2 Bottles of Salt! Why?

Ordered a little grocery delivery via an app. I wasn't feeling well and needed a few bits. Opened the bag to find completely the wrong order. There clearly was a mix up where I got someone else's shop, and they got mine. So I was able to get a full refund thankfully, and was told to keep the wrong shop.

Went through the free shop, there were pretty typical items, not what I wanted, but can use:

• 4l of semi skimmed milk
• loaf of seeded bread (nice bread)
• 2 packs of sliced chicken
• 3 packets of fridge raiders
• 3 packets of mini chocolate oranges
• 2 large packs of anchor spreadable butter?
• 2 large bottles of salt????

I'm sure whoever got my shop is equally disappointed about the wraps, mayonnaise, egg custard tarts and 2 cartons of cranberry juice I ordered.

I consider the delivery shops to be a sort of emergency top up interim type shop. What kind of emergency requires 2 packs of butter and 2 bottles of salt? 1 pack of butter, sure, 1 bottle of salt, ok? But 2? It's the salt that really puzzles me. Why so much salt? What do you get in an emergency mini shop?

Anyway I'm going to try fridge raiders for the first time in years, I seem to recall they are as dry as old socks.

Best before? How odd. It's a mineral. It would never occur to me that it could have a best before date.

Very true. I've trotted this out many times, but long ago I ordered a tub of pistachio nuts from Tesco and they sent me a packet of Rich Tea finger biscuits instead. I could only assume either the packer or the person programming the software had thought 'nuts - ginger nuts - popular biscuit - send the most neutral popular biscuit possible as a substitute'.

I spent a lot of my early married life travelling on ships in hot climates with little or no airconditioning. On the cargo ships we were allowed to open the portholes but not on the oil tankers and most of us sweated fountains, even those who, like me didn't work but were there because we were married to officers. Salt tablets were in dishes on the tables at every meal. Pickling?

I think it tends to be the packaging rather than the contents which deteriorates. That is why bottled water has a use by.

When it came it had an expired best before date on packaging.

I don't think salt needs a use by date/best before in UK - as like you say it's a mineral and nothing nasty going to grow in salt - but what we got had one.

Some of the products on amazon labled old indian salt seems to be a company name rather than out of dated salt and I've ordered those as well - DH insisted it was same thing but I ordered from different site in bulk and it came with a past due date. As I was using if for the drive didn't bother me so didn't look further into it.

I put salt in my dishwasher.

Maybe its due to the potential decomposition of the packaging. Bottled water has a use by date.

I would buy two packs of butter if it’s on offer or if I’m baking. The salt could have been one for the buyer and one for their mum/neighbour/friend/aunty’s parrot. Who knows?😆

I’m disabled. I use delivery for regular shopping. It’s a lifeline, especially if you need specialty supplies.

Two bottles of salt: brining, a craft, making salt scrubs. depending on size and type, we keep one in the kitchen and one on the table.

But it's not a drum. A drum is the same width all the way up. You wouldn't call a container that shape with water in a drum, because it's a bottle.

This is what we do with it. So much cheaper and just as effective.

I thought they might be making herb butter and herb salt, but you definitely wouldn't do it with the nasty cheapy stuff I don't think!

I always have two packs of butter in my shop - they will last me a month.
As for the salt, I keep a large container of standard table salt in case slugs make their way indoors.
And I wouldn't buy skimmed milk to save my life - the devil's liquid. Full fat all the way for me!

I have been known to buy fancy sea salt and some table salt at the same time. That must have seemed quite a salty order.
