AIBU to trust my gut about my husband's messaging and defensiveness?

A few months ago my husband was messaging a woman he used to go to college with. The messages were reminiscent, not overtly flirtatious or anything. But crossed the line for me… she told him she’d just ended her 12 year relationship and wanted to “catch up”. She lives outside of Europe and said they’d catch up when she got back. He mentioned our child and his career in the last decade or so but not me. His excuse for this is that she could see he was married as our wedding picture and recent pictures are on his social media.

She started sending him voice notes and he stopped replying. His explanation to me was that he “felt like it was weird” and “only you send me voice notes”.

It wasn’t the fact he was talking to an old friend, it’s the fact he lied. At first he said it was a random girl in the year below him, then that she was his sisters age (12 years younger than him), and then that they were good friends when I found the messages?

It sounds ridiculous writing it down, but for weeks before this, my gut was telling me he was talking to her. He was looking at me with contempt, less affectionate and generally quite mean. As soon as I saw he’d friended her (she came up on my suggestions), my gut was screaming at me. I’m not usually a jealous person but I knew something was going on.

He was very apologetic, reassured me he was just catching up with an old friend. It took months to get over it, it left me feeling awful.

Over the last few weeks he’d been talking about a woman who works in the same area of work as him. She’s opening her own company and was offering him a job. They are currently in the same office space, and have discussed it there. He said that she had suggested that they go for a coffee at the weekend to talk things through. I thought this was odd, given that they can talk in work. I didn’t say anything, but eventually they sorted it on text.

Tonight she popped up on my friend suggestions on facebook. My gut has been screaming at me for weeks - husband less interested in me, distant, critical. So I asked if that was the new manager from work. He got really defensive and said I must be looking her up and that I had a bad attitude. I found his reaction over the top. I’ve done this before with people from his gym/work (and he’s done the same to me), it’s like putting a name to a face?

He’s stormed out and said I’ve ruined another evening. Have I? Aibu to trust my gut ?

@Fuckingdrivel You are just looking for something to make an issue of. Is your life that boring? There are easier, and less damaging, ways to make it more interesting.

If you want to get rid of your husband, you're doing all the right things to achieve that. If you were writing about your husband monitoring your phone use and who you had on your Facebook Friends list, people would be telling you he was controlling and to get rid of him. How is what you're doing any different? Take a step back and look at yourself.

Controlling for you to not be okay with lies in a relationship, or jealous that in weeks of talking to an old friend you speak about everything and anything, but fail to mention your wife?

I’ve never told him what to do, but I have told him how his behaviour affects me.

Ditto with this woman - the mentionitis, how she’s appeared from our the blue, his reaction to me asking if it was her.

Are you sure it’s out of character for him? You know of two already. Maybe the old friend wasn’t the first and the colleague not the last.

Well it’s out of character because he’s always maintained men and women can’t be friends as there’s always attraction on either one end, and because of “biology”

this doesn't sound like a good relationship. your husband isnt doing anything odd but you most definitely are

Wrestling67 · 03/10/2026 10:23

She doesn’t just pop up on your suggested Facebook friends unless there’s a tie somewhere, like a mutual (is she friends on Facebook with your husband?)
if there’s absolutely nothing , then she’s looked you up, or you’ve looked her up, and fb identifies a possible link

Yep.

So even though my husband admitted he took things too far with the messages, it’s me being controlling? When he said he felt uncomfortable about it ?

how?

YANBU, its the lying, and the change in behaviour towards you that make it sus. I think your instincts are spot on.

Because you are trying to tell him what he can and can't do. That's what controlling means. And my gut instinct is that he's a weak person who will say what he thinks you want to hear because it's easier than listening to you going on and on about whatever it is. He was initially just talking to an old friend. You made it into something else in your head.

How did you come across the messages to and from the first woman, as in "when I found the messages"?

What does he say when you quote this back to him? In the context of these women? Like how can he think that and still have female friends?
Does he 'allow' you friends of the opposite sex? It definitely sounds like you don't trust him.

To me looking up people on SM just because my partner works with them seems a bit odd. If that's something either of you do it does feel a bit like there's little trust in general between you.

But I wouldn't be with a man who thought that 'biology' means opposite sex friendships are impossible. While conducting them?

OriginalSkang · 03/10/2026 11:14

You don't need evidence. You know this isn't right

Subsets2026 · 03/10/2026 11:41

He is clearly a liar, dishonest and on the prowl.

His true feelings of you are his treatment of contempt for you.

He feels confident when distracted by a potential fling to allow his true feelings leak out as he feels powerful.

He is absolute scum and if you have an ounce of sense you will get organised and your ducks in a row.

Don't believe a word from this liars mouth.

Firefly100 · 03/10/2026 11:55

You suspect but you don’t know. I’d focus on him being distant, critical, defensive and saying I had a bad attitude. No matter what is or is not going on, that needs fixing. No one should have to live with that.

cartagenagina · 03/10/2026 12:01

His response makes him look suspicious.

Magicpaintbrush · 03/10/2026 12:03

If she popped up on as a friend suggestion on your fb that might mean she has been looking you up already. Why I wonder? Because she is checking out the competition?

That’s what I thought
