To wish my DD's Girls Grammar School did not admit boys to the Sixth Form

My DD1 has just collected her GCSE's from her school which is an Essex girls Grammar with high standards. DD1 has done very well and 'likes' single sex teaching (if she wanted to learn with boys she would got to the Boys Grammar for Sixth Form). However, like most Grammar Schools whether Boys or Girls they are Co -Ed or in my DD's School partially with around 30 Boys in both Year 12 and 13. I know this seems to be the fashion that Girls Schools which really should be single sex all through are admitting boys these days into year 12. I guess it is probably due to funding though personally I would prefer single sex availability for girls with the Boys Grammars offering the Co=Ed experience if wanted.

My DD'S school used to do that, until the boys caused absolute murder between the younger girls.
@PringlesAre4Life I'd rather a bit of rowdiness between the football lads, than drinking each other's piss/seman like the rugby lot do.

Is it SHSG? If so ds joined them and bloody loved it. They want to keep high standards so the lads who attend have really great grades. He rewarded them with really great A-level grades. He came from Tommy's and was a bit of an oik though. But he is still really good friends with loads of the girls and in my opinion it was good for both sides to see a different side of life.

nearlyemptynes · Today 11:08

Well in terms of preparing her for the world and life in general surely coed sixth form will be better? You really do need to toughen yourself if not her up. Boys are actually ok you know.

all of my dcs went to single sex senior schools that took the opposite sex in the 6th form. one of them changed school to be the minority sex in the new school because of the courses that were offered. I and they saw it very much as a transition from single to mixed. they did form friendships with the opposite sex and they also saw the benefit of getting a different perspective on some of the social issues. Its a well documented/studied fact that girls do better in single sex schools whereas boys do better in mixed situations. But even for my girls I think it was incredibly positive as it taught them coping strategies around things like sexist comments or unwanted attention. not that this was a huge issue but they were going to come across it as uni and being in this sort of situation where the boys were in the minority does help. Its also worth noting that there are some courses out there at uni, like particularly ancient history where over 90% of the cohort will be girls and other subjects which will be male heavy. Personally I think both you and your daughter should see the positives in this. Yes its a change but overall I think as she gets older she will see that it was a benefit.

I feel like this is de-railing the thread but as the old saying goes, Rugby is a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen, and football is a gentleman’s game played by hooligans. I’ve always found it to be generally pretty accurate!!
Edited to add: Drinking each others piss or cum is certainly not in the culture of rugby. I think this might need its own thread. 😂

I agree girls schools arent really the place for a handful of boys.

However.. I do think schools combining Sixth Forms offers greater choice to their pupils and is beneficial. A lot of schools struggle to run the less popular courses.

Its not that I am particularly worried about the social aspect, I just wish the opportunity to continue in a Single Sex educational environment was an option. DD1 has many male friends though Hockey and outside interests and does not necessary need or want them in a classroom environment. I also appreciate that funding is probably the greatest driver in the direction of either full Co Ed or partially CO ED Sixth Forms. Though, girls are better for boys than the other way round..

What do you actually mean by that in real terms "worried about the social aspect"?

Nofeckingway · Today 12:53

Surely at the level , boy or girl , will be teenagers who are invested in their education. Don't really understand your concerns .

Ethelrogers · Today 12:56

I wish my DDs all girls grammar did this.

I didn’t particularly want her going to a single sex school, but it’s the only grammar school within an hour.

redange · Today 13:32

I am not concerned I just would like the more traditional idea of Girls Grammar Schools being just that and Boys Grammars being the de- facto choice for co-ed education at 6th form. I wonder if some girls schools have allowed boys to enter at sixth form stop what a little drift towards girls leaving for the boys school. The girls schools should have enough faith in what they have to other not to have to compete. If a girl wants a co-ed education then let them go to one offering that.

The two Essex Grammars offering single sex girls sixth form are Chelmsford and Colchester so that 'leaves' my two girls Grammar as either WHSG or SHSG ! Both actually still require Girls in 6th form to wear 'proper' uniform and are similar in numbers of boys admitted.

Girls schools should have faith in what they are offering and not compete by offering the chance to study with a 'boyfriend' to ensure they keep the brightest pupils.

As a boy who went to a boy's grammar with a mixed sixth form. The mixing was great for me. Finally worked on my nerves with girls. Became friends. Made a few laugh. And developed a very big crush.

Rocketpants50 · Today 13:46

What is it you are concerned about though? What impact is this going to have on your DD? There are about 400 students in WHSG in 6th form and a bit less in SHSG - the boys who go are there on merit and are there to study specific subjects. You only need to look at results to see how hard these boys are working to achieve. My DD said initially a small amount of the girls got all giggly and silly around the boys - like they had never come across one before but that soon disappeared. Try and work out what your concerns are, what your daughter's concerns are then go and talk to the school which I am sure can help you with all your worries.

MissyB1 · Today 13:52

OP I’m confused as to what the issue is? You’ve said you’re not concerned, but then what are you not happy about? You don't seem very sure of that yourself!

ShettyLamb · Today 13:58

I have to ask from the DDs perspective are the girls are they or are they not harassed and bullied by these boys.

Next stop, the nunnery.

Or Cambridge.

BitOutOfPractice · Today 14:05

My dd1 went to a boys school for A levels. I suspect it’s the same pair of schools your dd goes to.

it was fantastic for her. She loved it. She did spectacularly well.

There will probably be very few boys in the girls 6th form. It’ll be fine. All of the Essex grammars are exceptionally good.

It most certainly is in the culture of rugby! I think you’re very naive! And im curious to know why rugby fans / players are always so so eager to deride football. I have come across it (most often in business settings) so many times now it bores me rigid. I’ve heard that “old saying” so many times. Zzzz. I often just say the words “stamping” “gouging” and “institutional cheating when it trotted out yet again.

ReflectiveGilet · Today 14:24

I feel the same - Plymouth grammar. Dd1 isn’t bothered about it but I wish it was still just girls.

socks1107 · Today 14:27

My daughter joined a boys school for sixth form having been at a mixed school. She thrived, she was one of only three girls and the boys she met five years in are her best friends and one still her boyfriend. The boys loved having the mix and it did them all good in my opinion

MandemChickenShop · Today 14:29

go private or shrug it off. she might get a boyfriend!

ApplebyArrows · Today 15:00

I would agree with others that by sixth-form the disadvantages of having boys in the classroom have largely dropped off. (The boys are generally better behaved by that age and the most problematic ones don't generally get into quality sixth-forms.) I have also seen first-hand the naive behaviour of young women who didn't spend much time with boys at school - it's probably better for girls to get used to boys earlier, I think.

Ozgirl76 · Today 15:07

Might be a good opportunity for her to get over the fear of having boys around. This will be the last time in her life that she has that, and being able to remain confident and robust with the opposite sex will do her good.
Probably having been segregated for so long she has an idea of what scary big boys can be like, and this will show her how silly that is, boys are perfectly nice in the main (just as there are some unpleasant girls

pistachioicecream · Today 15:13

We're obviously in the minority, but I agree with you OP and would be disappointed too.
