AIBU to think our jungle retreat was the most magical place I can imagine

Hi everyone

Recently I posted about going to a jungle retreat in Malaysia as I was feeling quite apprehensive. A few people said I should do an update when I get back, and we flew back last night so here it is :-)

KL was lovely and we enjoyed the sights, especially the Batu Caves and the Jalan Alor food market after dark, and in our accommodation we loved the 51st floor infinity pool, which was quite something.

But the jungle retreat, which we did after KL, was out of this world. I promise I'm not connected to them in any way and don't work on commission haha. I won't reveal the name unless someone specifically asks me. The place was so beautiful - Garden of Eden springs to mind - being situated inside the jungle was so special, incredible vegetation and such proximity to animals: about fifty monkeys who came by every day, the great Hornbills (a type of large colourful bird), a beautiful green viper which lived in a tree by the pool house, other birds, bats, squirrels, geckoes. Insects wise - which was my biggest worry - there were just lots of visible ants, we got bitten (very) few times by mossies when we became complacent about mosquito repellent otherwise they are no bother. In the evenings we chilled in the Pool House (open air) without any visible insects, despite the light.

Our accommodation was really spacious, lovely, rustic, very comfortable, not luxury in a standard sense but just so aesthetically pleasing and lovely, and we felt at home. And so, so safe. Too many memorable moments to go into but for me personally it was really special to swim in the infinity pool after dinner and watch the darkness descend on the jungle.

We were the only four people in a retreat that can host 16, so we were really spoiled, being looked after by a team of five staff. I've never experienced such attentive and warm service, even in 5* hotels. Our retreat host was a wonderful man I'd be honoured to call a friend.

The food was out of this world, I ate three times a day (I'm normally always on a diet) and didn't put on a gram, which is unheard of for me, normally I come back half a stone heavier. There was just so much fresh fish and seafood every day, a real feast for every meal but all so fresh and healthy.

There isn't a single bad thing I can say about it. DP and my DC (teenagers) also loved every moment of it. Even when we saw a giant spider on the outside of the netting covering our windows (trying to get into the master bedroom, haha), I didn't freak out (and my DP kindly scared it off). I'm not a big nature person but felt so blessed and grateful to be a part of this wonderous natural environment. It's made me look at wildlife in a new way. Us humans normally just bulldoze through nature, this place found a way to create something inside nature that's completely integrated and respectful of the nature's other inhabitants.

The only bad thing is that on the penultimate day I developed an ear infection, it's something I'm prone to, so on the last day I went to a clinic on the island and was prescribed various medications. The doctor appointment and all meds were 95 Ringgits, or less than £20!!!

Just to fulfil the usual format of this thread, here are the options (don't worry if you don't want to bother - this is really just an update for some other posters who had stayed in jungle retreats and wanted to hear how this one was):

Reasonable: it's clear why this was a (very surprising!) holiday of a lifetime
Unreasonable: jungle and bugs are scary and I'm crazy for having (unexpectedly) loved this place so much

Just for information we had the most magical time on safari at Sebetana Elephant Lodge in South Africa last year, booked with Newmarket Holidays through Hays travel, it was just amazing. There is a Sebetana Lodge fb page and everyone is saying they have a fabulous time

Thank you, this sounds interesting and I'll check it out!

Aah, I lived in Malaysia for 5 years and I knew it would be Tiger Rock from your description. How wonderful!

Amazing!! I'm so glad you've heard of it. They've had the same team running it for almost 30 years and they really know what a retreat like that needs.

Looks amazing. Do you mind saying how long and cost for family of four. Am looking for what to decide for next year’s summer vacation. We loved Thailand and would like to experience south east Asia again.

We didn't go for that long actually - 3 nights in KL, and 7 nights in the jungle retreat. Total cost just over £8k.

It sounds a lot, but perhaps isn't that much when you consider that just parking at Heathrow was almost £250, or that our transport from KL to Pangkor and back was almost £300 (we needed a big car with a driver, because we had a lot of luggage and DP - although usually happy to drive anywhere around Europe - thought it was better to leave it to professionals this time). Also a big part of £8k was the air fares, even things like having to pay for seats on the plane (that really bugs me!) add up in the end.

The scuba diving is even better than the jungle if you get a chance.

Borneo near Sipidan, there is a marine wildlife park with many islands

Huge amount of different sea creatures, turtles, fish, corals, sponges that have been growing for 100s of years.

Out of this world !

I'd be careful with this recommendation as FCO advice is not to travel to these islands, so you would not be covered by your travel insurance.

Yes, I met the owner in Penang and I believe they lived there themselves for quite a few years with their young family (probably 30 years ago). She is an artist and runs a gallery in Penang, amongst other ventures. Tiger Rock sounds a magical place and as though they have a great team looking after it.

I haven't visited, but follow it on social media and hope to visit one day. Malaysia is such a special place and the Malaysian people are wonderful. I loved living in Borneo, by the sea and under the casuarina trees, with hornbills, sea eagles and colourful snakes visiting the garden. Glad you had such an amazing experience.

That's exactly the right person - Rebecca. She's a painter. The whole place is full of her wonderful art. She was the person I liaised with when booking everything initially and she was great, super responsive. Then the last two days that we were there, she and her husband came along, and because there were no other guests just us, we really got to chat to them quite a bit. They were super friendly and helpful. They still live in Penang, which maybe we should have tried to fit into our trip as apparently it's a nice island.

Please do the research to see if tourism is harming these places, as it has been at the, Borneo near Sipidan, wildlife park. Unlike other countries, they aren't protecting the coral. In Thailand, yes they breed turtles, but the wildlife that would once feed off them, as they made their way to the sea, has died back because of a lack of food. It was tourists thinking they've got a right to every beach, that caused the turtles to stop laying eggs. Some of the safaris have stopped animals breeding.
