Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

This is what’s so confusing
Dogs used to be just fine left tied up outside or left at home having a snooze
And the talk about separation anxiety.. surely this is 90% projection?

I do think the term 'fur baby' or 'fur babies' should be banned.

This is why I believe every restaurant should display clearly on their window and on their website if they are dog friendly or not.

I had to call ten brunch places in South London once just to find one that wasn’t dog friendly.

My issue is not even the fact that so few don’t allow dogs and so many do - that’s up to them if they want dogs there .

My issue is the fact restaurants don’t always advertise it.

I propose a national symbol (perhaps a paw?🐾 )that all shops and restaurants display on their window/websites to let us know if they allow dogs - so the ones who are ok with that can go there and those of us who don’t can’t go elsewhere. Everyone wins!

Perhaps email the manager and advise them you’d prefer them to advertise it being dog friendly.

If they are well behaved and under good control they don't bother me. I even like them and used to have two of my own.

Same with children.

You need to find a place that doesn't encourage dogs, though all are obliged to accept assistance dogs.

Nope, our dog is part of the family and would always come on holiday with us.

If you go on holiday with your dog eat a takeaway, sit outside, pub garden away from everyone else. We have had a dog (18 years) and never took him into a restaurant or cafe ever. A pub that didn't serve food, yes if allowed. It was just part of being a dog owner. He loved every sort of food apart from fruit and chewing gum so wasn't safe to take in anywhere, so we didn't.

We live near an outlet centre and the number of bloody dogs in all the shops is dreadful and I hate it. It is not a suitable place for them and there are lots of children around. Leave the dog in a daycare or kennels if you are away on holiday, otherwise at home.

It's shocking she's doing that, daughter of the actress who played MASHs Hoolihan.

Started off suing the wrong place and costing them a fortune in legal fees too. She will close down a community hub for a community she doesn’t lie in because she can't leave her dog at home.

I don't hate dogs but this sort of dog owner is the problem.

YANBU @Doseofreality , environmental health is supposed to ensure animal hair doesn't reach food, 3 dogs in such a small area doesn't sound clean to me.

Generally dogs are dogs not humans, shouldn't be on public sofas etc, one smallish dog that is well trained is very different and 3 large dogs very uncommon.

I've just been away with a friend who travels a lot in the UK with her (lovely and well-behaved) dog. She has taught the dog that the boot of her car is his safe space. It obviously doesn't work on hot summer days, but he was entirely fine sitting there for a couple of hours at a time with the windows cracked open while she nipped to art galleries, shops or anywhere where dogs might not be welcome. She'd then take him on a long walk where he could happily do doggy things! There is a way around these things.

I have several dogs and never inflict them on people trying to eat. Even when impeccably behaved they still shed, fart and can always be unpredictable at the worst possible moment on account of being animals rather than accessories…

It's the furry pound I'm afraid. I would rather a pub full of dogs, than feral children and their yummy mummies on Prosecco at 8pm!

What’s your point? I would feel disgusted if I saw the server take a wee and then not wash his hands. But I was not witness to that. It’s not a race to the bottom though.

It is becoming very clear from your posts what kind of owner you are. Thankfully there are many good owners on this thread. You give them a bad name though, which is a shame.

I agree. Dogs are not people! It is getting ridiculous! If places want to accommodate them, they should absolutely have dog friendly and dog free areas. I have allergic asthma and really notice that dogs are allowed everywhere now!

I agree. I hate dogs in restaurants. I hate their owners even more when they tell me 'they're just being friendly' Dogs should never be allowed anywhere that food is being served.

I'm not keen, but tablets with the sound up annoy me more.

Dog owners behave atrociously now

we have a relative who insists on bringing their (large) dog whenever they visit. Why can’t the shitty bastard be alone for a couple hours?

Well I don't want to eat a picnic in the rain or always eat at the accommodation or have a grotty takeaway thank you.

Me and DH have had dogs for almost 50 years and for most of those years dogs were not allowed in cafes or restaurants nor in most hotel and often not in pubs. We had no choice therefore but to sit outside whether it was pouring, freezing cold or red hot. Now, thankfully, we have come in line with most of Europe and we can sit inside in comfort with our dog

Have you seen the many responsible dog owners here who disagree with you? Please don’t generalise, as many are better than you.

What?! Restaurants and cafes are for people.

Leave your dog at home. No one wants it sat licking it's bum or shaking fur everywhere whilst they're trying to enjoy a meal or coffee out.

I love these threads. All the foaming at the mouth when there is nothing you can do about it. The majority want to be able to take their dogs with them when they are out for the day and that usually includes a meal out too. The RSPCA says that dogs shouldn’t be left alone for more than four hours so it makes sense to include them on days out from that perspective too.
People should train their feral, screaming brats before criticising dog owners IMO.
