Looking after neighbours suitcase

Neighbour of ours, friendly known her for about 7 years is off on holiday next week.
We were talking about it over the wall yesterday and informed me she will be taking 3 cases and would it be ok if I keep the suitcases (packed) in my living room until the morning she gets picked up. I said yes of course and didn't ask why. My husband doesn't understand why we need to keep them here. I said don't be silly we are neighbours and it's the right thing to do. That's not unreasonable is it?

This thread would have gone in a totally different direction if you had lead with this tragic tale 2 days ago 😳.

😬

I haven't read all of it so I'm not sure where the thread did go.

Absolutely grim, though, isn't it.

Why couldnt she be returning from her own house?

There will be no one else there. Despite the suggestion on this thread that she could shout good bye and wave furiously, it’s hard to pretend the waving good bye in a convincing way if someone is actually watching for that. Not to mention, if she has to lock her door on the way out with a key, that will be a total giveaway.

What a good idea! I often worry about heading off on holiday with suitcases and have been known to wave goodbye to the cats and talk to the taxi driver about how on earth my vast (imaginary) family of strong men all armed to the teeth. Wouldn't work with Uber mind you - they have my home address...

Uber drivers aren’t told it’s your home address, though.

Thank you and that was exactly my reasoning and the point I was making to him. To me, if a neighbour asks for a favour it doesn't matter what it involves just that you try and help and be a neighbour

Me and my husband are still not speaking this morning so I went to collect the cases on my own and as suspected there is a very simple explanation to this as I told my husband several times. My neighbour was burgled once when she was on holiday, she wants to tell the taxi driver she is actually RETURNING home and that she was staying with us, I have agreed that me and my husband (I've not told him yet) will wave her off from our house. She will simple come into our house 10mins or so before the taxi arrives

You're a bit of a people pleasing idiot, I'm afraid.

Why doesn't she bring the suitcases when she comes 10 minutes before the taxi arrives?

Fortuity · 28/09/2026 07:57

Not only did you store the cases totally unnecessarily for a few days, you actually went to collect them from your neighbours rather than leaving her to bring them to you? Do you have "Mug" in large letters on your forehead?

PollyBell · 28/09/2026 08:11

So if they are casing the joint they would be a lot longer than 10 mins waiting, so the explanation to me is more bizarre than drug smuggling in a way

Moonandstarsandsun · 28/09/2026 06:48

?

Three days in and you come up with this?

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/09/2026 08:29

MistressMerkin · 25/09/2026 21:54

Whut?

Why can't she keep her luggage in her own house til she gets picked up? It's a seriously weird request.

Is she doing a flit? Escaping from DV? She may have reasons but you could have asked. If it was me going away I would hide my cases from my dog so she doesn't get anxious but I have room in my house to do that.

insomniacalways · 28/09/2026 08:40

Ah I can see why she gets anxious and if this helps alleviate the anxiety it is a very kind thing to do.

BeardySchnauzer · 25/09/2026 22:08

Are you a teeny bit worried she’s planning her holiday to be in your house?

This made me laugh a lot

CitizenofMoronia · 28/09/2026 09:54

the only INNOCENT reason is she just doesnt want the inconvenicence of having them taking up room in her house, yours is ok apparently.

BillieWiper · 28/09/2026 09:58

She's returning home? As in she wants the taxi driver to think she's a tourist visiting the area and actually lives in her holiday destination? Does she think the local taxi firms are somehow involved in her previous burglary?

Also that doesn't make her house appear any more occupied during her period of absence does it?
I genuinely don't understand why she thinks this bizarre charade will discourage burglary. She could just have timers/phone controls on lights, TV etc. or even just ask you/a housesitter to pop in and switch things on, water plants etc a few times.

Oh well. It must be dreadful experiencing burglary so I guess if it makes her feel more secure. I'd find it strange though. Even if she wants to make out like she's leaving yours, who's to say this burglar didn't see her leaving her cases with you, and knows that she's not in her own house?

User3353821614 · 28/09/2026 09:58

Mymanyellow · 26/09/2026 11:33

So she thinks the taxi driver will let it be known that she’s on holiday?

