Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

Check online first or ring ahead if there is an issue like this that it’s important to you.

If dogs are allowed and you choose to go there, it’s a you problem.

I hit peak dog when one had a shit on the floor in front of me in B&Q. I said "ewwww" as you would - owner said "was that her?" My response was that it certainly wasn't me. Dogs - other than proper guide dogs, hearing dogs or assistance dogs - should not be in shops or restaurants. And there should be a ban on people buying stupid coats for their pets from Amazon and saying that it is an emotional support animal.

Dog sitter or sit in an outdoor area then? If he was a rescue wasn't he actual in a kennel when you rehomed him?

Me too. There are very few places I can actually go to now .

Restaurants and cafes are for people.

Restaurants and cafes are for whoever the owners / managers of those establishments decide they are for. There's a cafe near me that apparently serves ice cream for dogs.

No one wants it sat licking it's bum or shaking fur everywhere whilst they're trying to enjoy a meal or coffee out.

Valid, but in this case the onus is on them to go somewhere which doesn't allow dogs - and they need to accept there may well be a guide dog in there anyway.

Complaining about dogs being in a dog-friendly establishment is highly illogical at best.

I don’t see anything wrong with a minority of establishments being dog friendly, if the presence of dogs bothers someone so much then they can go somewhere that doesn’t allow them.

I can’t think of a single time an experience of mine was ruined by a badly behaved dog in an establishment, but I’ve had plenty of experiences ruined by kids that don’t behave and parents that won’t parent them. Even in adults only areas people will bring their children and allow them to be disruptive.

I see so many anti dog threads on here, when I think in reality they’re a very very minor issue for most people compared to badly behaved kids.

Same experience we have had many times. Often, fellow diners don’t even realise our dog is with us until we get up to leave and she comes out from under the table. If she was barking and whining thoughout our stay in the way that a lot of kids whinge and whine then I’m sure we would have been asked to leave.

How is it a piss take? You don’t like dogs, don’t go to dog friendly establishments.

I like PP idea of a paw symbol on the door to make it clear. I live on the outskirts of a National Park, so it’s definitely the default here that places are dog friendly.

To be honest most of the dogs i see lie down under the tables/at the side. I don’t agree with dogs on seats but other than that it doesn’t bother me.

Kids running around while hot food and drinks are being served. Kids not parented, touching other tables,cutlery crawling on the floor etc. In and out the toilets. Aren’t anymore hygienic tbh.

41% of households owning dogs isn't the majority. I'd love to know how many of that group are the kind who take their animals everywhere Vs the people who don't. And why is it only dog owners? I don't see people who own cats or guinea pigs insisting on taking them everywhere.

I personally wouldn’t take my dog into a restaurant, beer garden yes, pub grub in a traditional pub if it’s raining and the owners have a dog themselves, yes. Cafe outside only because they tend to be short of space and public transport because I don’t drive. My dog in 15 years has never got into a fight so that wouldn’t cross my mind to be fair.

Theres a lovely cafe near me with a sign outside - Dogs welcome , well behaved owners allowed . Always makes me smile .

There was a wretched dog in Ikea yesterday. There’s no safe space anymore away from them.

I can't say as I've noticed or dogs in a venue has ever bothered me. We don't tend to take our greyhound as the pubs near us are tiny and people might trip over her paws when she lies down. We bring her a doggie bag or take her if we can sit outside.

Oh yes it must be projection that when our dog is left alone he paces and sometimes cries but when he is with us he lays quietly under the table.

If you said no badly behaved dogs and no feral kids then that would be reasonable. No need to exclude all dogs

Did you say anything to the restaurant? Because it's not the people with the dogs that are the problem, it's the establishment. They've decided they'll make more money if they allow dogs, than if they don't. And they're probably right, unless people who don't like them start complaining and making it clear they won't be eating there in future.

There’s plenty of restaurants that do not allow dogs, why not check before you book and tell the restaurant why you aren’t booking

We got sick and tired of getting soaked or freezing so we are going to sit inside when it is allowed.

I’m a dog owner and I agree. Dogs should be outside only.

ETA in eating establishments, at home dogs are allowed on the sofa and bed etc, before anyone chastises me for keeping dogs outside. But I think that it isn’t fair on others to bring dogs inside where people are eating.

I am fine with it in a pub like a specific area like the bar area that allows dogs.

Do not want them in every restaurant and cafe. Especially when they aren't trained and bark at everything and everyone.
