Was I wrong to buy the chairs without husband?

I have 3 lovely garden chairs which were originally a set of 4 but one broke a couple of years ago.
We also had 2 other chairs which we have out but aren’t as nice and don’t recline both ends.
We are a family of 5 and everyone likes to sit on the nice chairs so it’s first come first serve and the children are miffed if they get one of the other chairs.
I saw a set of two of the nice chairs we like in the sale and bought them with some cash I had for my birthday in a card from my parents.
I thought why not have all nice chairs which match as we now have 5 and there are 5 of us.

My husband is really cross that I bought these chairs, saying we didn’t need them, we had 5 chairs, it was a waste of money and I shouldn’t have got them.

Usually we do buy things as a couple but I particularly wanted these chairs as I don’t like being on the other chairs and felt it was my birthday money and I didn’t see I should run it past him.

AIBU to think I could buy garden chairs in the sale without it leading to an argument, it was his passive aggressive approach where he didn’t outright say anything but said to my daughter I don’t know why mum bought more chairs when we didn’t need them and it was stupid etc, knowing I could hear him.
It has taken the shine of the new chairs and I wish I hadn’t bought them but I thought it would be nice and while I don’t expect us to agree on everything, it feels like his opinion is always right and mine is always wrong.

How expensive were these fancy chairs that he thinks they were a waste of money and you think you should’ve consulted him about spending your own money? Is he usually a grumpy git?

Not fancy chairs at all just basic zero gravity recliners in the clearance for £40 the pair but the other two chairs we have are the rigid patio chairs from a table and chair set so are not really very comfortable.

Let him sit on the grass if it bothers him that much, what a tosser, telling you how to spend YOUR birthday money. I would have laughed when he said that and said "Yeah right, I know you're joking but it is my birthday money" Makes him look a bigger twat to say " But I wasn't"
You and the kids enjoy your chairs OP.

lazyarse123 · 21/08/2026 16:58

I'd just reply that I bought what I wanted with my money so he can just fuck off and mind his own business.

BendingSpoons · 21/08/2026 17:00

If your parents had gifted you the chairs directly, would he have complained? You can use your birthday money as you wish!

WonderfulSmith · 21/08/2026 17:02

£40 the pair? Bargain, no wonder you snapped them up. He can sit on one of the old chairs then.

No financial worries, he is more of the view we had 5 chairs so didn’t need any more, he’s more than happy to get a couple of beach chairs out when his parent come to visit but what he’s not more than happy to do is to sit in one himself or in one of the other chairs because he wants to sit in a comfy one so always sits in one of those and that will be the one best positioned for the sun or the parasol if he wants shade so basically he didn’t need any more chairs because he always makes sure he has a nice chair even if that means asking one of the children to budge over and let him sit there.
Having nice chairs for other people to enjoy as well is a waste of money.

What a selfish arsehole he is, OP. He's also disrespectful to/about you in front of your children and has trained you so that you have to check with others whether he's being unreasonable or not...I think all of this is worthy of a bigger discussion than what you spend your £80 birthday money on. (It should go without saying but no, you were not wrong to buy the chairs without asking your husband's permission.) Nip that shit about bad mouthing you to the children in the bud. He's training them to have no respect for you and think it's acceptable for partners to call each other stupid and dismiss each other's needs.

Nousernameideaaga · 21/08/2026 17:07

Life is so short

Far too short to spend worrying about this OP

Pour yourself a glass of wine and go sit on your lovely chairs ☺️

Nesbi · 21/08/2026 17:08

Why does he feel he gets any say whatsoever over how you spend your own birthday money?

Twat.

LakieLady · 21/08/2026 17:13

OhamIreally · 21/08/2026 15:56

Bring back the old chairs and tell him he’s not allowed on your new ones as they are your birthday present.

Sorry. Childish but I’d be tempted…

I was going to suggest telling him not to sit on them, too!

He's got a fucking cheek telling you what you should and shouldn't do with your own money, OP.

TishHope · 21/08/2026 17:13

Got to say, I agree with PP, your DH is a dick, OP.

Comtesse · 21/08/2026 17:15

Stillreadingalot · 21/08/2026 15:59

I did something similar once. DH doesn't see the point in expensive champagne so my dad sent me some money for my birthday and I bought a bottle of Moet (I think) and drank it all myself. 😀

Ha you were very reasonable as was OP. Prosecco is so blah and not very like proper champagne at all so there!

Justmadesourkraut · 21/08/2026 17:18

£40 the pair?? Where did you see them op? I need a new recliner. 2 would be even better.

Happy Birthday 🎈

nomorekitchenislandsplease · 21/08/2026 17:23

Your birthday present from your mum. Nothing to do with him. Mean git.

Totally agree.

I'm shocked you had to ask @grapejuices .

This can't be the only controlling behaviour from him?

Bluetray · 21/08/2026 17:27

Bloody hell OP, he sounds awful.
Very controlling.
You are not allowed to spend your own birthday money?

That is financial abuse.
Awful for your children to be around.
I bet it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Financial controlling behaviour is domestic abuse.

He is also belittling you to your children.
That is emotional abuse of them.
Look into it.
You deserve better, your children definitely do.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/08/2026 16:05

Tell him to think himself lucky because you were thinking of spending the money on male escorts and cocaine and decided on the chairs instead.

He's a prick.

😂😂😂

Myfridgeiscool · 21/08/2026 17:35

It’s most definitely his turn to sit on a shit chair in the full sun, selfish bastard.
What an absolute prick.

Stormyrose · 21/08/2026 17:36

Wow how selfish is he and it’s not even his money

Stormyrose · 21/08/2026 17:39

Hang on, they were 20 quid each and there is no financial issues,? That’s the sort of thing you buy from the household budget, I thought you’d spent hundreds.

Very reasonable, agreed! Cheapskate, bossy AND self important, he sounds loooovely.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 21/08/2026 17:49

Uuuggghhĥh strangle the fucker with the chair and patio him. Then you have an extra chair and you can think of him every time you have your morning coffee outside.

Or if that doesn't appeal to you just tell him to fuck off.

So he’s a selfish bastard who has the attitude of so long as he has a comfy chair no one else matters. Keep your chairs and dump your DH along with the crap chairs he’s a tight miserable arsehole.

Trivialpursuits · 21/08/2026 17:51

His arse would never be on one of MY chairs.

TonTonMacoute · 21/08/2026 17:53

Jeez, he sounds like a real catch! You can spend your birthday money on whatever you like.

Like PPs I would also be tempted to ban him from sitting in one of 'your' chairs - for life!

Lucyccfc68 · 21/08/2026 17:54

Tell him to piss off and mind his own business. He can sit on the grass from now on.

Does he usually behave like such a tosser?
