AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

HangryBrickShark · Yesterday 23:11

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I'd rather a toilet brush was avaliable than sickly, stinky airfreshener to burn the back of your airways.
Opening the window deals with it- even if it's teenager strength odour.

Annoyedbyhusband · Yesterday 23:59

I don’t use any home fragrances apart from the reed sticks in glass jars. I honestly never want chemicals sprayed into the air like that. I think it’s selfish and wasteful. Creating more waste, more chemicals, for what, because you like people to think your shit doesn’t stink like everyone else’s?
WE ALL SHIT. And that is what toilets are for. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

LittleGreenShoots · Yesterday 23:59

You most definitely am not finding any in my bathroom, I can not stand the fragrance of air fresheners! Not asthmatic, just feel suffocated by the false sickly fragrances- I actually find it worse than the poo smell.

We have a window in the bathroom- if you make it smelly- open the window and get some clean air in for Christ's sake, don't make it smell overwhelmingly of floral poo, nobody needs to smell that.

Air fresheners are really unhealthy, research shows they damage the central nervous system, trigger migraines, cause breathing problems.

Maybe your friends value their health.

Itiswhysofew · Today 00:00

I don't expect to see it, but I always do in other people's loos. I've got air freshener in all of mine.

EmiliaRosa · Today 00:01

I have loo rolls - non scented lol a toilet brush, a bin, sanitary bags (because who wants to put their tampons ect into someone's bin) reed diffuser on the windowsill and a spray tucked down the side of the toilet if needed next to the harpic

We do but after someone made awful comments to me as a teen, I refused to go anywhere but at home.
Then endometriosis meant I needed to so I bought some of the poo pourri to try, and it worked so I use that. It’s 2 sprays into the water so not like you’re choking people with febreze

Bikenutz · Today 00:02

I’m one of the ‘open the window’ brigade.

And if you’re feeling paranoid about smells, squirt some toilet cleaner / bleach around the rim before flushing. Most people keep some near the loo.

I have never in my life bought air freshener…

Deadringer · Today 00:03

I hate air fresheners, crack a window if your shit stinks. Teenage dd insists on spraying perfume after using the loo and she usually leaves the window closed, you go in after her and feel like you have been pepper sprayed! Ugh

tokennamechange · Today 00:04

"I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?"

Surely you've answered your own question there - if someone suffers from asthma they won't have it in their house therefore won't be there for you to use!

Anyway, just open a window if you really feel the need to poo at a friend's house, something which in nearly 40 years of life I don't think I've ever done...Just hold it until you're home if you're that worried.

Yes, some people have bowel issues etc but if they get caught short that frequently and were so paranoid about leaving a smell, I'd say the onus was on them to come prepared with poopourri or perfume or whatever.

mymswashing · Today 00:06

Am I the only odd one that doesn’t have a window? People keep saying open one, I’ve got two bathrooms and neither have windows
none of the toilets at work have windows either

NolanChanceJustLikeTheWeatherNSoul · Today 00:06

Some of those reed diffusers are awful
One we bought gave us banging headaches within the hour.
Binned never bought one again

DrCoconut · Today 00:07

I have bowel issues and would only poo in a friend's toilet or small shared facility (such as one of the options at work) if I couldn't possibly wait. No one deserves to be next in line after that! Major and anonymous public toilets are fair game.

EmeraldShamrock000 · Today 00:07

Nope. There is toilet cleaner. You might find a body spray in the bathroom cupboard.

MargotGobby · Today 00:07

They smell really gross and chemically. I wouldn’t normally voice this, but seeing as you judged first, I think they are quite tacky

So you use a brush - how do you clean the brush? How do you clean the bacteria in the loo? How do you stop dribbling bits of poopy water all over the seat while you put the brush part back in it's container?

You don't need to bleach daily, let alone every time you poo! I only use bleach once a week, minimal quantities. Excess bleach is not healthy for humans any more than it is for the environment.

I lift the seat before brushing, rinse it in a second flush, let the excess run into the loo and return to holder. It doesn't drip. I grew up in houses with septic tanks where bleach kills the bacteria you need for them to function so this is all I have ever done.

It is not as if anyone is eating out of the loo!

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Edited

I only remember one person saying that (up to this point anyway) and it was the vegan.

I assume that you have a built in extractor fan if you don't have a window? Most new build bathrooms without windows have an extractor.

comeoncolleen · Today 00:10

But air fresheners smell worse and are bad for the environment. Cleaning the loo and opening a window is better.

Kokonimater · Today 00:10

No, do not use them, they are terrible fake chemical smells. Really unhealthy. I don’t know any person that would use them.
If ever I have visitors over, I might light a small candle in the bathroom.

RafaFan · Today 00:11

But air fresheners don't work to cover up that smell. They just combine with it to make an even worse smell. Open a window or switch on the extractor fan.

Bowies · Today 00:11

Open a window ffs I’d only be annoyed if there wasn’t loo roll.

weareallcats · Today 00:12

No to air freshener - it smells bad. Opening a window is much better.

I do burn incense at home - Japanese sage - but that is just a general thing, not in the loo.

This thread had reminded me of an ex boyfriend who used to very obviously go for a shit and then spray an insane amount of air freshener. 25 years ago and I can still remember the cloying artificial lemony smell. I’m hesitant to say shit would have been better, but maybe it would have been.

TinaBeliever · Today 00:14

Just have your big smelly shit before you leave home.

There’s no such thing as ‘flushable wipes’. They may say they are on the packet but it’s a marketing lie. They’re terrible for toilet systems and plumbing and don5 break down properly. They should be binned (and banned if they continue to perpetuate the lie that they’re flushable).

As for needing air freshener at all but especially after a wee - if your urine smells that bad you’re dehydrated or worse and probably need to see a doctor.

I never said I use it after a wee Hmm
