Panic buying next week?

Ok very random but I work in retail and we’ve been told to expect panic buying/shortages on fuel next week due to something big happening. Am I really naive as when I was told this I have no idea what it is about? I do read the news in the morning but I haven’t seen anything that would relate to this?

You're being very rude and would probably benefit from calming down a bit.

It’s hard to stock up on petrol when you definitely use a full tank per week for work travel. Job can’t be done virtually and it’s a very rural area between places that need to be visited. I’ve always filled up weekly so can’t really stock up. Just noticing each week the tank costs more.

Filling a jerry can really doesn't make you an idiot. People need to fill jerry cans for all sorts of reasons - breakdowns, ride on mowers, petrol tools such as hedge trimmers and chain saws..

I see my reply that correctly pointed out that the issue of people filling their car boots with multiple containers was the problem has been deleted! It really didn't need reporting! Believe you me I would rather you'd understood the point I was obviously making the first time round instead of pretending I was referring to a single jerry can! Where's the free speech in not being allowed to defend myself!

So basically anyone that responds to you gets reported by you. Maybe this isn't the place for you if two way conversation upsets you.

Lammpa · 30/09/2026 08:25

So has the panic buying started yet? We’re half way into “next week” now right?

Did you miss the first post when I mentioned China? As for the Ukraine the only thoughts I have are for the million plus dead the 10 million displaced and the weirdness of their president an ex actor who played a president on a comedy show, with no real traceable past with a wife who loves shopping in Paris while her country gets bombed.

🙄

Victim blaming. Russia invaded Ukraine. Putin is not the victim here. Although, I feel sorry for the young Russian men sent to their deaths for his ego.

The pp calling Ukraine "the Ukraine" tells its own story.

Me too. It’s horrendous. Idk every day Russian people can bear it.

I didn't report it

I actually do have a lot of posting history I just changed my username for this. Mumsnet is ridiculous sometimes though and people just love to come on and insult people for not reason. I won’t comment again as it’s pointless. I’ll wait and see next week. Hopefully what I have been told is wrong but if not then I’ll be back next week 😊

Still no panic buying @hubbabubbamomma

whoever “told” you (Darren from the deli?) - they were winding you up

pattercare · 30/09/2026 14:40

Has it happened yet or will it be Friday

And when Friday comes and go, it will then be “oh I meant next week”

Was going to ask this. It it going to be synchronised or staggered? Can someone ask someone who 'knows but can't talk about it'

It’s a bit like those weirdos that say the world is going to end on x date.

and then when x date comes and goes, they pipe up with “oh you misinterpreted me, I mean next New year”. And so on

Apparently you are next week and in a panic.

It is next week now, nearly the end of next week and nothing's materialised yet.
No shortages, no panic buying.

HoraceCope · 01/10/2026 07:36

but diesel prices will make a huge difference

Possibly some kind of cyber attack, so make sure you have cash at home aswell as supplies. Banks could be hit as some have been recently. Waters being tested IMO. Having cash at home means you can still buy what you may need. Just be prepared rather than oblivious as some posters seem to be.

How are all these tills operated with electricity going to work with the cash we should bring in case of power outage?

There were no Lidl's own chopped tinned tomatoes on Monday morning - so they'd either been stockpiled or not got round to putting them out yet.
I bought a more expensive brand.

When I worked at Morrisons they had a set-up where each till had a notebook, pencil etc. Items were classified into 3, cheap, medium priced, expensive cuts of meat etc and everyone would get to the tills to help out. Also had the old fashioned click clack things for cards (they wouldn't work now without the raised numbering, they'd have to be written)

Local shops will take coins, I'm sure we can go old school for a while and survive

Perhaps next week is a moving target. Then they can claim whenever a problem occurs and panic buying 'told you so'

I wonder whether the person who supposedly gave @hubbabubbamomma this intelligence feels a little red faced

lightand · 02/10/2026 14:00

Shops seem busy, but no panic buying I dont think.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 06/10/2026 17:00

Did this come to pass? I didn't get my loo roll on payday

HedgerowD · 07/10/2026 09:42

Trump has eased restrictions on the use of red diesel. No export bans yet. Hopefully it doesn't happen. Diesel is up to 2.03 a litre in our closest petrol station.
