AIBU to tell DH his once-weekly tooth brushing is off-putting?

SweetAudry · Yesterday 22:28

A few months ago DH told me he felt his teeth were worsening in both health and appearance (I had noticed this too but was too polite to tell him!) and he suggested he should maybe brush them more often.

I asked now often he currently brushed them (meaning how many times a day) and he said “probably once a week or so” 😱 I found this shocking at told him so! He said from now on he’ll do them at least once a day.

He did this for about a week and now he’s back to never doing them. I know he’s not brushed them at all this week as I moved his toothbrush and it’s still exactly where I left it. I find it really off putting.

I don’t like to embarrass people by pointing out personal things like this but once a week (if that!) is shocking isn’t it? WIBU to tell him even though he will probably be offended?

Tell him he’s a disgusting skank. Embarrass him as he should be embarrassed

How can you be intimate with someone with such foul hygiene?

There is apparently a link between poor oral health and heart disease.
He needs to change this habit for several reasons :

It's also been linked with dementia and earlier cognitive decline

When did he last go to a dentist? Maybe you could suggest a check up. I'm sure a dentist would have plenty to say about the impact of his lack of care.

MiddleAgedDread · Today 08:29

You need to make him a reward sticker chart!

VanCleefArpels · Today 08:36

So every meal he eats through the week lingers between his teeth?? Uuurrgghhhhhh. I’m guessing you don’t kiss much.

blackpooolrock · Today 08:41

You didn't tell your DH his teeth looked off because you didn't want to seem impolite? What kind of relationship do you have with him?

Of course you can mention personal hygiene issues. If he didn't keep brushing them daily then tell him he's disgusting. If he's not brushing his teeth what else doesn't he do when it comes to personal hygiene?

Annoyedbyhusband · Today 08:42

This would actually be an ultimatum from me, brush daily or it’s the end. Not least that you will be the one having to listen to his moans and care for him when he has his teeth pulled out or abscesses etc, let alone the stinky breath and bacteria. I would have no qualms in saying that it is gross and unacceptable.

Girlwithavibe · Today 08:47

Jeez why U not saying anything!!!
My DH is obsessed with keeping his teeth clean and flossing but if he eats summit smelly I say ewwww your breath stinks and that's from someone who brushes his teeth 3 X a day lol 😁
How have u not smelt it or said anything ??
If your married it's normal to say these things to each other, he needs to be embarrassed 😳

Dryshampoofordays · Today 08:51

Dear god my dog has better oral hygiene than your husband

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · Today 08:52

Dental and oral health have implications for many more conditions, including heart health. Brushing is about far more than hanging on to teeth and is an essential part of basic hygiene. Get fun flavoured toothpastes and sonic toothbrushes, make it something g you do at the same time, integrate it into your routine as a habit, plus research why we brush!

sanityisamyth · Today 08:53

Sounds like my now ex-husband. He ended up having to have teeth removed as they were rotten. His breath stank and he wondered why I never wanted to kiss him, or do anything else for that matter. It was gross.

Laurmolonlabe · Today 09:02

I don't believe he doesn't know everyone else brushes twice a day- tell him brush twice a day or save up a lot of money to have them replaced-it's as simple as that.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · Today 09:07

Surely it's more embarrassing for him to allow him to walk around with chronically unbrushed teeth than to say something...

I struggle with the motivation to brush myself and occasionally skip an evening or morning but this is next level. After 24 hours or so of not brushing, soft plaque turns to hard tartar that can't be brushed off.

I would book him a hygienist appt as an early birthday present (and tell him he needs to start brushing regulsrly NOW)

Steeleydan · Today 09:10

Sounds gross he must have the breath of a 1000 camels! Get him to dentist ASAP for a special deep clean/root plaining treatment with the hygienist, his teeth must be held together with plaque

Shinyandnew1 · Today 09:11

Did you not tell him that the advice has been for decades (and what most people do) is to brush teeth twice a day?

I would have found this a monumental turn off many years ago. Does he ever visit a dentist?

LongDarkTeatime · Today 09:17

Does your DH have a sensory issue which makes it unpleasant to brush his teeth? Some people just avoid it without having questioned why before. They can find smaller or softer headed toothbrushes (like electric ones) more comfortable. I’d also suggest linking the brushing to another regular activity eg every morning wee has to be followed by brushing. Or even set a reminder on his phone. The prospect of never being kissed again, and dentures, should give him some motivation.

Vanillaicelatte · Today 09:21

Jesus
his teeth must be disgusting
I use a water flosser several times a day normally after I’ve eaten something
and I brush them twice a day
go to my dentist every year for a check up and regular hygienist appointments

CaptainMyCaptain · Today 09:23

My DH is super careful about dental hygiene but I had to tell him he had bad breath recently. He thanked me as he would rather know and do something about it. He has a dentist appointment next week.

Dentist here. If he showers daily, put a toothbrush and toothpaste in the shower.

You mean he brushes his teeth while he's having a shower? I've heard of people doing that: I think it's disgusting.

omghereistrouble · Today 09:39

Send him to the dentist or better still hygienist they will soon put him straight!

So, I have been called out on this thread for showing some empathy and reaching out to op in her situation with some ideas - like I am strange.

Sure, some of my ideas were based directly on what I did with my kids …but op’s husband’s behaviour is disordered and he needs some help to get beyond the barriers. (What is going on for him, I don’t know).

Also, op doesn’t have to use my suggestions but it is nicer to be met with some offers of support rather than name calling or shaming.

Sometimes some different actions can make all the difference and if someone is stuck with something- you have to make the steps even smaller.

Edited

That’s not empathy ! It’s not her who needs the ideas.

How often does he wash his cock, just out of interest?

Why "disgusting" ?????

Specialagentblond · Today 10:46

@Rightsraptorits better than not at all. It’s the habit that’s important.
