AIBU to feel guilty my child watched TV all afternoon?

So I feel a tad guilty today. Kids were going to their dads (not much money). We have been out quite a bit at play centres and things. I have played a bit of football with my 7 year old and things but my 9 year old pretty much watched tv until her dad came at 16:00. Feel like the worst mum ever but she didn’t want to do anything.

Sounds fine to me

Capybarass · 21/08/2026 20:58

I don’t know, for some reason I have in my head they might turn into a square eyed zombie but I really can’t afford to do something everyday. I have been pushing them all day to go outside and play swing ball etc but not interested.

Fine for a day a week or similar in the holidays IMO. Not absolutely every day. But I let my kids watch films all afternoon one day last week

Silverbirchleaf · 21/08/2026 20:59

That’s fine. A tv ‘duvet day’ is fine once every so often.

Capybarass · 21/08/2026 21:00

I think going out has become somewhat overkill as when I ask them what they would like to do they same “home day” 908% of the time.

Say not same

Well if you generally view it as going out to a paid activity or tv then YABU.

We do go for walks a lot and the park too.

What are they into inside the home that isn’t TV? As long as they also do other things I don’t think a TV day every so often is a problem.

SweatySpider321 · 21/08/2026 21:04

Nothing wrong with a relaxing day. I think it’s something everyone needs -both adult and child. Honestly don’t beat yourself up

Capybarass · 21/08/2026 21:06

My daughter has
really missed her dad and hasn’t seen him for 2
weeks so she just wanted to sit and wait for him! All bloody day!!!! Is dad here yet.

Totally understand the guilty feeling but don't be feeling bad! Every child and family is different and we should give ourselves grace. Days at home over the holidays are LOOOONG with kids and it isn't realistic to be going out and about every day.
My son has plenty of screentime(I find it impossible to get anything done otherwise as he can't seem to play alone) and also TV is the only thing that gets him to rest!

Some things that I find he enjoys doing are baking with me and helping with jobs. Sometimes even just engaging in an activity with your child for 10 minutes gets them started and then they will continue by themselves.

We have to cut down on the mom guilt!

Selfseedpoppies · 21/08/2026 21:07

It won't do any harm occasionally but there's loads of stuff they can do without having to always go out. At that age mine would've been drawing, crafting, baking, reading, playing board/card games, building a den etc.

tomatoplants · 21/08/2026 21:08

It’s fine OP!! Don’t overthink it. Kids need crash out time as much as adults do.

Not sure how to vote

Whether YABU to do this (YANBU)

Or

Whether YABU to feel guilty (YABU)

EarringsandLipstick · 21/08/2026 21:30

All this angst! You know you do plenty out of the house, one day indulging in TV is fine! You’re doing fine too OP.

Brightbluesomething · 21/08/2026 21:41

Mine slept until 3pm the other day, then scrolled on the socials until teatime. She’s older but thankfully still alive when we didn’t go out and do a MN approved activity each and every day.
Give yourself a break. It’s fine.

whippersnapper55 · 21/08/2026 22:17

Honestly it's nothing to feel guilty about! One afternoon watching tv is not going to do her any harm. I've had a busy week and today I've caught up on Corrie and Eastenders and watched an episode of Love You to Death on All4. I don't feel guilty at all! Kids need their downtime just like adults do.

Ohhhthedrama · 21/08/2026 22:28

Is this serious? What's wrong with watching TV. Me & my kids can happily spend a whole weekend just chilling and watching tv. It's one of my favorite things to do.

loggerlikesweet261 · 21/08/2026 22:29

My kid has basically watched tv all summer lol

AllIneedAreMyFamilyandDogs · 21/08/2026 22:57

It was one afternoon. Everyone needs some down time and rest sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it.

NotAnotherScarf · 21/08/2026 23:06

I'm a child of the 70s...we watched TV all the time. If it was raining, if no one else was about. It was on continually.

Thing is its great for everyone to just do absolutely nothing once in a while

Floppyearedlab · 21/08/2026 23:09

Fine as a one off
Just don’t make a habit of it

Realworld10 · 21/08/2026 23:11

You clearly value the importance of going outside and activities, which I was brought up to do, same for our DC. You have provided a lot so it's absolutely ok to have downtime at home, something I've accepted with the same mindset as you.

Our DC have had UK holidays, days out, getting together with others etc but inbetween days at home, watching you tube, gaming and chatting online with friends. Sadly quite a few of their friends have only been at home gaming, no days out, no holidays, no playing in the garden even.

It's totally fine to have these 'slob' days, chill out, stay in PJs, because this has become a norm we're not used to but I've accepted it as ok as its only occasionally. As said before, it's become a norm sadly for the real lazy parenting so to to justify we only do this now and then is not a problem. Xx

ToKittyornottoKitty · 21/08/2026 23:12

It’s obviously fine to have an occasional afternoon of tv. Kids need and like downtime and if that involves some tv it’s fine
