OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

Temptree · Yesterday 12:16

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

I quickly gave up on her autobiography. I found it tiresome.

MM being on ITV reminds me that Diana Mosley was on Desert Island Discs. Everyone knew she was a raging anti-Semite, but the BBC had her on anyway for the listening figures that the controversy would bring.

I’m not sure that she was being ‘racist’ in a ‘woke’ environment for shock value but attempting (albeit badly) to transcend the talk show narrative to actually discuss race. I don’t believe that she condones discrimination based on race or any other characteristic. Once learning that Andi was not mixed race as both his parents were black she then referred to earlier genetic heritage. In a crude way. If Andi did a program such as ‘who do you think you are’ the same issues may be raised. Would that be racist?

How can we discuss discrimination if we are not able to discuss the different ways that discrimination operated in terms of race, sexuality, religion etc. The categories are arbitrary but the experience is real.

She had no need to talk about Andi Peters heritage or whether he was mixed race or not that isn't why she was on the programme she was promoting her book. She also didn't need to tell Andi Peters he was "accepted" now. Also didn't need to call him the name she did!

She has by different observations racist undertones about her, this isn't the first time she has commented about a black person infront of said black person.

ETA. I get the impression she sees people of colour as "exotic"

Nope but she’s an absolute dick so nothing would surprise me.

She lives near me and wasn't always so outre although her shorts look took some getting used to.

She has a book out; that says it all.

NancyThompson · Yesterday 16:02

I don't think "high yella" is a term for polite company any more.

Weeellokthen · Yesterday 16:03

Marellain · Yesterday 12:37

I don’t know who andI peters is. What exactly was wrong with what she said? She asked him if he was mixed race, and he isn’t? Please explain! Oh ok just saw she said high yella. Is that from Tennessee?

Edited

😮not a Brit then
Everyone knows who Andi is 😂

Are you actually Kay Burley? You're doing the same thing she did on live TV, asking everyone to remember that he's also a "decorated war hero" or some irrelevant bullshit (not verbatim, I can't remember her exact comment but similar), when literally being part of a live interview with women urging victims of his sexual assaults to come forward. Awful.

Who? The war hero, not Kay Burley.

Or horribly young!
Andi Peters will always= childhood telly in my world.

Katflapkit · Yesterday 16:07

I totally agree, for a good few years now she has been milking the 'Batty old bird'
Character but she pushing and pushing it's really gone too far.

Racism is everywhere. People of that generation are more prone to it as they grew up in less progressive times, and they’re not necessarily up to speed with current discourse on race. (That does also apply to half MN tbf).

I’m not saying your lovely grandma is personally racist I’m just saying there’s a quite a bit of it about in that generation, so if I were you I’d stop trying to pretend there isn’t.

I don't know if you are deliberately pretending not to get my point. It isn't a difficult one to understand.

You really don't have to tell me that racism is everywhere. And I'm not pretending in the slightest that there isn't a lot of racism in the older generation. There is obviously plenty of it. Nobody is claiming otherwise.

However, I don't like seeing age used as an explanation or an excuse for racism because I find that there is just as much racism in middle aged and younger people. Sometimes even more.

People are not racist because of their age. They are just racist.

No, but I can't stand her.
She's made a career out of trying to offend everyone and be shocking.
It's just not funny and I wish she'd toddle off into the sunset and do something else.

Tolkienista · Yesterday 16:10

Miriam is an ageing woman with very controversial TV appearances now racking up behind her.
I honestly don't know if she does this sort of thing on purpose, but I do know it's becoming tiresome.
She comes across as vulgar and not giving a damn what others say about her controversies. I doubt she'll lose any sleep over this.

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · Yesterday 16:10

Aluna · Yesterday 14:14

Racism is acceptable everywhere, actually. On MN. Social media. Broader media. Society.

We’ve just watched a black man be kicked to death in the media. And MNers joined in.

So rather than wagging your finger at me, I’d suggest you look around yourself a bit more carefully.

Are you talking about Jason Arday??

I agree. I loathe the woman. She's one of those brash bullies who makes out she is fun and a bit naughty to cover up for being a cow. And people simper around her.

Weregoingonabearhuntwegonnafindabear · Yesterday 16:12

Just read shes had a warning from GMTV ....

Lampzade · Yesterday 16:12

She just wanted to say something about his colour to shock
High yella would be something like Beyoncé’s or Rhianna’s skin tone

MM really need to stop with her nonsense.
She is not funny

DuskyRoses · Yesterday 16:13

she's childish with a massive ego.

No doubt it will help her book sales. That will please her, and her publishers.

None!

I also think tv companies encourage her by letting her on live TV, if she is promoting her book her management should organise a press junket so she can be edited for day time tv, but everybody including Miriam knows "controversy " is her selling point.so won"t

Oh come on my parents are late 60s/early 70s and they would never say this to someone!

I doubt even my late grandparents would have said it - they might have enquired about where his parents were from which could be considered racist these days- but they wouldn’t have meant it in a bad way and would have been genuinely interested in the answer

Being old doesn’t excuse racism

I actually gasped when I heard what she said, and I’m not an overly sensitive “snowflake”!

nicepotoftea · Yesterday 16:20

I was trying to work out why I know Andi Peters from the broom cupboard when he is the same age as me and wasn't presenting when I had children, and it's because he would have been presenting on BBC1 just before Neighbours back when you couldn't miss it.

He is the British institution.

HorribleHisTories15 · Yesterday 16:21

Oh please don’t spoil her for me, I only just suggested to DD5 last night that she should listen to the Worst Witch audiobook at bedtime. It worked a treat during this back to school week.

Gloriia · Yesterday 16:23

Beachtastic · Yesterday 15:41

She's a tiresome attention seeker. It's only a matter of time before it backfires on her, hopefully now.

Yep. Let's hope this is it for her 'silly me aren't I such a naughty goofball' crap.

Marieb19 · Yesterday 16:23

She has always been deliberately, provocative and revolting. However, as the targets she was obnoxious to were regarded as Conservatives and Reform the MSM loved to give her a platform to spout her bile. Maybe she has crossed the rubicon.

ElusiveSunshine · Yesterday 16:23

Love Andi Peters ❤️ it wasn’t appropriate of MM at all, not fair on Andi and made him and all of us uncomfortable. Agree with others her thing is to shock but referencing racist terms, no!

In a complete aside I wish it was ok to openly talk about and celebrate human skin, all the myriad of different colours and tones there are. I think skin is one of the most beautiful things on planet earth, so diverse and everything it is and everything it does for us is wonderful. Heritage and genetics equally fascinating, who we all are, our roots and different ethnicities etc. But because of racial hatred no one talks about skin or ethnicity which is sad, it’s lovely!
