AIBU to wonder why people serve drinks too hot to drink?

Just seen someone with horrible burns from a drink on Instagram. This has got me thinking along with seeing a baby at a baby group get a small burn from a hot drink and someone leaving a very hot drink in a non safe place near my small child recently. Why do people not just add some cold water to hot drinks. What is the point of making a drink that's too hot to drink? Why not add a bit of cold water (after it has brewed/steeped etc), rather that handing people drinks that need to cool for sometime to be drinkable. It would hopefully prevent quite a lot of injuries.
Of course leave a tea to stew safely on a kitchen bench or put in a thermos for later if going out.

I think the posters who have commented along the lines of parental responsibilty have it right tbh.
I'm a child of the 70s; when I think of how we were brought up and yet still came through alive it amazes me that the welfare of our kids and indeed ourselves seems to be reliant on everyone else but not ourselves ..

I agree completely op. I know some people like their drinks super hot but i don't understand how they drink them without burning their mouths? I never buy tea to takeaway in coffee shops because it is served so hot I just end up carrying around a burning hot cup for about an hour until I can actually drink it

It’s the ritual of having it boiling hot and waiting. It tastes awful lukewarm.

You sound like my spiritual twin…

I find the obsession with hot drinks totally bizarre - especially in hot weather.

I don’t drink any hot drinks so only buy milk when I’m expecting guests, I didn’t even think of buying any over summer because I thought people would want cold drinks.

You would think I’d denied them oxygen with the moaning I had to put up with.
My friend got in her car and drove to the shop and back instead of just having a cold drink of which I had a big selection. It was 28 degrees outside and she’s moaning about the heat whilst slurping a boiling hot drink and raising her body temperature - it doesn’t make sense does it?

I also have misophonia and hate the teaspoon clattering with intense stirring, the drawn out process of making the “perfect drink” and taking sips then modifying it and then the inevitable “ahhh” sound people make that is followed by slurping.
If the drink is too hot then I agree those gaspy little sips are rage inducing.

I didn’t realise tea, coffee and milk brands were so controversial and get told I need to buy different ones for different people and I used to get grief over not having china cups or a teapot.
I’m not a fucking teashop!

The phrase “a lovely cup of tea” sets my rage off and the way people grind to a halt because they can’t start or last the day without several cups.
I used to work with drug addicts who weren’t as preoccupied with scoring a fix 😂.
I used to also work with a lot of men who would neck several coffees then need a poo so the toilet needed a revolving door of rapidly waddling men who would then spend 15 minutes in there. I used to have to make sure I had a wee at home before work after once making the mistake of not going to the toilet in a rush and having to walk into the fetid stench of several men defecating which was a bit much first thing in the morning!

I know this is my issue though and I grit my teeth and say nothing but it does annoy me when I’m expected to provide hot drinks but no one really seems to think about people who don’t like them and act like I’m admitting something shameful!

Lots of places provide tea and coffee but it’s rare I get offered anything but water.
I also think it’s unfair people expect me to join in with the endless rounds of drinks making then complain that it doesn’t taste right or if I refuse.
The smell of tea makes me gag so I don’t want to be standing over it for 5 minutes so I just say no now.

I apologise for the long rant but it really does wind me up and if I show any annoyance I get accused of being completely unreasonable 😆.

Finally a sane person in a world of Mrs Doyles!

I secretly love it when the drinks machine is broken at work and the staff room doesn't stink of coffee. Bonus, that it's quieter without the regular whirling and churning sounds.

I sometimes drink peppermint/ fruit teas (just a more interesting form of water) and it's really annoying in a cafe when the drink is undrinkable until long after the food is eaten. What's the bloody point of that? Confused

I figure they have a kettle for a reaon so I boil the kettle and make the drink it tastes awful to make a hot drink with less hot water

DirtyBird · Yesterday 21:31

My DD only likes her hot drinks dragon breathing hot (she's the same with food). I prefer mine on the cooler side so I don't burn my tongue. I think food establishments have to make them very hot because I've heard people complain about them being "cold".

Yes I don't understand how anyone drinks tea or coffee that hot, without scalding themselves. I suspect some leave it to stew for longer than they realise or haven't mentioned that. Maybe some have vast amounts of saliva which cools it! Or perhaps their nerves have down regulated in some way so they just don't feel it.

To the scalding hot preference people: I certainly don't have my tea luke warm, just not scolding hot and have never suggested steeping in luke warm water. I probably put about 10% cold water in my husband's tea after if has brewed, so it is still hot, but drinkable (and would do far less damage to a child or adult if there was an accident). I do not believe for a moment that the vast majority of these people who drink super hot tea/coffee would be able to tell the difference if a bit of cold water was added after it was brewed and done as a blind tasting.

