To be worried about filthy childminders house?

Signed up in the summer and all seemed fine. Today had a settling in session and was really shocked at the state of the house. Not just kids mess but tbh really dirty

I don’t really have a choice re childcare and she’s only there a couple of hours a day so part of me thinks leave it another part thinks I’m being really neglectful sending her there!

You were very cagey to begin with, you refused to give details, posters are not looking for her address to call in and have a look, you know what poster's mean when they ask how dirty. Its not outing to describe how dirty something is.

You have drip fed the information and people are getting annoyed with you, all you had to do was describe the level of dirt. What you are describing is a health hazard and a fire hazard, if you want to pay them to mind your precious child in a shithole then that's on you.

Oh and no need to tell me how difficult it is to get childcare

Zippidydoodah · Today 22:05

What do you mean, they don’t publish their name and address? You can look up childminders by their name.

Olive123456 · Today 22:09

Do the childminder a huge favour and don't send your child to her.

You can find some, but lots don't publish their names and addresses on the Ofsted website so you won't be able to use a name to find a report.

I know that this is meant to be sarcastic but you don’t leave bits of congealed food and dirty plates out all day, I’m guessing (or do you?) No one’s expecting a plate to clean itself while someone’s still eating, but that’s not what I’m talking about, which tbh I think you do know.

I would imagine that yes, a child minder does leave dirty plates out all day, and washes them in the evening.

Because during the day, a child minder would be too busy doing what they're supposed to be doing to wash dishes... you know... watching children?

I stand corrected! I just had a little look, and some of the childminders I know came up while others didn’t. Do they choose whether to be “searchable” or not?

Yes, they choose. You're still searchable but just by number, not name/address.

Hellohelga · Today 22:19

If you’ve got no choice but send her there then try and not dwell on this. The house may be a bit grubby but so is the school playground and toilets. Kids are very resilient, and coming into contact with some germs will build up her resistance. Loads of kids grow up in grubby homes and think about farmers kids running round with all the animals and poop. The main thing is that she is happy and safe there.

Booboobagins · Today 22:19

So you dont mean the floor was dirty. There was mud cacked in everywhere. Surfaces were covered in thick dust and everywhere looked grubby. You mean she hadnt yet washed the plates up in the kitchen?

Seriously unless the kids are in the kitchen, thats not a big issue. She just needs a bit of time to pop them in the dishwasher or to manually wash them.

You have no idea if she was about to sort it when a kid needed changing or was about to have an accident.

Keep an eye on it, but if no risk or impact on the children, then it's no real issue unless shes supposed to have help and hasnt arranged that...

maggisimpson · Today 18:26

Well dirty plates all over the house would have been a worrying level of dirty.

Dirty plates in the sink is pretty normal.
Were they kids plates from lunch?

Dirty plates in the sink is still dirty.

crazeekat · Today 22:27

ubu as a few hours in that hours is too many. That’s disgusting for a childminder to have kids in a place like that. Totally unprofessional.

babyproblems · Today 22:29

I don’t think a few plates are an issue but actual filth would be

Yes, this is what matters. Unhygienic, filthy surfaces etc. is a worry. Dirty plates on the counter or sink are not, unless they’re covered in mould/have clearly been sitting there for days.

tennispros · Today 21:47

Well, it kind of is if it’s left on a plate all day! But anyway it doesn’t matter, what people do in their own homes is none of my business, it’s just it has left me feeling like the setup isn’t ideal.

But it is your business, if you’re sending your child there?

Honestly, there’s no way I would leave my toddler anywhere I had even the smallest doubt about. Especially as you can’t find the Ofsted report?

But you keep saying..
”it’s only 2 hours”
“only twice a week”
”DC won’t be eating there”
”I’ll have to muddle through”

Your mind is obviously made up, so bit of a pointless thread tbh.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · Today 22:36

tennispros · Today 18:21

Well, dirty, not clean, you know? Lots of dirty plates and dishes lying around, that was the main thing that was offputting.

Messy or grimey? I would call plates mess, maybe you caught her on a bad day! But if there’s like pure built up grime then no way I’d send my kid there.

spirah · Today 22:41

Hang on a minute.

Would you have her make you some tea and toast on the plates/ cups etc and in the kitchen you saw?
If the answer is no then you should take your dd out now.

From what you described I am genuinely shocked you’ve left dd there. No job should come before her wellbeing.

EconomyClassRockstar · Today 22:45

I'd be worried too OP. I used to be a child minder when my eldest were small and it's part and parcel of the job to keep on top of your house being clean. I know you say there is no alternative but I'd start looking for one, if I were you.

StarsTwinklingPomanders · Today 22:51

As pp said it's hard do get upset about dirty plates id rather my child minder was looking at after child than fussing about getting plates into a dish washer . However it's hard to say.

Letthesunshine1234 · Today 22:53

NewNameW · Today 19:58

Respectfully, a OCD person wouldn't allow a kid to go back to anything less than their standards every day. It's not a pick and choose situation in that regard.

I don’t understand what you mean. To be clear my point is that if the OP has OCD regarding cleanliness then it is very unlikely she will find a childminder that lives up to those expectations. If the house is just untidy - that’s ok to try and see if it was a one off but if grimy I would not put my child in there.

StarsTwinklingPomanders · Today 22:56

No, but it’s not very nice to leave food rotting all day @likelysuspect , not being critical, it’s your home and up to you but …same again @maggisimpson , I just don’t think leaving dirty plates and rotting food for ages is very nice, if I am being honest.

Thanks @Newmeagain , I do appreciate it when people ‘get it’!

Food isn't rotting all day though is it food takes days to rot !

Many children playing will get lots of toys out.
