AIBU to think taking a pet cat on the bus is unusual

Is it strange to see a cat on the bus with it's owner?
A man boarded the bus yesterday with a cat. It was like his accessory fancy collar etc, and he was saying he was going to start taking the cat on the bus now.
Clearly enjoying it?

Has anyone else even seen someone board with a cat in arms?

I’ve seen this in London a few times and think it must be so stressful for the cat. They’re territorial animals, for goodness sake. Taking them out of the territory onto the bus\tube must be terrifying.
People seem to treats cats like dogs or a living soft toy. It’s really cruel.

Exactly this. Dogs and cats are completely different animals, just because you can take a dog out on a lead doesn't mean you can take a cat! This is why I never leave my cats at a cattery when we go away because yhey are territorial and much less stressful for them.

My cat would try and kill me if I did this!

I was just going to type same lol! One of mine did jump into the Asda van for a nose when I was getting a home delivery. Luckily I spotted her and got her out without her diving into the crates of food. Needed waving Dreamies at her before she even acknowledged me.😄

Seen it on the tube a few times and my local pub has a guy who comes in with his parrot. It sits on the bar and gets nuts from the staff. My dog does not like him 😙

ChannelLightVessel · 02/10/2026 14:12

I have never recovered from seeing someone with some kind of snake round his shoulders on the London Overground 😾🐍

CurlewKate · 02/10/2026 14:16

I brought 2 kittens in the sleeper train from Inverness to London and then on to Kent. It worked-but was rather stressful!

WhatDoRacoonsSay · 02/10/2026 14:31

Dd took her snake on a train once.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/10/2026 14:32

I once saw a cat on a lead on the tube. I did wonder what would happen if a dog came along.

Favouritefruits · 02/10/2026 14:35

My cat wouldn’t be seen dead on a bus, she’s far too superior to slum it with the peasants.

Laura95167 · 02/10/2026 14:37

Some people need buses to get pets to vets

Meand2Ls · 02/10/2026 15:07

A friend of mine takes her cat everywhere. We went out with my kids the other day and the cat came to the park, farm, and cafe with us. She doesn’t drive so she takes him on trains, buses, taxis etc with him

The only place I'd be going if I tried to take my cat on a bus would be A&E.... 😼

Yetanotherone12 · 02/10/2026 15:13

A pet cat?

probably preferable to taking a wild cat on the bus…

Why would a cat need to go to A&E?

Generally speaking cats like to be at home. I can't imagine the cat wants to be on a bus, out & about, or surrounded by noise and people.

Cats aren't an accessory.

Agree. He was a plonker for taking a cat on the bus.

My friends parents drove a Mercedes used to take the cat for a run in the car. He had a sheepskin rug on the boot shelf. More than one person tapped the window to ask them did they know there was a cat in the car.

Mrs Ridleydash sadly long dead took her cat everywhere around her shoulders like a stole. As a young child it both fascinated and scared the life out of me, Thankfully animal stoles are no longer in vogue when I used to see someone wearing one I was convinced it would come alive just like Mrs Ridleydash's cat.

Weird people saying vet, our vet won’t see any cat that isnt in a carrier

elastamum · 02/10/2026 16:14

Last year when we were skiing we met a couple who were walking their two cats in the mountains. Cats had goggles and jackets and carrier backpacks and seemed quite happy. They were a mountain breed and looked a bit like tiny tigers! Apparently they have been walking with them for years.

I saw someone with their cat on a lead at a national trust house. Pretty sure they were just walking it around the gardens and not actually going in the house. There is no way my cat would put up with that. He loves roaming outside but I think its ridiculous to take cats out on a lead like a dog.

Some years ago, my elder DD and I saw a couple with their pet rabbit on a lead at our local National Trust property. It’s prime dog walking territory. We were absolutely gobsmacked and still talk about how bonkers it was even now.

That could well of been me , I took mine on the bus frequently.

I take my cat on the bus in his carrier but if its quiet I get him out for a bit so he can look out of the window

Doggymummar · 02/10/2026 16:23

Not in Brighton

Why on earth not ?
I get that they may want to ensure the cat has / will travel safely but they can not dictate exactly how that happens.