I agree people shouldn't leave scalding hot drinks around children. Thankfully I spotted the risk before anything happened and moved it. They were guest in my house and had make the drink themselves and placed it near my child who is five- it hadn't crossed their mind and they had no intention of drinking it soon, as it was far to hot for them.

I only like my tea and coffee very hot. If I’m getting a coffee out I ask for it extra hot. I can’t stand lukewarm drinks and I say that as someone who accidentally knocked a fresh cup of black tea over my arm when I was about 5/6 and had to go to the hospital for the burns it caused. I’ve also stood on a saucer that was placed on the floor and spilt black coffee over my foot that one didn’t cause as bad a burn but it ruined my mini mouse socks.
if there’s kids around then I make sure it’s not in their reach but I cannot stomach a lukewarm drink. Same with soups, or sauce based meals.

XenoBitch · Yesterday 23:02

I like my tea/coffee very hot. I like to nurse mine for ages instead of gulping it down.
Hot drinks around kids is a totally separate issue.

I can't find the Instagram post I saw of this girl which in part triggered this story, but this is an article about the incident.

I remember hearing about cases in America where someone sued for injuries from a boiling drink from a fast food place and it was joked about. I later learned she had horrific burns to her genitals.

This post rather got taken over by " no one has the right to stop me having a scalding drink" crowd.

I only like hot drinks very hot too. I send them back in a cafe if they are not hot enough. It means I sip them rather than drinking it all in one. I understand this increases risk of cancer. I will try to cut down.

Franxi · Yesterday 23:10

I only drink about 2/3 of a cup of tea as then it’s too cold for my liking. I only like a splash of milk, so someone putting cold water in my tea would pretty much render it undrinkable. Coffee, I like a much smaller cup, more of an espresso, so it needs to be drunk straight away or it’s too tepid. I’m quite capable drinking hot drinks and don’t do it in a car or any other moving vehicle, or over children, so I’m probably not the target audience here.

TallagallaPenguin · Yesterday 23:38

I prefer hot drinks so I can drink it over the course of 10-15 mins rather than right away. It will cool down naturally rather than needing to add cold water. I can sip it a little if it’s hot - obviously people aren’t “pouring scalding water” down their throats and burning themselves on purpose 🙄

If I’m around small children I will take extra care to make sure my hot drinks are well out of their reach. I used a lidded cup for ages when mine were little, as well as keeping it well out of the way. I wouldn’t sit and have a hot drink while holding a baby for instance. It’s perfectly possible to be careful about all these things. If it’s hard to keep a hot drink safe I’ll have a cold one. I drank way too much bad tepid tea when kids were little - not because I had it that way for safety reasons but because they regularly kept me so busy I couldn’t get to my hot drink in time. If it had started out tepid it would have been even worse.

If it’s a food establishment because then they’d get people complaing that the drinks are too cold!! If it’s in a home then parents responsibility to put it somewhere safe or use lidded cups

Edited

Agreed. I worked in a cafe and almost every customer whinged their coffee wasn't hot enough

I surprised at so many people liking scalding hot drinks. Just a word of warning that there are links to cancer of the esophagus with repeated very hot drinks.

Oh get lost. Normal people like their hot drinks hot, ffs!

Probably your cafe should have made the drinks hotter then.

We were trained to make milk based coffees 140 degrees F... If the milk is steamed to boiling point it burns but thats what customers seemed to want

I’m the opposite. I HATE it when I buy a coffee and they serve it to me lukewarm. Yuk!

Hot drinks are usually sipped slowly, not downed. If it’s not hot when you get it, then it’s likely to be stone cold after a couple of mouthfuls.

mondaytosunday · Today 01:19

Nope I want my drinks boiling hot thanks. But then I’ve never burned my kids or placed them within reach.

I totally agree, those poor people such painful burns I used to work in a Uni student cafe, and we weren't allowed to put the lid on takeaway cups in case it hadn't been done properly, and the lid came off and scalded them.
I always put cold water in my tea anyway, can't wait 20 minutes for it to cool down.
My husband likes his tea boiling hot, don't know how he drinks it.

Don't be ridiculous! A cup of tea left for 20 minutes would be cold.

Most people like a hot drink, and it really doesn't take long to cool down - I went out for a coffee this morning and it was very hot. I certainly wasn't sitting around for 20 minutes before I could drink it. I find if I get distracted then a hot drink is soon no longer hot.

So is red meat, and alcohol and lack of exercise and salted foods, and charred foods 🤷

And just about every other thing you can mention!

I want my drink serviced but, can’t stand things being served lukewarm.
Why people would put hot drinks near kids is another question?!?

Pret is a culprit for doing this … I always ask for it extra hot in there!

DH likes his drinks hot - then slurps them loudly as obviously you can’t take a proper mouthful or it burns your mouth.
