AIBU to question Reform's plan to prioritise married couples for social housing?

Reform have proposed to prioritise social housing for various groups : 'Rules would be changed to reserve at least half of all social homes in England for British-born workers aged under 35, with prioritisation also given to married couples, veterans, victims of domestic violence and care leavers.'

I agree with DV victims, those with children, care leavers : veterans are also at high risk of homelessness. But why prioritise married couples over single people? I'm not convinced that's fair. I assume it's to encourage marriage which is a good aim but I'm not convinced if this is the right decision.

You gave the rent amount. You've proved that housing is not free by telling us it's £100 a week.

A social housing flat in the south east Well if his flat gets up to the temps that mine does he will have paid for it in pure sweat this summer as well as the £100

Ok it may as well be free at that point though. If you lived where I live you’d know what an extreme bargain that is. This man is in his fifties he spent most of his adulthood taking drugs and drinking he’s barely worked his whole life. Now he has his own little place for less than 100 a week which is paid by UC. Can also tell you’ve never private rented or had a mortgage or you’d know how easy you have it.
Hard working young families bust their balls every month to pay their private rent or mortgage just to see on facebook council tenants swapping their super cheap homes like Pokémon cards and demanding the council fix the hole their son punched in the wall.

Gosh yes because owned homes are forced to have black cladding window restrictors and a front door thats a fire door with no gaps so no ventilation And someone also turned up at yours with no notice and felled a tree that was providing shading because they couldnt be bothered to come back and trim branches once in a blue moon

Hate to break it to you but yeah people renting flats privately can have that too. While paying a lot more money. I have no idea why council tenants think they’re the only ones that get mould and other property issues.

Im not against fire proofing but turning a place into a sweat box is bad for health It was 41c in here.

We dont think we are the only ones Labour thought private renters were the only ones though. The petition during the 2015 election about these matters only included private renters

This isn’t a unique thing to council homes. My mother and the man I mentioned earlier don’t have this and they rent socially in fact their homes were cooler than mine this summer. Mainly due to the way they faced the sun.
And there are private renters and owners who have what you mentioned in their block of flats.

As they should, private renters typically have less disposable income than council dwellers because their rents higher. That means less money for sorting things out themselves little things like buying tumble dryers instead of hanging clothes everywhere which causes damp. Etc

I only ever see council people bitching they have it harder than everyone else and acting like all owners and private renters are rich. Instead of appreciating their cheap rent if it’s that bad come live privately without having us subsidise your rent

But single people need to live somewhere and are better suited to one beds than families of 2+ people.
