Meta glasses at the school gate

Minephotographercat · 24/08/2026 07:06

I know several Dads at our primary school own, and are big advocates of the meta glasses that can record people without them realising.

WIBU to email the school (without naming names) with my concerns that our children might be being recorded at the school gate?

Meta literally already created it and embedded the 'Name Tag' tech into the glasses. They had to delete it due to the outcry. But it exists! We need to keep up the public resistance and revulsion as far as these glasses go, like what happened to the Google Glasses that users were shamed out of wearing a few years ago, or all the dystopian nightmares about this kind of tech will come true.

They haven't deleted it. They've chosen not to activate it yet but could do so at any point. https://www.wired.com/story/meta-smart-glasses-face-recognition-nametag-connections/

Alternatively some bright hacker may simply identify the feature switch in the meta app and activate it - it's possibly be done already.

Meta Silently Added Face-Recognition Code for Its Smart Glasses to Millions of Phones

Code reviewed by WIRED uncovered an unreleased face-recognition system embedded in Meta’s smart glasses platform. It’s designed to identify people via biometric data stored on users’ phones.

So is the visually impaired dad at the school gates - bearing in mind they may not use a cane - a creep?
No, he isnt.

OP has not said anything about any of the dads being visually impaired.

Stop making things up.

You misunderstand me. Multiple posters on this thread have stated that these glasses are only used by perverts, creeps, to cheat on exams - and are wanting them banned at school gates. Im simply pointing out, as a number of other posters have, that it isnt all creeps. Banning them at school gates could mean the difference between a visually impaired adult being able to fetch their child from school, and not.

You'd hope that exceptions could be made where they're being used as a genuine assistance tool/medical device. Just like how our school road is shut to traffic but those with a blue badge can use it.

Ask them if they are wearing pervert glasses in front of everyone.

Yanbu. It's giving pedophile vibes.

I don’t blame you for being concerned and I would mention it to the school, although in all likelihood there’s not much they can do.
However, if you have seen these glasses in person, it’s very obvious when they are filming - a light continuously flashes. Way more obvious than a phone recording which would be easy to conceal.

sadly, not all glasses have this function, and there is no legal requirement (yet) for them to do so.

General purpose facial recognition technology is banned in the EU and UK, and rightly so. Meta will never create a general purpose facial recognition tech for their products.

no its not, and meta have already developed the next generation glasses which have this capability

They can literally be your everyday prescription glasses or sunglasses, so of course someone who owns them might wear them everywhere. If I’d spent several hundred pounds on a pair of glasses that I could use every day, I’d be wearing them too. It’s quite a leap to see someone wearing them at the school gate and assume they’re there to record children.

Why does anyone need their glasses to record everything they see every day.

Why?

GlosGirl82 · 24/08/2026 12:15

100% email the school - this is a proper risk. Why would a man want to secretly record children other than for a bad reason…

Eeyorefan · 24/08/2026 12:18

bananaobama · 24/08/2026 08:12

Why would anyone want meta glasses?

surely weirdos only?

They are used by blind people to assist in day to day life e.g. being able to tell them who they are looking at/ speaking to once set up

Why?

I think you don’t understand how they work.

They don’t record everything you see just because you’re wearing them. The camera has to be activated to take a photo or video. They’re primarily smart glasses that happen to have a camera, not a body camera that’s permanently filming everything the wearer looks at.

I think a lot of the concern here is based on a misunderstanding of how they actually work

PringlesAre4Life · 24/08/2026 12:42

Meta glasses are not only available to the legally blind.
There’s a blind mum at my children’s school, if she’s doing to the school run, she collects her child from the school office. Schools are very happy to make reasonable adjustments like this. This new technology is not vital, nor does every blind person have it and I think this argument is a bit of a red herring

I understand perfectly. You are suggesting they are just like normal glasses and therefore people need to use them. I am asking why anyone needs glasses that records their interactions? (even if that requires pressing a recording button- my point still stands)

Noone NEEDS prescription glasses like this

You could say that about any disability aid though? And yes, I know Meta glasses aren't only used by the visually impaired. But to say you know someone who doesn't have them is irrelevant. I know a few deaf people. Some use hearing aids. Others have cochlear implants. You could argue that neither of those are "vital" and yet I've seen what a difference they've made to people's lives.

I think there definitely needs to be rules around the use of cameras. But they do have a benefit to some people.

It would be lovely if this was how they were being used. But actually these are a luxury item, a very expensive piece of technology, and not designed as a medical aid for blind people. They can be helpful to any visually impaired people who can afford them. But they are far more widely being used by rich people who either like to have new gadgets and are completely oblivious to how these glasses are perceived, or by creeps and perverts who are willing to spend their money on being able to indulge their nasty voyeuristic filthy little habits.

FunnyOrca · 24/08/2026 12:58

I see absolutely no use for these glasses that isn’t borderline criminal.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 24/08/2026 13:50

I started a thread about these glasses last week. I had a whole bunch of people saying how good they are for visually impaired people (that doesn’t make me comfortable walking around) and how they’re not breaking the law, and how anyone can record anything anywhere and in the end I unfollowed it.

They’re weirdo glasses for mainly weird creepy people.

There is an app you can have that lets you know when you’re in the vicinity of them but I don’t know exactly how it works as I’ve not used it yet.

You are very very definitely not being unreasonable to object to them.

Probably going to unfollow this now as there will be lots of ‘oh but this, but that’. Fuck off and take your fucking ‘but this, but that’ with you.

NeverLookInTheMirror · 24/08/2026 13:54

While I can see some of the concerns over the metta glasses and also the positives, the only thing which has really happened here is that the glasses have emphasised the amount of time people spend filming in public.

Nothing’s really changed in that regard. It’s just the method has, and now people are calling for the glasses in particular to be banned when in actual fact maybe what people need to be calling for is for filming in public to be banned.

Which is all very well, but if you’re looking for filming in public to be banned, how do we justify the fact that there is CCTV literally everywhere.. So if it’s wrong for individuals to film, then it’s wrong for CCTV to exist.

In terms of those saying that the glasses could literally mean the difference between someone with a visual impairment being able to collect their child from school and not, that’s frankly bullshit.

While some people with a VI do benefit from the functions of the glasses, there is nothing the glasses do which your phone doesn’t. In fact there are numerous apps on the phone which aren’t on the metta glasses.

And given they’ve only been around for about two years or so, are we suggesting that people with a visual impairment have gained a new lease of independence in the past two years all down to metta? As someone with a visual impairment I can tell you that’s not the case. Moreover, I seemed to manage to collect my child from school 20 years ago before any of this tech even existed.

I’ve seen loads of people wearing them - the majority of which are men of a certain age.

They are literally advertised with this demographic in mind.

Just because you’ve not seen it, doesn’t make it not true.

I get that but should students be allowed them in school exams just because 1 person is visually impaired - surely there has to be some sort of rules.

We don’t allow taking videos or pictures in swimming pools and changing rooms - most of which are just parents who have no malicious intent.
As a parent I understand why I can’t take photos at a swimming pool.

All of these dads are obviously not visually impaired and perhaps there needs to be an exception for those that are.
But even if there’s not, I would assume they want to keep their DC safe and be more than happy to remove their meta glasses at the school in order for others to do the same.

It’s a shame there aren’t prescription ones because I don’t think anyone even needs to wear them.

Rondayvu · 24/08/2026 14:12

Anyone who buys or wears meta glasses I would be very very wary of so yes I would inform the school.
