To ask why SHEIN clothes have increased in price?

sodoffbeforemycupofcoff · 20/08/2026 06:43

The whole point of shein is cheaper clothes with poorer quality. If we’re honest?
I have gd a browse this morning at their woman’s winter clothes section and I have noticed the prices have massively increased. Why would that be?

From where though? So many mid-range brands are selling £60 jumpers that are 100% polyester. Places that i used to think of as "high end" (i.e. too expensive for me) are selling rubbish that is no better than Shein now.

Whenever I have shelled out for expensive clothing I have regretted it, as nothing seems to last any more. I buy everything on vinted now, but they also have their problems.

Consumers are not to blame for the fact that all retailers are selling is shit, in a variety of colours.

Consumers are to blame..they are the ones who have driven the price of clothing down. its not happened over night its happened over the past 2 years people want new new all time. they waited for sales or discounts etc retailers saw this and started putting pressure on manufactures moved them over seas as it was cheaper started substituting for cheaper materials all to drive price down to feed consumer demand. that's why sizing is so shite its not one manufacture doing smae clothing all tendered out to who can do it cheapest
there are other options out there you just need to look for them do your research on manufacturing materials etc. I suggest andrea chong a good start she on insta and tik tok. then apply what learned when shopping both on store and second hand. shops are not going not going to change untill consumers do. there are government laws coming into play which is helping but untill consumers stop it won't happen

A lot of people patting themselves on the back for looking down on people using Shein when most of their clothing or phones would have involved slave labour at some point.

Some of us can't afford morals when it comes to clothes, people are struggling to feed their families and live their lives. It would be a lot harder to earn money if you didn't have clothing suitable for work.

Nah, you can!

Second hand, hand me downs or just buy less. Stop making excuses to justify the poor working conditions of other people, including children.

And again…how? I am not a dressmaker. I abhorred textiles at school and refused to learn how to sew. I do not know how. It might be ok if you know someone who can. I don’t and I don’t have a sewing machine or a sewing box or anything like that.

I would stop letting other People making you feel guilty. You are sourcing items for a specific purpose. The problem is when people who could afford to buy more ethical clothing still buy from Shein because they can get A lot more items they don’t actually need. I wouldn’t buy from Shein myself, but I hate the holier than you pile-ons you get on these threads.

White plantation owners probably justified have slaves for the same (ridiculous) reasons.
There is always a better option than Shein.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 20/08/2026 22:22

Everything they sell is made from and transported using oil. Which is both running out and currently subject to massive supply problems thanks to the USA.
Try shopping more locally.

The average shopper on Shein is spending hundreds a month. On cheap stuff which won’t last and is designed to be disposable. https://www.businessinsider.com/shein-average-shopper-spends-100-month-womens-clothing-2023-6

All the supermarkets have clothing sales on at the moment, there are bargains out there. DD bought herself a swimsuit in Matalan for £6. And as Matlan is a uk company, she knows it’s not been made by slave labour or with chemicals. Yes some of the big brands have been caught in the past using suppliers paying sweatshop wages or similar, but they sign up to schemes to try to make sure this doesn’t happen. Shein doesn’t care.

Meet Shein's typical shopper: The fast-fashion retailer attracts older and more environmentally conscious consumers than you might think

The average Shein shopper is a nearly 35-year-old woman who spends $100 per month on clothing, 60% more than the average US woman, a UBS report found.

Shein are losing money due to import charges. I guess they’re trying to claw some back.

Your family, so presumably you have children.

How do you square off being a parent whist knowingly supporting a company that use enforced child labour?

Please explain, because I really can't get my head around that. That is some grade-A denial.

We all make compromises. I have very few clothes. A lot of them from vinted.
1 in 4 pieces of cotton in the UK will have been involved in slave labour camps, the materials in your phone will have been mined by slaves, most clothing companies aren't paying fair wages to their workers even Beyonces clothing brand was involved with slave labour. If you eat imported foods then it's likely somewhere along the line slave labour/unfair pay or dangerous working conditions were involved somewhere.
Nobody is perfect in what we do, I recycle as much as I can, eat seasonally and local, don't drive or fly so I'm doing my best to make sure there is a world for as long as possible. Not everyone can or will do that, they compromise their morals where they want.

MidnightMeltdown · 20/08/2026 23:49

Good. Hopefully it will stop people buying mountains of shite to wear once and dump into landfill.