She sounds utterly nuts.

As do you OP.

Poor DH 😆

PollyBell · 28/09/2026 09:59

insomniacalways · 28/09/2026 08:40

Ah I can see why she gets anxious and if this helps alleviate the anxiety it is a very kind thing to do.

So the op has to drag suitcases to their place for the bag lady to visit 10 mins before to go off as ahe is paranoid she will be broken into so now it looks like op's place will look like no one is home as bag lady looks like ahe lives there and is now toddling off on holiday front the ops place so the people in balaclavas staking out the place will break into the ops place instead

And all this needs to happen as the bag lady is anxious?

whitenarcissus · 28/09/2026 10:41

notimagain · 27/09/2026 17:53

And do have a wee think about the whole 'security questions you're asked at the airport' thing.
They aren't asking you those questions to catch out your bag storing neighbour! They are asking them to catch out idiots who either leave bags with a holiday boyfriend who then stuffs it with cocaine and comes in on another flight to meet you, or the really dim ones who think saying 'oh no my boyfriend packed it' would get them out of a drugs trafficking charge.

For what it's worth the reason for the questions often asked at check-in, or bag drop, so obviously pre-departure: "did you pack this bag yourself" and sometimes "any possibility anyone might have interfered with the contents" etc is usually to do with explosives and explosive devices.......not drugs...

Edited

Except for... when it is for drugs.

It is insane to do this. I don't care how old or "nice" she seems. Nobody knows what she's got in there.

DangerousLesions · 28/09/2026 10:54

Weird and suspicious. Did you not ask why?

Givingmytwocents · 28/09/2026 11:03

But surely she's being collected at her own house, so then she'll have to call into you to get her suitcases - it just doesn't make any sense?

squarecrow · 28/09/2026 11:21

Seziah · 26/09/2026 14:33

That does make sense, I’ve heard before that gangs pay taxi drivers to tell them which houses they’ve collected people from for airport runs. Must’ve been horrible to come back to that

If that was the genuine suspicion, you’d call the taxi company and ask them to pick you up from the road you live on - say near number 10 (you live at 16) and that you’ll be waiting out in the street. You could then tell the taxi driver you’ve been visiting friends and are going home. Problem solved without storing suitcases in a neighbour’s house for a week.

Oh she's 70 you say 🤔 in your follow up post , after everyone is questioning your survival instincts 🤭. Bless you OP.

Quite a few pensioners have been done for drug smuggling. They don't fit the profile and need the cash. Although it is usually into the UK.

Redpaisley · 28/09/2026 11:37

TremendousFlatulence · 25/09/2026 22:27

Generally speaking - if someone asks you to do something ridiculous your first question should be 'Why?'. Not 'oh yeah, sure, I'll do that really stupid thing you're suggesting and no of course I won't ask any questions. I'll just do it'.
Are you fully in possession of your faculties OP?

I think op is a people pleaser and finds it hard saying no.

I know quite a few dodgy pensioners, I'm not naive but I suspect the OP might be a teeny tiny bit, going by the updates .

Sashimiandhisthunderpaws · 28/09/2026 12:00

Other people’s anxieties aren’t always rational to there. She does sound anxious, and increased anxiety re getting burgled whilst on holiday. I suspect as she’s already packed, in her mind it makes most sense that the suitcases are now ready in place at your house and she’s done all that she needs to do. Leaving bringing the suitcases until earlier on the day of departure is another thing for her to worry about.

Splitting 20kg across 3 suitcases is sensible for a lone woman in her 70s, who would likely find it difficult to get a heavy, bulky suitcase down the stairs on her own.

My mum will not open the small downstairs toilet window in case it gets forgotten and left when they go to bed and they get burgled. This was because she locked herself out one day and the neighbour was able to climb in through the small open bathroom window to let them in. They’ve were burgled once, via patio door. Both incidents over 30 years ago. But they still leave both back and front doors unlocked until bedtime (can be early hours), even though their hearing isn’t particularly good, and will wear noise cancelling headphones with the TV. Personally I’d be going through the back door if I were to burgle them…🙄 But to her the keeping that window shut is entirely rational.
