AIBU to worry about flying on this date?

DP and I are planning a long weekend away. We're off next month, on a Friday.

I left DP to book the flights and said "please don't book if it's a Friday the 13th."

It's just a weird superstition, I'm sure a lot of us have them.

Anyway he went ahead and it wasn't Fri 13th, so they were booked.

I've just looked at the dates and realised we're flying on September the 11th!!!!! On the 25th anniversary of you know what!!!

I feel ridiculous as it's just a funny coincidence but I'm slightly uneasy. We can't change the flights.

Am I being daft?

Yep. Daft.

enjoy your break, it's just a weird feeling nothing more

PashaMinaMio · 18/08/2026 14:22

Yes you’re being daft!
Feel the fear & do it anyway.

cinquanta · 18/08/2026 14:24

Flights will probably be cheaper.

Hayleylulljah · 18/08/2026 14:24

Itll be cheaper on that date. Would not bother me at all

Can imagine the eulogy... "died trying to save a few quid" !!!

Yes you are being daft. Do you expect all planes to sit on the ground for one day out of 365, forever? What about the anniversary of Lockerbie? Malaysia Flight 17 and Flight 370? Germanwings 9525? All the less famous aviation disasters?
Dustin Hoffman's character in Rainman at least had some logic.

spokenorchid · 18/08/2026 14:26

Every day is the anniversary of some atrocity or another.

This is the world we live in.

Do you always worry like this?

mamajong · 18/08/2026 14:27

Its just a date, same as Fri 13th you are no more or less likely to be involved in anything, you cant let you life be dictated to by random dates - if you look into it most days will have had tragedy and good things happening on them.

stichguru · 18/08/2026 14:28

I think you're being totally daft if you are actually thinking you will not fly that day because it wouldn't be safe. If you are thinking you will be reminded of those who lost their lives that day, as you are flying for holiday just like they were, you aren't being daft at all.

Stopthattrain · 18/08/2026 14:30

You’re being daft. I flew on 11th September a few years ago and only really noticed the date after the fact. As you can tell, I survived. So will you.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/08/2026 14:32

It’s a bit distasteful to reduce the tragic deaths of strangers to a superstition for you. Quite narcissistic honestly.

cinquanta · 18/08/2026 14:49

Thinking about it, I have flown on the 11th of September a couple of times and never gave it a second thought. 9/11 doesn’t register as date in September to me.

Almakarlinsghost · 18/08/2026 14:51

I've flown on both dates, and in fact when I flew on Friday 13th it was the best flight in a long time at a period when I seemed to be hitting lots of turbulent or delayed flights. 😊

I flew into New York on September 10th 2001, and the next year flew to St Petersburg on September 11th.

Subbdue · 18/08/2026 14:52

On the 25th anniversary of you know what!!

Why not name it? Your attitude here feels rather disrespectful, albeit unintentionally.

You are making this all about you. You are as insignificant as the rest of us and a crash is unlikely. Think how many flights have happened on this day every year around the world and get some perspective.

Mumsntfan1 · 18/08/2026 14:54

I often fly on Friday 13th and 11 September. A lot of people must feel like you as these dates are often the cheapest!

elQuintoConyo · 18/08/2026 14:56

It's 9 years today since the Barcelona and Cambrils terrorist attacks, does that mean DH isn't going into work? Or I'm not going to Cambrils with DD for ice cream? No, it doesn't.

Don't ruin a good holiday with ridiculousness.

LittleGreenShoots · 18/08/2026 14:56

I actually think it's one of the safest days to fly. I flew on this date in the US on the 20th anniversary funnily enough. They showed it a lot on the news channels. I think the reminder of what can go wrong would mean security was extra on it that day... if I was planning some kind of an attack, I would pick a day where 9/11 was a distant thought.

Waitingfordoggo · 18/08/2026 15:04

YAB silly and you know it.

You realise there have been quite a few air crashes and terrorist incidents? Would you rule out any date that is an anniversary of a disaster involving a plane? Or just that one? Why?

The Lockerbie disaster happened on December 21st. A Malaysian Airlines plane disappeared on 17th July. An Air India plane crashed on 12th June last year.

So there are three more dates to avoid (and loads more besides) if you want to try and be consistent about this.

SapphireSeptember · 18/08/2026 15:30

I remember being in London (using the Tube) on one of the anniversaries of the 7/7 bombings. I didn't even realise until looking at my train ticket months later. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 18/08/2026 15:35

“Of you know what!” Is incredibly disrespectful. Grow up.

nrp2 · 18/08/2026 15:41

Honestly OP - if you go looking you'll find that pretty much every date of the year is connected to some aviation crash (yes some small and years ago but still matters to the families left behind)

You're also being very disrespectful in the way you've worded your post

bugalugs45 · 18/08/2026 15:51

My brother flew to NY a year to the day after 9/11 , because understandably the flights were cheap ,
his argument was the security will be better than ever on this date .

Gastropod · 18/08/2026 16:02

I used to be a nervous flier and one of the good pieces of advice I got from a fear of flying course was to stop looking for "omens" before a flight. It's a common thing that anxious fliers do, but these omens are not real - there is no such thing as a good or bad omen, and thinking this way will just feed into the anxiety. It's a vicious cycle, so it's best not to engage in those thought patterns at all, if you can avoid them.

bananaobama · 18/08/2026 16:10

Oh, for gods sake

get a life

😂

givemushypeasachance · 18/08/2026 16:13

I'm flying on 11 September this year. Just briefly thought "huh, anniversary of 9/11, hey ho".
