AIBU to encourage my 18-year-old daughter to claim Universal Credit?

My daughter is 18 and no longer in education. She currently as a job (7.5 hours per week) and is waiting to start another job pending DBS checks. I advised her to make a claim for UC at the beginning of September before she was offered this position. She had to go to a meeting at the job centre this morning to start the claim and weekly check in video calls until she starts the job. This won’t be fixed hours as it is a bank staff role.
She has made such a fuss about it saying it is pointless basically acting like claiming is beneath her! We don’t charge her any board and don’t intend to after she earns more either but I have explained that technically we could. I just think it’s important to claim if she is eligible and also explained about NI contributions for when she gets older. I have explained that at some point the hope will be that she is earning enough that she doesn’t need to claim but for now she should.
Am I being unreasonable?

full NI needs 35 years payment so employment from age 20 to 55 would ensure that they qualify. I don’t know where the panic is about NI contributions for an 18 year old given we’ll all be working way past that unless we’re very fortunate to come into money and retire early

That's what normally seems to happen. Once you board the gravy train it is hard to get off.

😂

It's "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", not "Take everything you can".

If she doesn't need the UC, she really shouldn't be claiming it.

Edited

I disagree.

I had no experience of claiming benefits until I was unable to work due to disability.

I would have been eligible to claim something a few yers before had I know.

No body wants to live on benefits but learning to negotiate the system is a life skill.

OP She really does need to claim, as well as all the commitments sometimes claimants are sent on courses to improve job prospects.

Most employers refund fees for travelling to interview, and there are grants available for clothes for work. The government offers such grants as monthly UC benefits are meant to be for essentials for survival.

😂😂 not for entry level.travel to s job interview is essential.

My parents were far from wealthy. I funded myself for clothes and going out from school age as soon as I could get a weekend job. I worked school holidays too. I stayed in that job after my a levels and got a full time job because claiming benefits was far from my mind. An 18 year old can survive living at home and then find a job without the need for benefits if they live at home. Welfare is for those that need it, and the pressure on the country for funding welfare is through the roof.

How long ago was this? And where?
These opportunities for jobs just don’t exist any more.

You sound very angry. It's difficult for lots of people to get work at the moment. Experienced middle-aged workers, for example, are having a tough time and are often discriminated against in favour of younger workers! The climate is pretty dire all round (as I mentioned in my post) but I do still believe, generally speaking, that where there is a will, there is a way, yes. Sometimes it's about generating something ourselves if traditional routes to gaining employment aren't working.

How wonderful that you can deduce emotion from a few words on a screen. Yes I'm aware that middle aged workers are also finding it difficult. And other groups too, but this thread is about a teenager, and so my response was about teenagers.
