AIBU to think our jungle retreat was the most magical place I can imagine

Hi everyone

Recently I posted about going to a jungle retreat in Malaysia as I was feeling quite apprehensive. A few people said I should do an update when I get back, and we flew back last night so here it is :-)

KL was lovely and we enjoyed the sights, especially the Batu Caves and the Jalan Alor food market after dark, and in our accommodation we loved the 51st floor infinity pool, which was quite something.

But the jungle retreat, which we did after KL, was out of this world. I promise I'm not connected to them in any way and don't work on commission haha. I won't reveal the name unless someone specifically asks me. The place was so beautiful - Garden of Eden springs to mind - being situated inside the jungle was so special, incredible vegetation and such proximity to animals: about fifty monkeys who came by every day, the great Hornbills (a type of large colourful bird), a beautiful green viper which lived in a tree by the pool house, other birds, bats, squirrels, geckoes. Insects wise - which was my biggest worry - there were just lots of visible ants, we got bitten (very) few times by mossies when we became complacent about mosquito repellent otherwise they are no bother. In the evenings we chilled in the Pool House (open air) without any visible insects, despite the light.

Our accommodation was really spacious, lovely, rustic, very comfortable, not luxury in a standard sense but just so aesthetically pleasing and lovely, and we felt at home. And so, so safe. Too many memorable moments to go into but for me personally it was really special to swim in the infinity pool after dinner and watch the darkness descend on the jungle.

We were the only four people in a retreat that can host 16, so we were really spoiled, being looked after by a team of five staff. I've never experienced such attentive and warm service, even in 5* hotels. Our retreat host was a wonderful man I'd be honoured to call a friend.

The food was out of this world, I ate three times a day (I'm normally always on a diet) and didn't put on a gram, which is unheard of for me, normally I come back half a stone heavier. There was just so much fresh fish and seafood every day, a real feast for every meal but all so fresh and healthy.

There isn't a single bad thing I can say about it. DP and my DC (teenagers) also loved every moment of it. Even when we saw a giant spider on the outside of the netting covering our windows (trying to get into the master bedroom, haha), I didn't freak out (and my DP kindly scared it off). I'm not a big nature person but felt so blessed and grateful to be a part of this wonderous natural environment. It's made me look at wildlife in a new way. Us humans normally just bulldoze through nature, this place found a way to create something inside nature that's completely integrated and respectful of the nature's other inhabitants.

The only bad thing is that on the penultimate day I developed an ear infection, it's something I'm prone to, so on the last day I went to a clinic on the island and was prescribed various medications. The doctor appointment and all meds were 95 Ringgits, or less than £20!!!

Just to fulfil the usual format of this thread, here are the options (don't worry if you don't want to bother - this is really just an update for some other posters who had stayed in jungle retreats and wanted to hear how this one was):

Reasonable: it's clear why this was a (very surprising!) holiday of a lifetime
Unreasonable: jungle and bugs are scary and I'm crazy for having (unexpectedly) loved this place so much

Sounds amazing!

did you need malaria meds to visit here? I would love to go there but reacted badly to them last time.

hunchicklove · 18/08/2026 21:38

Just wow!

yes please share

RobertaFirmino · 18/08/2026 21:39

I'm hoping to visit Borneo myself, to see orangutans and probosci so your adventure sounds absolutely amazing!

Yes share OP - sounds incredible ❤️

Why would it be at all unreasonable? Post this in chat or travel rather than making it seem like a conflict or problem.

sillyrubberduck · 18/08/2026 22:32

Please share the name of the place for both KL and jungle retreat. Looking to go to Malaysia next year.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2026 22:33

It sounds wonderful, I’m so glad you braved it.

I could not have coped with a giant spider 🕷️ though, I would then have thought they were in the house/under the bed/in the bathroom

Carnival26Queen · 18/08/2026 22:55

The scuba diving is even better than the jungle if you get a chance.

Borneo near Sipidan, there is a marine wildlife park with many islands

Huge amount of different sea creatures, turtles, fish, corals, sponges that have been growing for 100s of years.

Out of this world !

MagicAlixk · 18/08/2026 22:57

Wow. This looks incredible ☺️

Tiger Rock on Pangkor Island. As I said, please don't think I'm in any way connected to them i.e. I'm not promoting them for any personal reasons. I heard about the place through a friend who runs writing retreats there and this was our first ever visit.

There's no malaria in that area. We all spoke to our GP and ensured that tetanus jabs were up to date and my kids had Hep A in addition (I had it from a previous travel I did some time ago). That was all that was required. The island has good medical care with things like vacciness and anti venoms, and right across on mainland there's apparently a really good hospital. We felt very safe.

On our way to Batu Caves we met a family from England who were on a 3-week round trip and were going to Borneo for the orangutans. Their trip sounded amazing, you'll have a fantastic time! Post an update when you've done it!

Please share the name of the place for both KL and jungle retreat. Looking to go to Malaysia next year.

In KL we stayed at the Eaton Residencies, the apartment was large, modern and fairly bland but quite high spec all round. The 51st floor swimming pool was what sold it to us, plus it wasn't expensive. The jungle retreat is Tiger Rock. Beware that it's small (8 rooms in total, out of which 2 are in the Main House so would be offered to a family) so you may want to book in advance, last minute there may not be any availability.

It's the sort of place where you have to have some faith, I agree. Because all the buildings are done in a traditional Malaysian style, there are many, many gaps between roof and walls, floor boards etc. In fact, some of the area are actually open to the jungle (e.g. the Library Pavillion). And yet, there are no bugs. It's an eco-resort where they don't believe in harming wildlife in any way, and the host Mohan was telling us he keeps them at bay with a natural mixture of 1 part cooking oil, 1 part white pepper and 10 parts water, which he uses as a spray. It takes a while for it to work - it can be 1-3 months of spraying before the bugs understand they're not welcome :-) but they're not hurt. They are very gentle and have huge respect for nature. Every evening we watched him do a prayer/say thanks to the jungle, where he's lived and worked for 30 years. It's really humbling. He said to us in all that time they have never had a guest be bitten by anything nasty, and he believes it's because they respect nature and nature respects back. It's a lovely philosophy.

Ah, thank you! I've done scuba diving in Australia on the Great Barrier Reef so would love to do it again, but problem is my DP can't swim. Or at least he feels he can't. He's totally fine in the pool and looks normal when he dives under the surface, but the thought of treading water in the deep worries him. I guess he'd be ok for scuba diving as you have oxygen anyway?

Thanks for the update op, after your last thread I’ve been researching similar places (although I think I want windows lol), you really got me thinking!

Not as much traffic in Travel, and I’ll eat my hat if OP genuinely isn’t connected to them in some way

Would you like some ketchup with your hat, in that case? As I'm absolutely not. But it's always good to see how cynical people can be ;-)

Just for information we had the most magical time on safari at Sebetana Elephant Lodge in South Africa last year, booked with Newmarket Holidays through Hays travel, it was just amazing. There is a Sebetana Lodge fb page and everyone is saying they have a fabulous time

southchinasea · 20/08/2026 19:52

Aah, I lived in Malaysia for 5 years and I knew it would be Tiger Rock from your description. How wonderful!

Wordsmithery · 20/08/2026 20:59

I remember replying to your first post as I'd be similarly trepidatious. Glad you had such an amazing time. Nature is truly awesome.

mydogisfat · 20/08/2026 21:33

Looks amazing. Do you mind saying how long and cost for family of four. Am looking for what to decide for next year’s summer vacation. We loved Thailand and would like to experience south east Asia again.
