I know, I’m going to get a load of YABUs as I love this time with my precious children’ but there are still three weeks left, I’m skint and having to muster the enthusiasm for another day out because the alternative is worse!

Where we are, they've been on holiday just over 4 weeks and go back in two weeks time, so well over 1/2 way.
I know Scotland go back a lot earlier than England.

Where are you ?

We are in a london borough and most secondaries and primaries by us go back on 7th 😭 took the kids to the Princess Diana playground as a free treat. We had to queue up for 30 minutes to get in and it was positively heaving in there.

Why did you have children if you don't enjoy spending time with them?

Joking. My two are arguing horrendously every day.

What else do you do otherwise? I think social media plays a part too - you see people out doing wholesome hikes or galleries or museums and feel bad. Mine have been swimming, cinema, libraries etc but it doesn’t feel very enriching in comparison with others. I often feel like deleting social media over the summer holidays as it throughly depresses me (I realise this is a me problem and comparison is the thief of joy etc etc).

So they've had some exercise and practiced a life skill, had a bit of culture and practiced their reading? Sounds enriching from over here, stop beating yourself up. Instagram is only a snippet of what somebody does all summer holiday.

This is the reason that 55% of American kids get shipped off to summer camp or academic summer programs.

Come and spend time with my autistic child and you will wish your summer holiday was short.

@blackcurrantsuponus when do yours go back? One of mine is back 1st September or the other is back on the 2nd September.

7th 😭

You also have holiday camps where you can send your kids off for a week or so at a time if you work. Here in the UK you are lucky if you can get one for between 9-3 during the daytime and most don't run all through the holidays. If you can get wrap around care then you've hit the jackpot if not then you take it unpaid. It's not as simple as "you don't get as long as us".

KrazyKatty · 17/08/2026 17:20

DS broke up mid May and will be going back to school at the end of August after having 14weeks off.

I’m really sad that his school summer holidays are almost over. 😭

I can only really talk about what I have found and experienced. I’m not American so I can only speak as a stupid Brit, can’t I?

I know it is absolutely no consolation to you now, but my DC is 23 and goodness knows I really miss those summer holidays.
I used to do things like cinema at home days, garden picnic, silly treasure hunt where there was just a small prize at the end.

Well, it was rather strongly inferred. If that wasn’t the intention, it might be worth noting I’m not alone in having taken exception to it? It was a needlessly unpleasant and rude reply, I’m afraid.

Everyone is dealing with different things and it may be that your above reply could be made to someone dealing with a horrendous situation and make them feel awful.

That's why i admire hime educators. They are comfortable having their children around them all day and are not looking to push them off and relying on the school to give them a break.

Everyone knows about school holidays when they have kids.

Ahh the old "It's not a problem for me, therefore it should be a problem for no-one".

How empathetic 👍

I presume in America you also go by the quote "if you have nothing nice to say say nothing at all"?. Seven weeks feels like an eternity when you have a child who climbs furniture, destroys your house and when you take them out they don't want to do anything. I genuinely would love you to live that and say it is only a short while.

Agree don't people moan . Time goes so quick. Its not the schools job to be a constant babysitter.

I'm sure also people who couldn't have kids would love your position.

Genuine question what do you with them for that period? How do people manage their jobs? Is it just the norm that most children would go to a summer camp?

blackcurrantsuponus · 17/08/2026 17:33

@Netcurtainnelly i admire them whilst also knowing I could not do it in a million years!

I did know about school holidays when I had kids, it is true. I also knew my baby would sleep through the night from about 12 weeks, my toddlers would never eat crisps or watch TV and I would never tolerate a tantrum. Things … change!
