AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

I get that we have been advised to stock up on essentials, though I think it will encourage panic buying. I will probably get a few days worth of stuff at some point . My friend however has, at least in my opinion gone ott about it. She’s stocking up a six month supply of food. She’s bought head torches, a camping gas stove and various other stuff. She thinks I’m being naive …Am I missing something here ?

You do. Like people who can own food etc.
New in a back, old in front. Like in shops (ha, as it should be in shops). You just simply rotate and refill whenever. That's why people shouldn't get things they don't eat just for the sake of it.
And these things last.

Most people who do this most certainly do not throw food away. They rotate , use and replace it. Those preparing are highly unlikely to be wasteful. It's literally illogical.

Literally nothing happens to it. Stored water can lose oxygen which makes it taste a bit stale. all you have to do is shake it and it re-oxygenates and tastes fine again.

there are concerns about plastics leaching into water but it they are just the general concerns about microplastics and BPA

@OriginalUsername2 We have a hedgehog that visits, you can cover them in mud apparently and bake them underground. There is a huge Maine Coon a few doors down he could feed us for a week but I like him so I think the Sparrow killing dick of a cat across the road can go first.

I have enough bottled drinking water for a week. None for cleaning/washing. I think that's the sort of thing that the govt. wants. So that if there is some sort of emergency, every household having some water to keep them alive gives them time to sort the problem out/help. I also have a few tins. They're just in my kitchen so no mega supply, I would just eat directly out of them in an emergency. I don't have a camping stove or anything like that as I don't camp. So, I'd be eating cold from tins and I don't care about that. I have also got very thick arctic type trousers and coat so I would wear that if there was no heating in winter.

If we get nuked or something, I will just be nuked. I live in a cookie cutter on a modern estate so no underground shelter etc. That would be quite a project to organise and maintain, even if I did have the possibility.

I do try not to let my petrol tank get too low before refilling. I do also have a radio.

If your friend wants 8 months of food, just let her crack on and probably discuss something else. I think that is extreme, but if a family of 4 had the same amount, it'd only last them 2 months. Perhaps she feels worried about being alone in an emergency.

If your friend is stockpiling now it takes the pressure off the shops when the shit hits the fan for those of us that haven't. I've will be one less person buying toilet paper and pasta as they have organised themselves in good time without affecting supply levels in shops.

I’m stockpiling nothing. There’s a field of cows at the bottom of our road. One of those buggers will keep us going for a week or two.

Oh good plan. Are you going out and stealing and killing cows the minute the power goes off, after day three or day five?
