So angry with dh

CaringCucumber · 17/08/2026 15:41

We'd just come in from shopping. I hadn't heard someone knock on the door but then suddenly heard dh start getting aggressive. He was saying loudly ' why would I think I was in trouble? ' and some other stuff. But so nasty.
I thought someone must be having a go. I had no idea what the hell was going on. I went to the door and it was a young lad about 17 trying to sell broadband. He'd obviously been told to start with that line. I've heard it before.
I told dh to get away and I profusely apologised to the lad. He said it's ok.
I started screaming at dh and swearing. I was so angry. I said what if that had been one of our sons or dgss? I said do you know how aggressive you were being. He said i do now. I said who the fuck am I married to?
He's outside sitting in the garden.

We've been together a long time. He's rarely aggressive. Usually calm.

There'd been no tension beforehand.

It's marred how I feel towards him tbh.

Edited for spelling.

No I'm more concerned at how he reacted to a young lad who's obviously got a job out of desperation.

Anyway he's back in. He said he'd gone and found him and apologised. Lad said don't worry about it. We both apologised to each other.

Am very relieved.

Well, what an extremely fortunate dénouement, which chucks a tablecloth over a lot of peculiar reactions chez vous, and smoothes* out your readers’ various 😳 replies.
Amazing that DH pursued and found this caller, in order to apologise and be cheerfully forgiven. I take it this took place in St Mary Mead.

  • or ‘smoothens’, if you speak in fluent Haircare.

That’s the opening line of the door knockers isn’t it “don’t worry, you’re not in trouble”. I always say I’m not worried. What is it you want? I don’t blame your DH

Dear me! You certainly live your life in the fast lane OP.

🤣

Topseyt123 · 17/08/2026 16:57

I think your DH's reaction to the young lad sounds quite reasonable. I too might have asked him why I would think I was in trouble. I'd then have explained that I don't buy or sell anything on the doorstep and simply shut the door.

Your reaction to your DH though sounds massively over the top. You screamed and swore at him?? Really? Why? I should think if you had left them to their encounter then it would have run its course very quickly.

Perhaps it is you who owes the apology - to both of them. It sounds like you came across by far the worst here.

I get arsey with door knockers myself. I don't owe a damn thing to any fucker who interrupts my day without invitation trying to sell me shit I don't want, especially the bastards attempting trickery tactics. If he started with "don't worry, you're not in trouble" I'd tell him to fuck off and then some.

My husband has taken slight issue at times over me being rude to such hawkers (note: not screaming and shouting) so I told him to fuck off as well.

I have way too much experience to have any patience for the "I've got to come in and check your meter/router/whatever and sign this for more information" load of saleman cobblers. My fucking gullible husband let one giant 6 foot five member of the lying bastards league walk up our hall to our living room while I was sitting in my nightwear one morning. Then I did scream and shout at my husband after telling the bloke to "get the fuck out of my house right now".

I don't give a single fucking shit whose son/brother/uncle/grandad is.

I suppose one cubic zirconia chip in this coalmine of awfulness is that you actually wear ‘nightwear’ when relaxing privately, rather than a stab vest and anti-personnel leather combat trousers! 🙀

Agree completely. In fact our local cable/internet company comes up and down the block and carefully skips my door due to the last time I chased a young man off my porch screaming like a banshee.

I fucking despise businesses that use varying pricing, lowball intro deals etc then jack up the price over time until one day I realize I've been grossly overpaying for service. Then I called and nicely asked for a reduction as had been overpaying for a few years, was told unkindly to stuff it basically THEN when I called to cancel service soon afterwards, they were chasing me around wanting me to sign up again. I told them on the phone to get fucked so they sent a representative for me to tell to his face.

So now whenever anyone comes to my door asking to see my utility bill, my cable/internet bill, etc etc I make damn sure they know not to return. I don't care who thinks I'm crazy. I'll also yell loudly at them as they creep off down the sidewalk.

My late H used to laugh when I did it, told one young person 'sorry she hates your company kid, its a lost cause'

What possesses you starting a thread about you and your DH having a slanging match. You both sound as bad as each other.

sort it out like grownups.

LoveItaly · 17/08/2026 17:03

Screaming seems a completely disproportionate response, abusive on this occasion by the sounds of it.

ModernV · 17/08/2026 17:14

The only person who sounds aggressive her is you. Screaming and swearing!? Absolutely no reason to talk to someone like this, I would be walking out the door.

Why would your husband be in trouble with broadband? . Do you think the lad came out with some joke about him being inappropriate online or something and your husband got offended?

MyDogLikesKayaking · 17/08/2026 17:25

Yeah, this lad was absolutely NOT selling broadband.

HelenaWilson · 17/08/2026 17:33

So this young lad jokingly said “don’t worry you’re not in any trouble”

That would piss me off too. Why on earth would I think I was in any trouble because someone had knocked on my door?

And you wouldn't know at that point he was selling broadband because in my experience it takes them forever to get to the point, even when you're asking them to hurry it up.

Why don't you get a 'no cold callers' sign for the door? Or would that risk cutting off your supply of unnecessary drama?

Dery · 17/08/2026 18:00

It's good your DH apologised. You have tried to justify your reaction but it sounds pretty awful and at least as aggressive as his. I think it is a problematic opening line and I feel sorry for the young people who are being told to say this. Door to door selling is incredibly thankless anyway without being given a bad script. Hopefully, the young lad will come up with another opener.

KateBushAgain · 17/08/2026 20:00

The lad said ' don't worry you're not in any trouble '.
Honestly if some 17 year old said that to me I’d tell him to fuck off as well .
Rude wee dick.
Your reaction was something else though , you took a strangers side over your own dh?

Innerearitch · 18/08/2026 20:45

MrsBatshitRatshit · 17/08/2026 17:40

The Op should put a “Danger” sign on the door

To avoid people knocking on the home of two people with uncontrollable tempers.

TheThirteenthFairy · 19/08/2026 09:44

Do young lads go door to door selling broadband? I don't think so. This reads like the first page of a murder / mystery book. The husband or wife is found murdered in the kitchen and a neighbour remembers a young lad coming to the door . . .

JustGiveMeReason · 19/08/2026 20:43

Do young lads go door to door selling broadband? I don't think so.

Well, the ones who've knocked my door look young to me.

Of course, my definition of 'a young lad' might be broader than yours.

AppropriateAdult · 19/08/2026 21:24

I think you’re getting a hard time, OP - but to be fair your first post wasn’t very clear!

I absolutely loathe cold callers, and also feel incredibly sorry for them because it’s such a thankless job. And when they start off with a stupid scripted line like “Don’t worry, you’re not in any trouble!” I do see red. But I’m always polite, if brusque, and get rid of them fairly quickly. I would be furious if I heard my husband being aggressive and nasty to somebody at the door who was just trying to do his (terrible) job.
