Am I unreasonable to be upset by my neighbour's outside toilet noise?

I’m wondering if I’m being unreasonable about this because it’s starting to make me feel really uncomfortable in my own home it been a happening for years but last couple weeks got so much worse.

My neighbour has an outside toilet in his garden which is very close to our house as we both had passageway yards he also has a toilet upstairs in his house which I’ll mention again later.
He seems to use the outside toilet constantly throughout the day, sometimes literally every hour. The problem is that the toilet door is often left open while he’s using it, so we can hear everything.

He will be in there from as early as 6:30/7am making very loud noises, burping, farting, spitting/coughing etc anll throughout the day we once counted 27 times in a day of him making what I can only guess is belching noises? It’s like a very loud and deep “OI” we are guessing it’s a type of belch but who knows you hear him doing it all day and he seems to spend a lot of time out there with the door open to 💩 . It’s particularly bad first thing in the morning and has woke me up all this week I’ve had off work.

I’m finding the noise really unpleasant and sometimes they make me feel physically sick especially now I’m pregnant. I know he is obviously entitled to use his own toilet, but surely leaving the door open and making very loud bodily noises when it’s right next to neighbouring houses isn’t particularly considerate? I sat in the bath last night relaxing to his farts.. he does have a toilet upstairs and once in a conversation with him he mentioned how he sleeps in the living room as he can’t make it up the stairs (he’s late 60s) but I’ve often seen his upstairs lights come on so don’t believe this to be fully true.

It’s getting to the point where I dread hearing him go out there because I know what’s coming!
Would this bother you or am I being unreasonable? And is there anything I can actually do about it if it continues?

Embarrasing though it may be, I think the only solution is to actually speak to him and ask him to shut the toilet door when in use.
It won't stop the belching etc....but at least it won't be as loud, and once he is aware, he may try to control the volume.

My aunt and uncle had an outdoor toilet in their last house, as well as an indoor one. I remember being bemused when I heard them using it! I think perhaps ask him to please shut the door every time. Or install a fountain to mask his noise?!

I used to hate dgps outisde toilet, why would someone want to use t when you can be in a private indoor one aside mobility issues

I have this with a neighbour at back of me.

He spits and hacks in the sink a lot and it makes me feel sick.

He must be a smoker or have a medical issue and obviously he has every right to do these things in his own bathroom and I cannot do anything about it. But its so loud and often. It really turns my stomach, especially early morning If I'm having a cup or tea and breakfast outside.

I couldn’t cope with this, if telling him politely and directly doesn’t work, go nuclear. Record his noises then play it on a loop at max volume on a speaker pointed at his back door until he complains. When he does, say this is what you are inflicting on us, close your fucking door Gary. Or work out how to hack Alexa so it plays mr hanky the Christmas poo every time he farts. I’m a cunt though.

I have an outside toilet which I use most days. However I can promise there is no burping, belching, minimal ladylike farting only! 😁.

I shut the door and hopefully the neighbours can’t hear. Possibly if they are in their outside loo at the same time they would as they back onto each other.

If hes happy to call you about your bathroom light call him about this!! He obviously doesnt give a fuck about awkward exchanges the other way around!

are you OK - we can hear you are struggling with diarrhoea, flatulence, choking and gagging in the toilet all day long -
we have been concerned about you …
would that work as a prompt to keep the racket down ???

He could just shut the door if he was a normal person. He actively wants you to view him.

My next door neighbour’s grandson (only in his 20s) constantly does this vile, hoicking up phlegm noise, plus gobbing and spitting. It’s absolutely disgusting. He does it in the garden, going into and out of the house and when I’m in my garden, I’ve even heard him do it from inside the house. He does it in front of his whole family and no one says anything to him, which amazes me. I have a son the same age and there is no way I would EVER tolerate that behaviour.

I had a neighbour just like this. I think the bad reflux and endless burping was part of ageing. It was so loud and horrible! He didn’t live for many years after this. Not much of a consolation.

I don’t think you can do anything. At least autumn is coming so your windows will be shut.

Lots of homes in the UK still have outside toilets. They’re not used as often as they used to be but they still exist and can be really convenient if you’re gardening or whatever and don’t want to traipse muck through the house or faff about taking your shoes on and off.

I really feel for you but I also really feel for him, because of the indignities of old age. I would speak to him, but kindly. If he has bladder and bowel issues as well as mobility issues, that's pretty miserable for him, and he doesn't need to be humiliated, as some PP have suggested. Hopefully he can reduce the volume. He can definitely shut the door.

I think some men don’t know or care how to use a toilet considerately. Despite years of living in flats where you can hear other people’s bathrooms, I have never, ever heard noises like this coming from a woman.

What? How’s that possible, you’ve never heard a woman fart belch or cough?

A lot of older houses still have the original outside loos, along with indoor modern bathrooms.

Best to shut the door though 😳
