AIBU to worry my son has too little to open?

my DS is 6 on Monday and I have just had to fix my car which cost me a fortune. I feel like I haven’t bought him enough. I have bought him a full sized football net, football boots, trainers a new football and an iPad. I just think he won’t be happy as it isn’t much to open.

6 year olds don’t need iPads. Hope your humble brag made you feel better about yourself though x

A woman up the street from me, got her 7 year old a gardening set mini wheelbarrow, watering can tools seeds etc the whole show, even a mini fence he could make plots with.
Then she and her patner put a fence in the back garden right at the back with a gate on it.
And thats his part of the garden to do what he wants in.
The way they did it is brilliant, and he loves it, no matter the weather he`s outside in his garden.
It was a light bulb moment when his nan said she had got him a rain coat and a pair of wellies for his birthday.
And the fact he loved digging and planting.

He`s now ask for a watering butt to catch rain water in for xmas.

You've failed him..you must buy more much more.
A private shopping session in Hanley's and to pick what he wants.

What does a six year old do with an iPad, out of interest?

Play crappy games, watch crappy videos, ruin their attention span, decrease their socialising abilities, lose their imagination and ability to play.

I call a rage bait / brag. OP will know very well that the majority of people spend less than what they’ve listed on a 6-year-olds birthday.

If I was getting my 6 year old an iPad for his birthday that would be all he’d be getting. My son would appreciate how much that cost and would be happy with that.

I would give the iPad and put the rest away for Christmas or vice versa.

You can give lots of things to open without the items being expensive if that’s important to you - stationary, sweets, board games, books, clothes they might need…

First I was saving to pay for my dc schooling, then I paid alone for it for years, so from first birthday there was one gift, wrapped - maybe two. But I think that even if I did have spare money on top, I would have stuck to one or two presents. You are spoiling him, don't do it!

What is considered "enough gifts"? And why is X amount of gifts considered more "enough" than Y amount of gifts? Surely, it's not about the amount of gifts but the quality of them? It's better to give 1-3 things a person really wants and needs than 10 things they won't be bothered about, and will probably end up in the trash.

This has got to be rage bait. OP in the kindest way you need to give your head a wobble. He is 6! Any of those gifts individually would be a nice gift for a child……you cant honestly think this is too little. If anything he is being massively spoilt.

My kids birthdays they just get one item from me& DH, a small jokey thinh from sibling.

Eg it might be:

• me & DH: roller skates
• sibling: teeshirt with silly cat on it

Return the ipad. The football stuff is a fantastic set of gifts for a 6 year old.

I think some people are being a bit mean here.
I would count a football goal + football boots + a football pretty much as one gift because they are designed to be used together. I wouldn't class that as "loads of stuff".
All it takes is for the weather to be crap on his birthday and he can't do anything with his gift on his actual birthday.
That's why having some little extras is nice for a 6 year old to have. They don't need to be expensive.

From whom?? My DH and I can easily afford that but there’s no way we would buy that for a six year old!! The footie stuff plus a book and a big tub of choccies - sorted. Leave the ipad until he’s older.

I agree with this. I would get more bits and bobs, like novelty socks, pens, top ups of craft supplies, bath toys, make-your-own whatevers, etc. They always get at least one book and one clothing item, and some silly birthday bits like a crown or a badge etc.

An iPad at 6?? Blimey OP. That would have set you back a few £££?? Save the iPad for Christmas. Or take it back, get a refund and buy age appropriate gifts?
