Have you had a deep, clean and root planing, or just the above gumline scale and polish. Have they recommended corsodyl mouthwash and gum repair toothpaste.

I presume so because its a periodontal clean which tackles deep pockets ! Hygienist said they were only a mild pocket depth

What foods can make this worse ? I do drink coffee though I always have lots of water to hand and take a bottle of cb12 to work ! Plus always chew gum ! It's ruling my life

For me, I think sugar and jelly sweets have an impact. Weird I know but I think there is a connection. I think my breath is worse when I'm dehydrated too. I'm only speaking from my own experience though.

Nikkinic87 · 26/08/2026 16:26

I have corsodyl toothpaste the gum and breath one and did also have the chlorhexidine mouthwash but it was giving bad staining

I may have to ask for monthly cleans ! Only thought you could have 3 monthly cleans ! Thank you

Ask you hygienist about a special periodontal clean/root plaining, it's takes about an hour,it tightens up the pockets where bacteria can get in. I had one, it was about £200

Try Curasept mouthwash instead. It’s like Corsodyl but doesn’t stain. They sell it on Amazon

How many mm are your pockets? And how many?

Does the TP brush/floss smell bad after you've used it?

Do you use chlorhexidine mouthwash?

Can you ask someone who you trust to tell you truthfully if you do have smelly breath?

You may need a periodontal specialist. They can clean under the gum and even do surgery to reduce the pockets. Can you ask your dentist if they have one at their practice?

Yewlez · 26/08/2026 17:20

DH used to have really bad breath and nothing he did would get rid of it then he had to have his tonsils out and it went away overnight.

I would seriously look into whether you can get your tonsils removed even if you have to do it privately.

MarilynMerlot · 26/08/2026 17:45

How do you know you have bad breath though? Maybe the person who backed away was a one-off after some strong coffee? Sounds like the mints moment was a non-issue.

momager22 · 26/08/2026 17:51

Do you use a tongue scraper ? That seems to really help me.

Can you ask someone close to you if you have bb?
It could be that you are being overly sensitive

Loulou4022 · 26/08/2026 18:02

Do you have someone close to you that you could ask?
Also it could be the coffee, I work with someone who drinks a lot of coffee and has niffy coffee breath.
Also how much water is a lot for you? I have a 950ml bottle and try to chug at least one a day as well as other drinks.

My pockets are 4mm ! When I use interdental sticks there is no smell ! I use cb12 which I believe has chlorhexidine in it and is also supposed to neutralise the smell compounds

It doesn't sound like it's that bad then! There would be odour on the TP brush etc if it was really bad. And 4mm isn't that awful for pockets. Apparently it's 5 or above that you need to worry about.

I had a 10 and a couple of 8s but I got them to shrink by half. I'm still going to a periodontal specialist though in September.

Maybe your breath isn't smelly after all?

geumsun · 26/08/2026 19:14

Not a dentist. This doesn't sound like it's related to your teeth or gums given how rigorous you are with cleaning. I get occasional bad breath, also have peridontal disease, and my bad breath always seems to be related to my stomach and general well being. As soon as I feel healthy and not run down, my breath returns to normal again.

What do you do diet wise? Thanks

Do you have any other health issues OP? Specifically relating to anything to do with your hormones?

I only ask because I have endometriosis and from doing my own research about the disease, it’s very likely that there is a link between endo and gum disease.

I have horrific gum disease despite flossing, brushing and regular deep cleans by the dental hygienist. It really gets me down. But it sounds like you’re doing all that you can.

Do you have tonsil stones? They smell absolutely putrid.

Some people are really sensitive to breath sometimes and that’s something you can’t change, OP. My DH is like this, and the odd time he (in my opinion), was rude pointing out quite bluntly my breath and I got in such a knot about it for so long doing lots like you have been with all this time and focus on the mouth. I take care of course, but he can deal with it and the fact my breath isn’t minty clean on wake up at 5am in the morning (and neither is his). Everyone has bad breath at some stage even with my sub-par sense of smell I have had the odd work colleague waft their lunch breath across me. I ignore it and it doesn’t bug me and there have been some really strong ones too.

Some is worse and medically needs to be treated. Some is bad luck and bad timing (drinking coffee always gives dreadful coffee breath sometimes definitely have a pack of gum on hand).

I would chalk it down to bad timing.

overstimulatedattheairport · 26/08/2026 20:11

Definitely tonsil stones.

If I don't 'clear' my tonsils once per week using cotton buds to get all them out, my breath smells like death.

I don't have gum disease and I am meticulous with oral hygiene but no amount of mouth cleaning helps the smell of tonsil stones once they have been in there for a few days.

You need to use a cotton bud to check the hidden crevices, it takes a while to train the gag reflex to withstand all the probing but it's the only thing that works, so you soon get use to it.

Awwww ! This is so wonderfully worded! Thank you ! I think on the days I am in the office I will try and just drink water and keep my usual high standard of oral hygiene ! Plus as lots have mentioned chexk for tonsil stones and potentially a gastric reason for bad breath x

I have heard about tonsil stones a lot but had no idea you could clear it yourself ! Thanks so much for your advice 🙏

OP my hygienist and dentist say that tepe brushes are much better than interdental sticks for gum disease.

You would ne able to see them yourself. Just look in the mirror with a torch for white/yellow clumps on your tonsils (in the "pits" or under the flaps). They are easy to spot and they really do smell!
