To think he's a cheeky fucker and I can sit in my car in a paid-for space if I want?

I was 45 minutes early to meet a friend in a hoppers car park, paid by app (it's also pay and display) and decided to while away the time with my book before heading out to meet her

It's a busy car park and getting there at 9.45 was both strategic and logistical as I had finished a dental appointment nearby and knew the ease of parking is more unlikely later in the day.

I also managed to snag an end bay too which pleases me as I have a 2 seater and I'm a sturdy gal, so I knew no one could park next to me and prevent me squeezing back in my car.

I was winning Wednesday tbh.

As I was absorbed in reading a car totted me and asked if I was going, I replied I wasn't, and was heading out into the city a bit later.

"Well can you move, then, there's no other spots, you can come back later"

"No, I've paid, I'm staying"

"well you haven't paid, there's no ticket"

"I used PayByPhone"

I just gave him an eyeroll and wound the window back up and ignored.

He hovered for a bit and tooted a couple more times, gesticulated but I didn't rise to his red faced anger.

AIBU to think car parks are not solely for Empty Cars? There are many reasons that someone may be sitting in a car, not getting out.

YABU you shouldn't be taking an Entitled's space.

YANBU you were legitimately using a car park.

Tbh, I can see why he was annoyed but it takes a man to voice it.

You were entitled to the space and he shouldn’t have been tooting and huffing and puffing at you.

I would have loved to have seen his face if you look cowed, put your book away... Then left the car and walk away.

So many threads like this, you know you were not being unreasonable. Confused

I was about to say have you posted this before as I’ve read something almost identical lately. Funnily enough the consensus on that one was the op was not doing anything important, car parks are not for sitting in your car and hanging round in and that she should have moved

The worst one I had was when I returned to my car to drop some bags but wasn't leaving ..I was going back up to the shops. Someone appeared as I was putting the bags in and pulled up to wait. I said straight away I wasn't leaving, so they hadn't been waiting for ages but I got 'oh come on, theres no spaces' I said, yeah its busy, thats why I came really early but I've got other things to do in town, sorry' I got 'fuck's sake' and wheel screech as he sped off. Twat.

She could just as easily have gone and read her book in a cafe and the space would be just as full but she'd be £5 down on an unnecessary coffee.

I’m not disagreeing with her. Just pointing out the other thread went completely the other way to the point it was getting a bit hostile. Mn is a weird place to be some days 🤷🏼‍♀️

Do you have a link? 👀

I work at a hospital. A few weeks ago, I was parked in a clearly signposted staff-only car park, eating lunch in my car, and was “told off” by a patient for taking up a parking space. I did point out it was a staff-only car park, and if they want to avoid a parking ticket they should park in another car park, but they wanted my space because it was in the shade. Turns out they had a dog in the boot!

SHOPPERS.

I haven't hopped for 50 odd years.

Oooh I thought you'd found a new type of fitness class .😃

As pp have said its fine to ask if your about to leave but that's it.
The repeated asking and beeping would have me reclining my chair for a snooze.

TrippleCooked · 30/09/2026 16:08

@FucksakeLavender there’s no doubt you were annoying but that said you paid for the space so could what the hell you wanted to do with it.

Both can be true at the same time.

I was once walking through a carpark with my son to get to my destination and a lady pulled up alongside me to ask if we were leaving. When I explained we were local and just walking through she tutted and rolled her eyes at me!

I would have answered 'yes' and left her to deal with the confusion of finding my space! 😁

How dare you walk through a public location! 😁
