To have binned all the pens

My 13 year old is struggling at French lessons at school and was sad about this, so I paid for an app to help with learning French. I also set her up on Duolingo. She didn't use either. I explained that she asked for help, I got her the app and now she's not using it, and suggested that at do it together. She did it a bit but was really reluctant and grumpy. After a while she refused to do it and said it didn't help anyway. I said that her French is improving but it takes time, but she insisted it was useless. I was a bit annoyed that she was so ungrateful and said "fine do it yourself. I've tried, you don't want my help, so I'll cancel the subscription". She's now struggling again with French, but I'm not going to fight with her to learn.

Today she was doing her homework and needed coloring pens. I have a box of colouring pens that we've accumulated over the years and she was going through them choosing the ones she wanted. I asked her to bin any that she found that didn't work. She looked at the box with contempt and said that none of them work and they should all be binned. I don't keep this box of pens for me, I keep them for her and I feel that whatever I do for her is not good enough. So I picked up the entire box and chucked it in the bin. Most of the pens were fine and I'm so tired of the ridiculous untrue sweeping statements of how crap everything is.

I think 13 is the worst age. She's probably really stressed inside. Hormones raging around too. Are you stressed yourself do you think? As I think your reaction was quite over the top to the situation.

Op i would have done the same, as you know what? I get very tired of teenage moaning and just snap at times.

Why are 13 year olds colouring in posters for homework? <misses point>

It sounds like you realised you reacted badly now, but in respect to the French, does your daughter actually want you to come up with solutions or just to be empathetic that language learning doesn't come naturally to everyone and be prepared to be the person who does language practice with her (sadly I've forgotten how to say "I watch documentaries with my mother on Sundays" in Spanish but I do remember practicing it sixty zillion times with DD and wondering why she had picked this sentence as we never did watch documentaries on Sunday or any other day).

You bought her an app, she used it for a bit and now doesn't found it helpful. She doesn't find DuoLingo helpful either. So can you work with her to find something that is helpful and that she will use. If she indeed wants a solution at all.

My son is in year 8 he has Duolingo but it won’t help that much with basic French such as counting and things like that if she’s struggling. I doubt as a teen your daughter needs to know ‘my niece and nephew live in Mexico’ 🤣 it’ll help when she gets better but not at this stage. Teens are grumpy it’s hard not to react but you need to try or the next few years are going to be hell!

Ok, you were right, I was childish. I've fished the pens out the bin and I'll colour in the poster for her as she's asleep now and she needs it tomorrow morning. I'm just worn down by trying so hard for her and it never being good enough.

Sje is a teen, nothing is ever good enough for them, Let her whinge, moan and cry but don't give into her. Offer everything you would normally do and she can either like it or lump it.

Missed an opportunity to teach "la plume de ma tante est dans le bin" *

(OK, "les plumes de ma mėre", but you get the idea 😀)

lol 😂. Also it’s …dans la poubelle 😃

*la poubelle! Why do the French always have nicer words for things than we do?!

She’s right about DuoLingo - it has its place but it won’t help with school French as it won’t follow the same curriculum.

And as for the pens - seriously, grow up OP. You need to model the behaviour you want to see in her.

Laurmolonlabe · 29/09/2026 10:03

Sorry, but you have to be the grown up- a fit of pique from you will not help the situation- throwing the pens away was childish and unnecessary, it would have been so if your daughter had done it, let alone you.

YABU.

Also, she’s right - Duolingo won’t help with school level French.

Agree...could she have some tuition outside school or discuss with her Head of Year.

I think you should have told her to bring you any pens that don't work.

That way she would have had to test them all.

Now she will just get new pens and she wins.
