To quietly get rid of kinetic sand gifts?

NinaGeiger · 16/08/2026 14:39

My daughter got 2 sets of kinetic sand for her birthday but so many of these have turned out to contain asbestos that I'm tempted to just hide them away and hope she forgets about them?

Am I being paranoid?

Is there any way I can check for certain which sets are safe? I'm assuming that any that haven't been recalled could still contain asbestos but no one's tested them yet.

I feel bad towards the kind gift-givers and normally we're pretty relaxed but this freaks me out and obviously safety comes above politeness.

I am at the stage of parenting now that when people buy my kids things that I don't want to deal with I chuck in the bin before we even get in the house. So yeah. Just throw them out. Kids have enough stuff without sand, glitter slime, and 10000 piece bracelet sets or whatever. It may have asbestos, it may not, you can't test it and you're still the fucker hoovering it up.

This made me laugh out loud. Thanks

Kinetic sand is brilliant. It’s nothing like slime, which is clothing-ruining hideousness.

if it’s actual Kinetic Sand - and not a cheap knock-off - it won’t contain asbestos

I don't know about that - some big brands have had sand products containing asbestos like Hobbycraft and Smyths.

Even if it doesn't have asbestos it's an utter pain in the arse and goes grey/brown after one use. I'll concede it's better than slime but give me play doh any day of the week.
1000 piece bracelet sets make a lovely regift to people you're not fond of. So I hear 👀

Snufkin88 · 16/08/2026 15:02

I really don’t blame you for quietly getting rid of them , for a variety of reasons

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/08/2026 15:05

I don't know about it but I do know that sensory play is so important to kids and yet so many parents don't allow it for fear of making a mess. Anything that keeps them busy using their hands and away from screens is good I think. All that said, your house your rules. If its unopened a charity shop might take it. Don't feel guilty binning it if this is what you want to do.

If it's the actual kinetic sand it should be fine because Spin Master tests the sand for asbestos regularly. Also, a big part of the problem is that the loose dry sand makes it easier for asbestos to become air bourne when it's played with so it can be inhaled by the kids, because kinetic sand is bonded with silicone etc it makes it much less likely that any asbestos will be air bourne. It's easy to make yourself though if you'd rather do that, I do because it's cheaper apart from anything else.

Whattheheckhappenedthissummer · 16/08/2026 15:13

I loathe kinetic says, play dough, paint and slime.

I know … I should get over it but I really can’t.

BlackRowan · 16/08/2026 15:14

I didn’t know some brands contain asbestos:( we had several months of play out of one kit recently but I don’t want to buy it again for some time, no matter how much I tried it ended up everywhere of course.

now 2 days ago my mom bought my kids 1 litre of slime in TK Maxx and I’m about to lose my mind 😪

PenelopeChipShop · 16/08/2026 15:19

Chuck it and don’t even give it any more thought! I didn’t even realise there was an aspestos risk but even without that, if it’s about the mess, YANBU it’s your house.

curious79 · 16/08/2026 15:21

If it is the actual proper brand Kinetic Sand it is safe. If it’s some kind of Amazon knock off then bin asap

Oliwiaa · 16/08/2026 15:23

So far it's been craft sand and sand used as filling that has been recalled I think.

I would keep genuine brand Kinetic sand, but would definitely chuck any knock off Amazon/Temu stuff.

LancashireButterPie · 16/08/2026 15:23

All this shit is so bad for the environment.
In my day we had home made play doh and we're happy. But then again I'm from Lancashire where we still live in mud huts.

SunnyRedSnail · 16/08/2026 15:24

@NinaGeiger YABU.

Kinetic Sand is a brand name and "proper" (branded) kinetic sand is fine. It passes all safety checks.

It is the cheap Chinese import crap that needs that needs throwing away.

I hear where you’re coming from but this is so bad for the planet. all this cheap stuff just becomes immediate landfill. Better to regift or take to a local charity shop, donate toa school raffle, so it has a second life

Oooo10000 · 16/08/2026 15:45

Kinetic sand keeps my granddaughter occupied for ages and she is very imaginative with it . We have the branded one.
Any toys not waned would go to charity shop if unopened.

FlowerFail · 16/08/2026 15:46

I hated it, threw it out at the first opportunity

It’s years since I had any (was given some as a present for then 2 yos birthday) but what are they actually supposed to do with it?

This! There's so much I would put up with but not sand...from the devil 🤣

FlatCatYellowMat · 16/08/2026 16:27

My kids have known from a young age that slime and glitter aren't allowed in the house, and we tried kinetic sand and it also got added to the list. They once got silly putty for Christmas, and promptly left it on the sofa cushions to sink in, so that got banned too.

Sand is for beaches. Playdough is OK as it washes off (any 'messy play' that's washable is fine - shaving foam, playdough, ooblek etc).

I never knew about the asbestos, but as others have seen, it's not dry, so as long as it's branded I'd hope the danger was very, very low - but if you're worried, and just because it's a nightmare, absolutely get rid.

It's just sand, they play with it like in a sand pit or the beach. It sticks together like wet sand but is dry.

Lifelover16 · 16/08/2026 16:45

Throw/ charity shop it if you don’t want it in your house, and I don’t blame you .
There a plenty of other things around for sensory/creative play if your child likes it - cooking, gardening, fabrics, musical instruments, water, wax crayons, foodstuffs, nature. Im sure you and your child can come up with more.

Ive never seen kinetic sand change colour!! We love it here- I think you’re either a kinetic sand house or not, our in laws binned it without opening because it looked messy, whenever dn comes over here he plays with it, I suggested they get him some more and the look, but then they hated play dough too!!!

Could you not put in in a charity shop.
