To ask why SHEIN clothes have increased in price?

sodoffbeforemycupofcoff · 20/08/2026 06:43

The whole point of shein is cheaper clothes with poorer quality. If we’re honest?
I have gd a browse this morning at their woman’s winter clothes section and I have noticed the prices have massively increased. Why would that be?

It didn't take long for the self-righteous Shein-hating brigade to turn up!

Where do you buy your clothes from?

I like to buy clothes from companies which aren't happy that slave labour and sweat shops are producing their products for them.

While I despise Shein Temu etc for so many reasons I don’t think it’s realistic that people can always just make their own clothes. The time to learn the skills, cost to source and buy kit and materials is going to be prohibitive for most people

Who is saying that?

Nearly everything second hand. Charity shops or VInted.

I agree that the quality of the major brands is hit and miss these days, but in no world is Zara quality as bad as Shein. It just isn't.

I ordered some stuff from Shein a few years ago before I realised just how dreadful it is (I had thought it was essentially an online Primark). Their clothes literally feel like plastic films. Shit fabrics, terrible cuts, full of static, and some items absolutely stank.

There were a few cotton items that were passable (though the cuts were bad) but everything else was just dreadful. And that's before you even get into the serious ethical issues, slave labour, etc.

Unnecessarily mean and judgmental.
Get back to your ironing.

Rightfully judgmental. Not unnecessary at all. People using Shein and TEMU should be judged harshly and called out for being complicit in modern slavery and environment catastrophe. This is not a radical stance, it is simply ethical.

That was aimed at the person who is looking for costumes for a production - it is very normal for clothes to be made for plays etc
No one is saying that for every day clothes, they are saying that there is plenty of options out there for clothes without having to resort to the crap shein temu etc produce.

RelaxAndDetox · 20/08/2026 11:03

Transport costs

Maybe, though I doubt it, they are paying the children and adults employed in sweat shops a few pennies more per hour

ToffeePennie · 20/08/2026 08:47

What are the alternatives please?
I have a production coming up, I need a dirndl, a couple of false hair pieces, a wrap around white cloak, some flower hair pieces and a bunch of accessories. I have priced them up on shein and Temu at just under £30 for the lot, but if there is an alternative that is just a cheap, I would love to know. (I scoured vinted for the black funeral dress and my 1930s church dress so I have already secured them)

Do you really have to ask?! Charity shops, Facebook Marketplace, Vinted. Use old sheets or curtains. Borrow things. There are videos available online showing how you can make these things.

Edited

I read a post about someone who had to replace her SHEIN bought holiday clothes abroad, as they were unbearable in the heat. So sweaty! 😆

Must have been like a tube of sausage meat… all that plastic.😂

If you can't judge the fuck out of someone knowingly buying products produced by forced child labour, then who can you judge, exactly?

I mean, that's a pretty low fucking bar of morality, isn't it.

AuntieBiotics · 20/08/2026 12:41

It;s a very, very low bar. But people are prepared to turn a blind eye to all sorts of things because they want cheap shit. And lots of it.

LifeBeginsToday · 20/08/2026 13:05

People need to stop shopping, me included. The tables have turned and we are now much more aware of the damage we are doing to the planet. Clothes should be expensive. They should be bought with consideration and with the mindset that they will last.

The actual point of shein is to use slave labour to flog fast fashion that then gets discarded and clutters up the planet isn’t it?

Good. Nobody should be buying from Shein, BooHoo, Temu etc and nobody needs the huge amount of disposable clothing people buy. Such companies are horrific on so many levels

Much less, better quality clothes that aren’t made out of plastic are what we should all be buying.

It’s cheaper to buy one clothing item that lasts years than a continual diet of plastic crap that ends up in landfill.

From where though? So many mid-range brands are selling £60 jumpers that are 100% polyester. Places that i used to think of as "high end" (i.e. too expensive for me) are selling rubbish that is no better than Shein now.

Whenever I have shelled out for expensive clothing I have regretted it, as nothing seems to last any more. I buy everything on vinted now, but they also have their problems.

Consumers are not to blame for the fact that all retailers are selling is shit, in a variety of colours.

Activelife · 20/08/2026 18:51

Agree. The mindset of needing new "bits" for every holiday, every night out, every weekend away has to stop.

Dibdibbob · 20/08/2026 19:18

DoAWheelie · 20/08/2026 06:51

New marketplaces always start of with low prices to get people used to using them and killing off the competition, then they start to raise the prices.

I agree with this. I’ve not actually used them but DD does all the time and the stuff she gets is pretty decent quality.

I’ve so far resisted….and apologies for going off topic……it annoys me that I keep seeing Shein ads for clothes that I love the look of then I go to M&S, Next (I’m short and overweight so can’t do Zara etc and with a limited budget) and the clothes are either awful or not in my size.

Genuine question - why do Shein appear to have such nice clothes even though the quality might not be great when it arrives???

AuntieBiotics · 20/08/2026 21:14
