At one point I had the luxury of p/t in a job share (teaching). IMy colleague requested Monday to lunchtime on Weds, and I was happy to do Weds pm to Friday. People thought I’d got the worst deal but I really hadn’t. I was able to enjoy my Sunday, never got that Monday morning feeling but always got the Friday Feeling, which was very pleasant.

You might think one day is very much like another, but it’s not!

It was so extreme when I was teaching, to the point of actually being sick on occasion. I left teaching and it stopped completely. Nobody should have to put up with that level of stress.

I agree. I’m sure teaching wasn’t like this 40 years ago. Something has to change - it’s actually making people mentally and physically ill.

I used to cry most Sunday nights and dreaded going to bed cos I knew it was step closer to going to work on Monday morning. Now I don't work i don't have that problem. Half the time I don't know what day it is. Spent most of today thinking it was Monday.

Not me but dd has recently started secondary and the Sunday scaries are awful. What is going on in schools that its making everyone from teachers to students ill with stress?

I taught primary for 20 years and I felt like that for the last ten. I left two years ago and although I do still occasionally get anxious about work, it’s nothing like it was.
I’m sitting here thinking about what I have to get through tomorrow but I’m not sick with worry about which part of my work will be used to beat me with.
Sending strength to those feeling it.

I started as a secondary teacher and then, after my children, retrained for primary. So between my original PGCE and my primary conversion lots of changes and shifts in attitude had taken place.

One thing I’d single out which I think has gone WAY too far is the tendency for teachers to blame themselves for absolutely everything that isn’t perfect in their classrooms/ teaching/school. Self-reflection and asking how we could have done things better is one thing, but the self-flagellation and blame which teachers have been encouraged to accept has gone too far. They are often working in impossible situations yet still they are bullied by management into feeling they are inadequate or not doing enough. It’s unsustainable.

Rant over.
