People are STILL using their phones whilst driving and at traffic lights!

I’m sick and tired of nearly having car crashes on my busy commute because some idiot is on their phone.

I had a near miss on Friday when the lights changed and the car in front tried to pull away whilst still on their phone and nearly crashed into me. Then yesterday, I was on a two lane road with traffic lights every 250 yards or so, and every time I stopped at a red the car next to me were looking at their phone.

If I did it ( obviously I wouldn’t) you can bet I’d get caught!

Speed cameras are standard, so why not catching people on their phones? Obviously the law doesn’t apply to them

The right setup can use "Hey Google" and do it by voice. (since at least 2020).

🤣🤣🤣
Not available for his car 🤦🏻‍♀️ ffs

I never look at my phone when driving even stopped at traffic lights it's an accident waiting to happen

LindorDoubleChoc · 12/10/2026 20:56

I see it everywhere, every time I drive. Incredible isn't it?

How would you know they received 6 points and a fine? Do they tell you?

I wondered this. I’ve made reports on operation snap and never heard of an outcome.

Dbank · 12/10/2026 21:44

People continue to hold and use mobile phones as they think it's very unlikely they will be caught.

I make the point of calling it out when I see it happening, and urge more people to do the same.

It's as bad as drink driving in my opinion

And is treated as such by the police- it's one of the fatal four: speeding, driving while under the influence or drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, and mobile device use.

Sat navs (or phones being used for that purpose) don't need to be touched during a drive- if you take the wrong road they reroute.

There is literally no excuse for having your phone in your hand when driving (and no excuse the police haven't heard a million times, or will accept. Doesn't stop dimwits from trying though.)

I don't think that is a defence in law.

I agree. I don't drive but I travel on buses regularly and from my elevated position on the bus,I see numerous car drivers on their phones. Not just at traffic lights or while they're sitting in a queue of traffic,it's while they're actually moving. A couple of months ago,I narrowly avoided being hit by a driver who ran through a red light at a pedestrian crossing. And guess what? He was on his phone.

I wish police were as hot on this as speeding. Actually, I wish there were more out there generally, looking for speeders (so many near me) and dangerous driving. They could issue fines and this would pay for the extra resourcing needed.

It makes me so angry at the lack of effort put into making roads safe from idiots.

On the subject of speeding, the main road near where I live has 20 mph speed limit. Yet every single day I witness drivers racing along far in excess of 20 mph. I'm not talking about doing 25 mph, this is more like 50 or 60. There are no speed cameras, never any traffic police on duty. But no one ever seems to get caught!

dustabsorber · 13/10/2026 17:30

The penalties are not severe enough. The penalty should reflect not just the risk of causing harm, but also the risk of being caught.

I would be inclined to treat dangerous drivers, drink drivers, drug drivers and on phone drivers the same is if they had caused an accident, even if they haven't. So bans and even hail time.

They should all lose their licences, and by lose it, I mean to start again from scratch. Have lessons, book and pass a test.
I would treat driving whilst banned as contempt of court and jail offenders.

This short film by Gwent Police/Tredegar School should be mandatory viewing for everyone passing their driving test today.

I lost interest in people bleating about speeding when on a SAC (33 in a 30), we were shown a traffic census showing 3 cars going past a school at over 80 mph between 2 and 3pm.

There was a gasp when the instructors told us that this was the road we had all see a video of a car driving, and had all said that (a) it was 30mph at max and (b) there was a school on that road.

Being caught drunk/drug driving already has a punishment..... even if nothing happened.
I used to work with someone who got a 1 year ban for drink driving. He got caught because he drove to the police station to report a crime and he stunk of booze. They didn't even catch him driving.

Jail time depends on if someone was hit and injured/killed.
They can't jail someone for the same time as killing someone if they did not actually kill someone.

Ladybarnaby · 18/10/2026 18:11

I can guarantee that lots of people here will have used their phone while driving, the law of averages say thus. I got caught once, never done it since. My phone sits in my bag, whilst driving, behind the drivers seat. I do have a hands free set up so no problem.

The comment seemed to imply that if you haven't got a feature that precludes using your hands to access your phone, it is a valid excuse. Or so the snark reply seemed to suggest.

LucieO · 18/10/2026 18:49

I drive through West London on my way to and from work so it is quite heavy traffic and stop/start so you can clearly see what other drivers are up to - the number of people watching YouTube whilst driving is completely insane. It terrifies me.

Something else that drives me mad is ‘influencers’ posting videos of themselves chatting to the camera whilst driving. How do people think that this is acceptable?!
