AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Air freshener after a pee...why??
And at your work nothing says natural more
Than glade freshener.

No idea, unless she has been eating asparagus. That can make your pee smell a bit.

But I really don't get the air freshener requirement. Any immediate smell usually dissipates quite quickly.

Hate air fresheners, also you cannot use a nice smell to cover a bad one.

This.
It wouldn't ever occur to me.
I'm vegan which may make a difference but honestly other than the odd occasion where I've maybe been on holiday and eaten a lot of foods I wouldn't usually, you could go in the bathroom straight after I'd been for a number 2 and not smell anything.

Do you have bowel issues and/or a rubbish diet in your family? I'd understand why you'd have air freshener if so. But to expect others to always follow suit is unrealistic.

Fellow vegan, can confirm.

I assume that you have a built in extractor fan if you don't have a window? Most new build bathrooms without windows have an extractor.

Yes, comes on with the light but doesn’t do much to be honest. Takes out some steam after a shower or bath but it’s not great
work toilets don’t have extractors

Just have your big smelly shit before you leave home.

And this is why people want to cover it up with comments like that

nocoolnamesleft · Today 00:20

Spray air fresheners make me want to throw up. Far more so than the smell of bodily functions.

Crudd99 · Today 00:22

I have ibs i carry poo pouri with me all the time. I don't expect air freshener in loos.

Enigma54 · Today 00:25

We have reed diffusers in our toilets. Really good ones from Aldi. I’m not a fan of anything glade at all. Failing that, open a window or carry a poo pouri spray in your bag?

VenusThighTrap · Today 00:25

Happyjoe · Yesterday 23:49

So you use a brush - how do you clean the brush? How do you clean the bacteria in the loo? How do you stop dribbling bits of poopy water all over the seat while you put the brush part back in it's container?

This sounds a bit paranoid, why so much bleach - are you touching the inside of the bowl?

Whatever you do, don't read those stories explaining how there's way more bacteria on smartphones than there is on the toilet!

It may be that stuff that does a film on the surface of the water? Something like that. No idea if works tho!

Definitely works.

^I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?*

why would I put something int he bathroom that can't be used? It doesn't matter who sprays the tin

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Edited

Yes, but 99.9% of air fresheners actually smell worse than poo, so you are just disguising one bad smell with another bad smell which is pointless.

Also, they are really bad for you, and especially so in an enclosed space, whereas poo smell is not actually toxic to the body when breathed in.

Needless to say we don’t have them.

I'm confident that my shit smells nicer than your Glade spray.

Anonyanonay · Today 00:39

Spraying Glade around the bathroom just advertises that you've been for a poo in someone else's house. Yuck.

No, I don't want a load of synthetic headache-inducing horrible smelling chemicals in my house. I'll take my chance with the poo 💩

Same. They all smell god awful and are so bad for you and for the environment. Just total toxic pointless poison.

Artefact23 · Today 00:48

The best air freshener is an open window.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 00:51

I never said I use it after a wee Hmm

The OP said she used it after a wee. That’s what I was referring to in the second part of my post.

Drivingmissrangey · Today 00:53

Nothing says you’ve just done a massive dump like a spray of air freshener.

TeaAndTattoos · Today 00:55

YABU not everyone likes air freshener I don’t like the spray ones they make me cough I have a Febreze toilet freshener in my bathroom. You’re complaining about people not having air fresheners in their bathrooms but then turn round and say “I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?” 2 things firstly that’s not a question so no need for the question mark and secondly what is that even suppose to mean that makes no sense.

JoyousWriter · Today 01:03

I can't stand synthetic air freshener smells.

OriginalUsername2 · Today 01:05

Dozer · Yesterday 23:14

things to try to mask shit smells with a layer of a synethetic smell seem an odd thing to give a shit about

This. Crack a window and let it waft out. Spraying air freshener just means you create a funk of perfumed poo.

JoyousWriter · Today 01:07

Whoops75 · Yesterday 23:37

I have a press under the sink with toilet cleaner that could be used to mask a smell I suppose.
In friends homes I would poop, flush and then wipe and flush again. It only smells if it’s left hanging around too long.

What's a press?

BrokenWingsCantFly · Today 01:10

They never get rid of the smell, only add Synthetic sickly smell on top 🤢

When I lived at home there was a tiny WC with the only toilet, the air freshener would be sprayed after every poo the family had and I could always smell both, so the smell of air freshener makes me feel sick. Poo time here involves bleach poured around the pan after and the window left open

DrFoxtrot · Today 01:10

Agree with PP - air freshener is not masking any smell of shit. It’s much worse smelling floral or fruity spray mingled with shit 😂.

At my work, someone has left a bottle of fake Baccarat Rouge (which I can’t stand anyway) in the toilet so now we have toilet smells enhanced by cheap perfume. Grim.

Calendulaaria · Today 01:11

Those Glade spray things give me migraine that can last for days. Chemical perfumes are dangerous for some.