OpenGoose · Yesterday 00:43

Wearing shein clothes is so gross, they're full of chemicals and nasty stuff and they're made by a country that keeps uyghurs in prison camps and harvests their organs. There was recently asbestos found in kids toys made in China too. Buy better quality made in the EU clothing and buy less of it, they have the REACH regulation so you're exposed to less contaminants and pollutants in their fabric.

Couldn't help myself 😂
Although to be honest I think shein clothes would probably melt under an iron.

They surprisingly don’t! Although I feel I have been quite silly for not knowing they’re made of plastic?!

Polyester, acrylic, spandex, elastane, nylon = plastic.

Great news, prices rise and hopefully the UK high street starts to recover. Decent shops, good choice and jobs, including Saturday jobs for young people.

We have also lost a sense of community, few of us ‘go shopping’ anymore. Loved doing this with my mum or with friends.

Loads of benefits in SHEIN, TEMU and the masses of awful Chinese ‘scam’ companies who poorly copy designer clothing and sell via fake AI photos.

It didn't take long for the self-righteous Shein-hating brigade to turn up!

Where do you buy your clothes from?

I don't think it's self righteous at all. Just being aware of something unpleasant and wanting to make others aware of it is not self righteous. Caring for people's work conditions and the impact on our planet (yes, yours as well by the way!) Is not self righteous. I buy stuff in charity shops and sometimes in regular, more upmarket shops when they have sales. I really do not need poor quality clothes which will end up in landfill in a couple of years.

Ah yes, those people who have empathy. Just awful aren’t we. It’s not being ‘self righteous’, it’s just not supporting sweat shops and inhuman working conditions. But if being rude to those people makes you feel better about your cheap top then go for it.

AuntieBiotics · Yesterday 08:42

Reviving the high street ti some extent - because it will never be what it was - needs a huge attitude shift. We need more people to value clothing and to discard this idea that you can only wear things for one season and that anything you bought in 2025 or before is now unwearable. Or that cheap = best. Or that we all deserve to have a wardrobe full to bursting with stuff. Buy as good as you can afford and keep it, repair it until it is literally falling to bits, then replace. And step away from the "hauls" and the mountains of stuff bought for every "occasion" through the year.

This shows one of the fundamental misunderstandings here about how things like Shein and Temu work.

Yes, they often sell things that are identical or very similar to brand names.

This is either because they're made in the same place or because Shein / Temu are ripping off the design. The latter has happened to me and many other independent Etsy sellers too, it's not just big name brands.

The key difference here is that brand names like Zara are subject to UK / EU safety standards on their imports. They won't be using cheaper dyes which burn your skin. They won't be using toxic chemicals (there is a surprising amount of lead in clothes from Shein / Temu). They won't be using fabrics which are dangerously flammable.

https://chemtrust.org/news/report_finds_hazardous_chemicals_in_shein_clothing_above_eu_limits/

There is no good reason to shop at Shein / Temu. The cheap price only means you're paying with your health and your personal data. And your morals, depending on where you stand on slavery and ripping others off.

This x 1000. You can’t claim to support all the things our civilisation has worked towards (labour rights, environmental and safety standards) and then buy things from Shein.

Just buy less but support companies who manage their supply chain and aren’t involved in slavery.

People like to shit on Zara but they are pushing forward the development and use of post-consumer recycled textiles, organic cotton and European fabrics, which is at least something.

And even if you don’t give two hoots about the environment or workers elsewhere, companies like Zara are job creators in OUR country - they have invested in retail sites that bring people to our high streets and employ people in their shops - something that Shein doesn’t do.

AuntieBiotics · Yesterday 08:47

Well exactly, people love to moan about how there are no jobs especially for young people. Most of my generation had our first saturday jobs in shops. Plus you know that if you buy something from Zara it's been tested for safety, is not made with dangerous chemicals and isn't going to go up in flames.

hiintrepidheroes · Yesterday 08:49

TheFishFish · 20/08/2026 12:39

If you can't judge the fuck out of someone knowingly buying products produced by forced child labour, then who can you judge, exactly?

I mean, that's a pretty low fucking bar of morality, isn't it.

100% this. This and people who ignore the unethical working conditions just so they can have a sunny holiday in Dubai.

Pollyanna87 · Yesterday 09:07

The popularity of Shein demonstrates why slavery stayed legal until so shockingly late. People of all classes just want their stuff cheap.
