I know, I’m going to get a load of YABUs as I love this time with my precious children’ but there are still three weeks left, I’m skint and having to muster the enthusiasm for another day out because the alternative is worse!

You can feel how you want to feel.
I personally LOATHE term time. It’s such a slog getting my kids to their various schools on time and dressed with the right equipment. I hate the school run with a passion and literally spend all year looking forward to the little bit of peace I have from the horrific teachers I have to deal with at my DS’ primary.

One of the happiest days of my life was when I no longer had to do the school run

I have boys and I can tell you one thing in all my 19 years of parenting them all so far that they need constant exercise! They need outdoors.

Ah. I see.

Are there anythings you can do for peanuts at home? Eg go to the supermaket and take a dozen boxes and get the kids to use them to build a rocket or a car in the garden? Or make pasta necklaces/jewellery? Make playdoh and use it?

Just brainstorming, but we did all sorts of things for beavers/brownies that were cheap? Pepto bismal dropped into a cheap bottle of soda creates a foaming fountain that can be fun?

Nah, the truly disgusting part was that you tried to pick a row with a struggling mother and became all sanctimonious.

Kind of disgusting and embarrassing for you.

Ooh Pinck
best you pop off now back to your pretend American imaginary children

Hobnobswantshernameback · 17/08/2026 18:55

Oh and if you're husband is Irish you can't live in the UK
we're a different country
amazing levels of knowledge there
maybe you should go back to school

Are you all SAHMs? I always worked part-time and we took 2 weeks for a family holiday. Otherwise DD was in holiday clubs. On my non-work days we did some trips, living in London does make it easy. I had a season train ticket, DD was free, we did plenty of the free museums, took a sandwich and then just had a coffee and cake.

The odd days out but we always have National Trust membership, English Heritage for 2 years and some other annual tickets every so often.

At home we had some lazy days, some things like clearing out her room, sorting through toys, library visits, cooking, baking, we swapped kids with friends for an afternoon.

But even then I was glad when school re-started. DD is ND so changes to routine is always bad.

What a load of crap this thread is. People moaning about their children .

It's quite offensive also to people who might have lost their children. They would give anything to have their kids back on their summer holidays
Br careful what you moan about. It's so pathetic the moaning and arguing.

I think it will be a good thing if mn is sold and aibu is revamped
There really is a load of boring samey old crap on here.

I’m super sad and feel the holidays are nearly over already. That being said. I only have DS one day a week. He spends 1 day with daddy. 2 days with my parents. 1 day with DH mum. The same arrangement as term time. I’ve done more fun day trips on the day I’m off work with him as he doesn’t have his morning swimming lessons. I’ve loved that freedom.

So although DS routine hasn’t changed much, he has. He absolutely hates school. Cries all the way there etc. is so sad and grumpy the whole week. Only happy on weekends.

These holidays have felt amazing, I’ve only taken the odd additional day off with him but wow he’s been happy for the whole holidays solid. His behaviour is better although not perfect. I’m honestly dreading the return to school. Breaks my heart daily.

We are a 1 child household for most of the week but have DSD weekends and two days a week (weds and thurs). She is a delight.

I hope all hols are like this.

I love the holidays and I only have my child one day a week are rather contradictory statements!

@pinck I have no idea why you’re having a go at me. I haven’t said a word about America; I don’t know enough about it as a place. Others have, yes. But tbh if you reply to a thread trying to piss people off you can’t be surprised when they are pissed off.

With that logic, you can't moan about anything on MN in case other people's husbands/ mums/ dads/ pets are dead.

NewNameW · 17/08/2026 19:01

When I got off work today my 6 year old asked me if they could go knock on doors to find friends to play with so it's less boring for her.

She's itching to get back to school and play with her friends. I'm sad that she's sad.

LBFseBrom · 17/08/2026 19:02

Didimum · 17/08/2026 17:08

Why did you have children if you don't enjoy spending time with them?

Joking. My two are arguing horrendously every day.

That's not fair, everyone has down days and runs out of ideas sometimes, never mind money!
........
I've always lived on the outskirts of London. Mine played in the back garden with neighbours' children except on days when I went to work (part time), they'd set up camps, have concerts. All I had to do was supply food and drink, it was fine. Husband took some time off. When old enough to be out alone they'd go to the park or simming occasionally but all seemed to prefer being in our house or garden.

One thing I was glad about was they never woke up early, we all had plenty of sleep.

We'd have a few days out, taking them further afield, but couldn't afford that all the time as well as our holiday.

Later on they have more interests and do their own thing, make arrangements, but these young days are precious times.

I remember when I was a child I was quite solitary, there was no running around and squealing. I was very imaginative and read a lot.

Do you actually have any kids? I wonder if you going about those with no kids includes yourself? If that is so then you wouldn't understand. I have an SEN kid. It is relentless. Both me and my husband are struggling and the kid is an IVF baby. I don't genuinely care what others might think.

You can't, oftentimes.

"I'd give ANYTHING for my mum to still be here to steal from me!"

That's why i admire hime educators. They are comfortable having their children around them all day and are not looking to push them off and relying on the school to give them a break.

Everyone knows about school holidays when they have kids.

So irritating and obtuse you just had to post it twice 😂

blackcurrantsuponus · 17/08/2026 19:04

And tbf @Netcurtainnelly i haven’t moaned about my children much they are nice children but I do find them a lot to manage together; my eldest is struggling with a variety of things and is a bit difficult and I’m trying to stay patient but fail miserably some days and then have mum guilt on top of everything else. My car needs seizing and condemning as an environmental health hazard too.

What else do you do otherwise? I think social media plays a part too - you see people out doing wholesome hikes or galleries or museums and feel bad. Mine have been swimming, cinema, libraries etc but it doesn’t feel very enriching in comparison with others. I often feel like deleting social media over the summer holidays as it throughly depresses me (I realise this is a me problem and comparison is the thief of joy etc etc).

It may not seem as enriching but, honestly, the best enrichment you can give to your kids is to leave them to get bored so they learn to entertain themselves. My parents would ship me to my grandparents for summer and all entertainment I had was trips to the allotment and a few family visits. But I did spend the whole summer in fresh air, helping with DIY projects or just sitting in the garden with a book. I have lovely memories of helping granny to cook and bake, digging potato trenches with my grandad and lying on my tummy for hours watching the ants relocating their nest before the rain. As an adult, I absolutely never feel bored and have diverse sets of interests and skills.

Flowers

One thing I am genuinely grateful to MN for is that it’s given me a real insight into the lives of those with children with SEN and I hope I am a kinder and more tolerant person as a result and raising my own children to be the same.

blackcurrantsuponus · 17/08/2026 19:07

I am a little mixed about the let the kids be bored narrative.

It is good sometimes but it’s age dependent. A three year old isn’t going to get creative with books and crafts; they are going to destroy something. And I do feel even older children need some time managed for them.
