Asking on behalf of DD who is expecting. What are in your view the worst girl and boy names. for me they are the made up ones like Nevaeh and Jayden

DH mum did that. For him and his brother.
V short names - you couldn't shorten...

Aurora, Thea, Orla, Evelyn, Willow, Frankie, Summer and Winter.

Arlo, Freddie, Ezra, Vinnie, Teddy, Reggie, Archie, Albie, Alfie, Ronnie

I really don’t like Archie or Stanley, or any cutesy short forms of what were old men’s names - except for Freddie. I quite like Freddie.

Girls’ names, I dislike anything with ‘youneek’ spelling, and anything of the Lili-Mae variety.
I’m often thankful that my DM gave us all classic names that don’t date.

I am delighted with them all.

Nicknamey names as full names - Teddy, Alfie, Elsie etc
Last names as first names - Carter, Cooper, Parker etc
Boy names on girls - James, Morgan, Riley etc
Made up sounding names - Jayden, Nevaeh, Brayden etc
Dull sounding names - Jack, Ben, Will, Ava, Emily etc

A friend of mine from a while back wanted to call her daughter Treblinka.
It took me a while to find the words to explain where the problem lay.

I think i dislike it when people with a mainstream white british heritage (ie not a cultural difference behind it) deliberately misspell long established names eg

"Jaxon/Jaxxon" instead of Jackson - this is derived from Jack's son, there's a reason for the traditional spelling.
"Rubi" instead of Ruby - clearly ruby is a precious stone.
"Jazzmyn" vs Jasmine
"Dalyla" instead of Delilah

To me it just gives vibes of not caring about spelling/having a low regard for education... especial when the adjusted spelling is copied from a tv character.

My friend spent £35k on IVF then called the poor child Jayden. I think Jay is nice though. I wonder why?

I also loathe all the Cooper, Walker etc surname type names.

I'm really hoping she had relatives that were murdered there and wanted to use it as some sort of bizarre tribute. Still absolutely shocking, but the least horrific alternative that I can see, unless she actually thought she'd invented the word!

Someone I know gave her husband a list of her preferred names and told him to think of the worst nickname someone could make out of them. From Jazmine he came up with Jizz-Minge and I’ve never felt the same way about the name since 😆

Icarus !??? That is unfortunate. Do they keep telling him to wear sunblock and stay indoors ? Plus no air travel…

The worst two that I have come across in my family tree are probably Horace and Gertrude.
The influencer Aubree Jones's kids have tacky names eg Trendy and Disney.

The only names I have heard that I really dislike are ones that belonged to horrible people, who have then put me off the name full stop. Obviously there are lots of names I would not have chosen for my dc, but in terms of knowing someone with a name, I like the name if I like the person, so the actual name is irrelevant.
Eg names like Julie are unpopular now, but I’ve known a lot of lovely Julies.
I went to school with Penelope, Monique, Andrea, Susanna, Nicola, Deborah, Laura, Helena, Philippa, Jane etc. All classic and sound lovely but underused at the moment.

I saw that. Not sure I believed the poster though. I was believing it til she willingly shared the names. Who would do that? I had a feeling it may have been someone deliberately taking the piss out of someone else's children or grandchildren's names.

I know someone who has 2 sons with 1 syllable names, eg Luke and Max. Relatives and neighbours etc call them Lukey and Maximillian, or Lukeyboy and Maxwell. Names on their birth certificates are Luke and Max.

More annoying that the names being shortenened that is, bloody lengthening them...

I also know someone with sons called Adam and Daniel, and they call them Addy and Dangy. (Hard G in Dangy, like G for Great.) Brother is called Stuart, they call him Stewpot. One of their cousins is called Harry - they call him Hazza or Hazzington. Another cousin is called Lily. They call her Lillo. Fucking LILLO!

What the F is wrong with some people?!! The names are easy enough to say. Stop pissing about. If someone mispronounced my name I would ignore them. A supply teacher (when my DC were in early primary) used to shorten my older DC's name, and I politely asked her not to. It really pissed me off. EG, if it was Hannah, she called her Hanz! Fuck off! Her name is Hannah. It's literally 2 syllables!

Anything overly pretentious and trying to sound upper class. Just choose names like Elizabeth/ Rose, Henry, Ernest.
Names like Jayden, Brayden etc . Also Riley, Tyler type names.
Girls anything double barreled. With Jo, Mae , Rae etc at the end.

I think a 40+man called Barry (or, even worse, Barrie) would be odd unless he's over 60.

I hate Neville, Victor, Vincent, Bernard, Ernest.

They all sound thoroughly dependable chaps who wear Harris tweed jackets with leather elbow patches, but still awful names.
