Camping dilemma since fire alert

Off camping next week but been told no cooking stoves allowed now - so no hot water, no hot food.
There’s no pub or shops nearby either.

The site is saying we are inside 14 day cancellation so they are charging to move the dates back and we’ll lose full amount if we go elsewhere (although not even sure where else since the phone alert).

Camping with kids, with no hot food or drink - would you do it?

Does anyone know a site where we could cook still?

I want to use a camping stove to boil water.

Use Uber eats or deliveroo for food options.

Does the campsite have food vans visit? Many CAMC sites have visiting fish and chips cans, pizza vans etc.

Eat a hot meal in the daytime when you are out and about and have cold stuff in the evening.

The campsite may well set up something temporarily if they don't have a shared kitchen usually. These are exceptional circumstances so worth checking.

Using a camping stove elevated off the ground is perfectly safe. There are no sparks emitted from camping stoves.

none of the sites I use have showers 🙈 they are £7-10 per night, it’s a cheap way to have a break

That article is talking about heaters and stoves being used to keep warm in closed, probably well-sealed 4 season tents halfway up a mountain. Not gonna happen boiling a pan of water for a few minutes. It just isn't.

This. DO NOT USE A STOVE INSIDE A TENT. IT CAN KILL YOU.

No doubt the camp site are inundated with customers in their busiest few weeks of the year and they are trying to manage this along with find solutions.

Give them so breathing space.
eat cold food.
dont stay a full week, just do 4 nights?
Sure you will be out anyway, can’t believe you are staying next to your tent in the middle of know where for a full week.

You will be fine, take something already heated in a big flask for the first evening. Cereal for breakfast, lunch out - doesn’t have to be expensive, think Greggs or a big pizza to share etc, and nice sandwiches/picky bits in the evening. Just buy a coffee on route to wherever you’re going.

That said, if I’m going anywhere for more than a weekend I always book somewhere with electric hookup and take my induction hob/airfryer. Makes life a lot easier and I like to eat decent food if I can

I think breakfasts and lunches are doable but trying to think of a week of cold dinners when your will get a maximum of 2 days out of the coll box and no way to reheat is a real challenge. You will have to eat out in the evenings or travel home each day via a supermarket to pick up cold meats and salad.

How far is the nearest town op?

Is it? Disposable BBQs are specifically mentioned (that’s because people tend to use them directly on the ground rather than raised) but not non-disposable ones, and camping stoves are not a fire.

That said, I didn’t get the alert but that’s based on the screen shot on bbc news.

That's weird, we are camping in the region where the french forest fires were and they only banned outdoor cooking and bbqs, so as long as your gas stove was under a gazebo or in a tent it was absolutely fine. Can't you just take a small jet boil thing and hide it? Just use it in your tent on a table (assuming you have a large tent with space for a cooker etc) it'll be fine, eat inside, they wont know. A proper stove setup on a table top would be far safer though, it's more bbqs outside and close to the ground that are the problem, they just blanket ban because people are stupid! We light our gas stove with a spark thing so bar the actual gas flame we arent messing around with lighters or matches and naked flames.

Also how long is the alert in place, because the temp dropped alot over night

so you can at least have tea and coffee.

If you can afford it (or know a prepper!) you could rent or borrow a portable power station and take an induction cook top.

Since it's hot I wouldn't find this quite so bad, but I wouldn't be pleased! Have orange juice in for mornings (maybe tomato juice and Bloody Mary fixings if you're still youthful!). Good picnic style food, quiche and salads, etc. Push yourself to move about first thing and in the evening if things cool off. Use the showers if you do need to warm up.

You're overthinking it, it's fine.

When we go we take packets of ready to eat food. Loads of choice, from flavoured rices, cous cous, lentils and beans etc. Kids love cold baked beans and spaghetti, snacks, fruit, cereal, tinned tuna etc. Buy a hot pasty or sausage rolls from asda or a cooked pizza deal. There's chip shops as well. Pack a cool bag of prepared meals.

Obviously you can buy cold food like salads, dips, chips and ice cream as you go as well.

Have a hot breakfast Day 1 before you leave.

It honestly fine. The point of no electric camping is that its basic and youre connecting with less so stop worrying about the food because i guarantee you the kids will be happy with whatever you chuck at them as long as they think its fun.

I imagine until the UKs had sufficient rain that fields etc aren’t just covered in dry vegetation.

It is about drought rather than temperature.

Dry grass and wood burn easily.

Week old sandwiches with no ability to refridgerate?

There's no pub or shop but obviously there'll be a dominos and a Chinese nearby.

No tea or coffee, no milk, no refridgeration, no heat, you can eat crackers, crisps, cereal bars, dried fruit, nuts. That's not a holiday

I think they're out of order to not even allow you to move the dates foc.

It’s not about the temperature, it’s about how dry the ground is.

@SaturdayGiraffe I would still go. Take things like tinned food, tomatoes and lots of bread and crackers. It'll be fine. Less washing up!

Find a local chip shop.

Whilst I understand the sentiment I think the campsite is being less than helpful
surely they could find some arrangement of providing a kettle and an induction hob somewhere that people could have access to .

I would still go but stick to cold food and drink at the site with the odd meal and drink out at a cafe or pub when out and about. Sandwiches, salads, snacks and cold drinks at site. It is a safety thing but shame to miss out. When I hike I just take cold food

How would you manage without an electric hookup anyway for your fridge to keep your food you want to cook cool? We have a gas fridge we take when camping without electric, how would you manage anyway if there was no shop? You couldnt even buy ice for a cool box without a shop (which milk will struggle to last in much over a day anyway).

I’m fairly sure you can buy car kettles you use with your car’s cigarette lighter - might be worth a quick look on amazon.

Well, no, noone would stay by the tent for the whole week. Its just a base.

But for us, a lazy, morning coffee on at the tent is part of the holiday.

Its the lack of options to boil water that would be the killer for me...I wouldn't want to go without a coffee when waking up for a whole week and having to have the faff of driving every morning for that would be off putting.
