in time.
He did not say he wants to marry you, you put that on him, he agreed as I'm sure his family have told him to step up at least for now.

If his name goes on the birth certificate ( marred or not) he will have equal rights to the child so you need to be prepared that you
will need permission from him for things like any medicle issues, school travelling abroad etc and if you split shared custody thats without his family influence and input.
Think hard but do not marry him at least for a long time.

Lampsandlightsandotherthings · 04/10/2026 21:08

You need to think about this differently.
He’s just had a job interview.
He needs to pass probation.
He needs to do really bloody well.
Before he worms his way into your financial security, you’ve said you are secure…. Ffs don’t just waive that away without trust,

It’s mom if she wants it to be mom. It know someone who uses mom, she has never been out of England

MagicUser1 · 04/10/2026 23:44

You shouldn't marry someone in an attempt to fix the relationship. if he is genuinely back and if you are genuinely still in love with him, marriage might be the right option.... but not until you've worked through things. why did he levae? why did he come back? these re important questions you need to answer for yourself and he needs to answer for himself.

SirenScream · 04/10/2026 23:48

You're unsure about trusting this man, and yet you want to chain yourself to him by marriage. Wouldn't you be offering him your throat?
