AIBU to worry about flying on this date?

DP and I are planning a long weekend away. We're off next month, on a Friday.

I left DP to book the flights and said "please don't book if it's a Friday the 13th."

It's just a weird superstition, I'm sure a lot of us have them.

Anyway he went ahead and it wasn't Fri 13th, so they were booked.

I've just looked at the dates and realised we're flying on September the 11th!!!!! On the 25th anniversary of you know what!!!

I feel ridiculous as it's just a funny coincidence but I'm slightly uneasy. We can't change the flights.

Am I being daft?

@mauveranger Friday the 13th is only considered bad luck because the Knights Temple were disbanded, rounded up tortured and burned at the stake on Friday 13th October 1307 so as long as neither you or your husband are temples you will be fine

NigglyPig · 18/08/2026 16:35

I’m also flying that day - transatlantic, scared of flying.
I had booked a different date in premium economy. It was actually cheaper to fly business class on 9/11 than premium on my original date.
Didn’t take me more than about 5 seconds to make the decision to change my flight to 9/11 😂😂

“You know what!”? Seriously? Are you 10?

Molkomad · 18/08/2026 21:20

If it makes you feel any better I'm currently in Turkey after landing in the early hours after a really scary landing on a normal none superstitious day! When coming into land our plane nearly collided with another plane after air traffic control gave permission for two flights coming in to land at the same time. Our plane had to do a sharp manoeuvre when coming into land and basically re- take off mid-air to avoid the other plane. It was horrendous! The pilot came on to tell us what had happened after having to re-circle back and attempt to re-land. The whole plane shook and most of the passengers screamed - I did actually think we were gonners until we finally safely landed. The point I'm trying to make is anything can happen at anytime and not just because you're superstitious about the date etc. You will be fine!

I’m flying on the same day. Didn’t occur to me to worry about. but I also got married on the 13th (only day the venue was available) and still married 2 decades on so I reckon dates don’t matter.

3luckystars · 18/08/2026 21:37

You do know that pilots and air crew that work on the 13th? They can’t just take the day off every time. There are thousands of planes in the sky, every day, all those pilots want to get home to their families. You are safe.

Brookiecookie · 18/08/2026 22:33

I flew on my first holiday with my now husband on 25th September 2001, now that was weird, 2 weeks to the day, no hand luggage, masses of security, but we still went, a day is a day and anything can happen at anytime

Nousernameideaaga · 18/08/2026 22:35

You will be fine OP

You are also allowed to feel how you feel.

GirlMumForever · 18/08/2026 22:37

9/11 was my 16th birthday. I’ve never been remotely superstitious about it. It’s just a date and unlikely to be repeated.

You know you've just told us your age and dob right

Yes you are.

It’s a bit distasteful to reduce the tragic deaths of strangers to a superstition for you. Quite narcissistic honestly.

Agree … almost trying to turn it into a joke!

LlynTegid · 19/08/2026 06:59

Unless you are walking to the airport, the greatest danger by far is the road journey to it.

Just think how many people you have known who have been injured or died in car crashes, and then if you know of anyone in a plane crash.

As for the dates, I think that makes no difference.

MandemChickenShop · 19/08/2026 07:01

It's very distasteful actually. Try to be mature about it and have a nice trip.

So what? She’s using a nickname … are you now off to try and track her down?!?

FiveShelties · 19/08/2026 07:08

On the 25th anniversary of you know what!!!

Not sure if this is a wind up or you are serious? Whatever it is you are being totally disrespectful.

No but mumsnet has been hacked more than once and its poor Internet safety to post such info

Empress13 · 19/08/2026 07:17

Yep daft! How many flights have you heard of being affected since 9/11 on that date? Theres been thousands! Just go and enjoy!

Popstarrrrr · 19/08/2026 07:19

Same. I'm flying transatlantic on that date. It did register just after I booked it but haven't thought about it again since this thread. I need to be at my destination on 12th September and have a work event I cannot miss on 10th September so a bit limited anyway 🤷‍♀️.

There are millions of people with that birthdate of the same age … hardly outing.
