To think he's a cheeky fucker and I can sit in my car in a paid-for space if I want?

I was 45 minutes early to meet a friend in a hoppers car park, paid by app (it's also pay and display) and decided to while away the time with my book before heading out to meet her

It's a busy car park and getting there at 9.45 was both strategic and logistical as I had finished a dental appointment nearby and knew the ease of parking is more unlikely later in the day.

I also managed to snag an end bay too which pleases me as I have a 2 seater and I'm a sturdy gal, so I knew no one could park next to me and prevent me squeezing back in my car.

I was winning Wednesday tbh.

As I was absorbed in reading a car totted me and asked if I was going, I replied I wasn't, and was heading out into the city a bit later.

"Well can you move, then, there's no other spots, you can come back later"

"No, I've paid, I'm staying"

"well you haven't paid, there's no ticket"

"I used PayByPhone"

I just gave him an eyeroll and wound the window back up and ignored.

He hovered for a bit and tooted a couple more times, gesticulated but I didn't rise to his red faced anger.

AIBU to think car parks are not solely for Empty Cars? There are many reasons that someone may be sitting in a car, not getting out.

YABU you shouldn't be taking an Entitled's space.

YANBU you were legitimately using a car park.

I haven't hopped for 50 odd years.

What a knob. No, you were not being unreasonable. He was initially not unreasonable to ask if you were leaving but everything thereafter was wanky and unreasonable

JaneJaneAnne · 30/09/2026 11:44

Not unreasonable in any way.

MyGirlJ · 30/09/2026 11:44

YANBU. If you've paid for the parking space then your entitled to use it.

Blocksfruity · 30/09/2026 11:46

I had this in a hospital car park, I'd just had some bad news and needed to compose myself. A woman tapped on my window rather irritated as she had followed me across the car park with her car and expected me to reverse out and leave immediately. I had tears streaming down my face and wasn't safe to drive, I needed 10 minutes to calm down first. I told her I wasn't moving and she tutted and kept saying "why, you've just come back what do you need to stay here for, we are late for our appointment". The fact that I was sobbing my heart out meant literally nothing to her so I closed the window and gave her the finger.

YANBU, there are many reasons people need to sit in their cars for a bit.

AgnesX · 30/09/2026 11:47

It's irritating but if you've paid it's your space to use.

ProfMummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 30/09/2026 11:50

😂 At Hoppers

Yes, it's a little irksome when your drive around a packed carpark and see someone sat in their car but that's because you think "oh goody, they're going to move" but they don't and then you feel deflated.

However, I wouldn't dream of going up and asking someone to shift, never mind arguing the toss, beeping and gesticulating. My bet is he wouldn't have done that to a man though, twatty men like that never do.

purplecorkheart · 30/09/2026 11:52

He was a twat.

takealettermsjones · 30/09/2026 11:56

YANBU and I've also had this! Completely understand him asking, but he should have just nodded and gone away when the answer was no!

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 30/09/2026 11:59

Yanbu at all and yy he would never have been so rude to a male driver.

DaftFunk · 30/09/2026 11:59

Never underestimate the entitlement of some drivers. Thankfully a minority.

SleepingisanArt · 30/09/2026 12:01

My husband waited in the car in a paid space whilst I was at a hospital appointment. He was the driver as I wasn't allowed to drive thanks to hand surgery. He parked and then sat in the passenger seat. He said quite a few people looked irritated when they crawled by looking for a space but what could they do? He swapped seats when I got back and drove us home. Perhaps try that if you aren't leaving your space in a hurry....

FrozenCharlottes · 30/09/2026 12:04

YANBU. Yes, it’s frustrating when you’re looking for a space and you think someone’s about to move and they don’t, but the person in the space has every right to stay there for longer if they want or need to.

Sometimes when I want to sit in my car for a few moments in a busy car park, I go and sit in the passenger seat so that it looks like I’m waiting for the driver. Just so that entitled drivers like the one you encountered are more likely to leave me alone.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/09/2026 12:05

Sounds like yet another “man trying to intimidate a woman” situation!

It’s one thing to come up and ask “are you going soon?” and accept the response, and quite another to try to intimidate someone

Rowley456 · 30/09/2026 12:06

He was a double concentrated gold plated cheeky fucker.

FucksakeLavender · 30/09/2026 12:26

I wasn't giving off ready to move vibes; I had a book balanced on my steering wheel!

Self important plonker.

It's a good move to sit in passenger seat tbh, might try that one next!

YANBU. I drove out of my parking space for another driver recently and instantly regretted it as I realised I needed to pop to another shop and couldn't find a space again for quite a while.

I think other people's perceived urgency can make us act hastily sometimes, so well done for staying put.

I bet he wouldn't have tooted a burly looking man. Prat.

What is confusing about wanting support and solidarity?

B1anche · 30/09/2026 12:48

That is entitled. I have no qualms about mouthing "are you going?" if I see someone getting in or sitting in their car in a busy car park. If they shake their head, I just smile and mouth "Ok, never mind!" and off I go.

As a previous poster said, he would never have been that aggressive to another man.

Mauhea · 30/09/2026 12:55

I was once walking through a carpark with my son to get to my destination and a lady pulled up alongside me to ask if we were leaving. When I explained we were local and just walking through she tutted and rolled her eyes at me!
