2 Bottles of Salt! Why?

Ordered a little grocery delivery via an app. I wasn't feeling well and needed a few bits. Opened the bag to find completely the wrong order. There clearly was a mix up where I got someone else's shop, and they got mine. So I was able to get a full refund thankfully, and was told to keep the wrong shop.

Went through the free shop, there were pretty typical items, not what I wanted, but can use:

• 4l of semi skimmed milk
• loaf of seeded bread (nice bread)
• 2 packs of sliced chicken
• 3 packets of fridge raiders
• 3 packets of mini chocolate oranges
• 2 large packs of anchor spreadable butter?
• 2 large bottles of salt????

I'm sure whoever got my shop is equally disappointed about the wraps, mayonnaise, egg custard tarts and 2 cartons of cranberry juice I ordered.

I consider the delivery shops to be a sort of emergency top up interim type shop. What kind of emergency requires 2 packs of butter and 2 bottles of salt? 1 pack of butter, sure, 1 bottle of salt, ok? But 2? It's the salt that really puzzles me. Why so much salt? What do you get in an emergency mini shop?

Anyway I'm going to try fridge raiders for the first time in years, I seem to recall they are as dry as old socks.

Although it may have not been that person’s entire shop and just a rogue bag or two.

Bottle of salt, I envisage this so sort of get the ‘bottle’ thing.

I buy several of the 1kg bags, use when dyeing clothes and sprinkle on drive/patio as weedkiller because we get a lot of hedgehogs and I don't want to put down chemicals.

Personally I used sea salt in a grinder, so I shall have to find some slugs/snow/evil spirits to use this on.

Dying fabric, salt dough, insect management

I would call that a bottle of salt

Bottled salt is the cheap stuff. It's very fine and easy to pour for when you need to use cupfuls of it. I buy several bottles at a time and use it for fabric dyeing and salt dough. I usually use nicer salt for pickling but I get through a fair bit so if I've run out of the good stuff I'd pickle with it too. It is also handy for ice on the doorsteps if you don't have grit. And it pours out nicely for circles of protection.

I don’t understand? Do you not use salt? At all. Because if you use salt just put it in the cupboard!
It lasts months! If not years!

Might have been BOGOF on the salt and butter? Or they mis-clicked whilst ordering, it's easily done!
Round here, we are in the middle of argicultural show season - pretty much every village has one - so if I'd seen that shop I would have thought "Ahh, they're planning a load of baking for the show and entering some salt dough creations in the craft competition". 😂

Pickling/preserving/fermenting.

I ferment vegetables which uses a lot of salt. I also make smoked chicken, duck, salmon and other meats which also uses a lot of salt for the curing.

Oh I see. I've never bought one of those.

I buy this bottle too at 75p. Tesco only sell the £1.90 Saxa bottle.

I don’t think there will ever be a BOGOF on own brand table salt.

I think they have three kids coming over for a play date , hence the sandwich stuff and snacks. They are also making slushies hence the salt.

To put a thick layer in bottom of food recycling bin - it deters flies

I think the OP means a Deliveroo type small order that arrives alost immediately - not a full supermarket shop that gets delivered, both are perfectly valid and the order she received was clearly not the latter!

That’s what occurred to me but I really hope that isn’t the case, it’s an agonising way for them to die.

Making dill pickles?

I went through an incredible amount of salt last year to make 4 jars!

Salt for the bins I’d bet. Butter for cupcakes, one for the mix, one for the icing I imagine.

I quite often add non-perishable items that I will use eventually to my online shop to make it up to the minimum delivery amount. Admittedly I'd usually use something more expensive.

Making sauerkraut? Fabric dying? Loads of reasons for salt. We wouldn't buy fake spreadable butter, but we go through at least two pats of butter a week with cooking and on toast.

I used to use it to put in the caravan over winter to draw the moisture out of the air. Could be someone with a caravan/motororhome etc getting ready for overwintering. Or maybe crafting or preserving as others have said.

With 2 huge bottles, I think it's been bought for a specific purpose, rather than just to use as seasoning or general cooking.

Yes i was going to say that the only time ive used that sort of delivery was when there was a really good offer on (e.g. £8 off a £25 basket) so added random stuff that wasnt excessively marked up that I knew I would use at some point to get to the total amount. Its more likely they were doing something similar rather than a salt related emergency!

It is useful for cleaning though if youre struggling to use it, e.g. I use it to get stubborn tea stains off mugs rather than bleaching them.

I use that sort of salt in the bath. Much cheaper than special bath salts and does exactly the same job!
