Oh My God Reaction GIF

AIBU to think the alert was unnecessary? I get wildfires are an issue but informing the public not to use bbqs isnt a life and death situation.

Wildfires are increasing year on year. It is very worrying. https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/uk/wildfire-total-for-2026-in-england-and-wales-reaches-same-as-whole-of-last-year/a/159941263.html

Alert fatigue ffs
we have had 2, get a grip

ElsieMc · 15/08/2026 09:58

Think they got it right. I live near a beach with byelaws prohibiting fires and this year has been so bad the council have had to obstruct access with rocks.

I have been a victim of an idiot ndn firestarter. It began with him burning rubbish within metres of our oil tank. He had a cleaning business and rammed his garage full of equipment and chemicals. Until it set alight. It burnt down 3 garages, our hedge and if the wind was toward us our home would have been lost. It was the full works, huge explosions and 3 fire engines attending.

He cleared off. He knew there were children in our home. He said as it was accidental, I should get over it and called me mental.

My thoughts are with those who have lost their homes.

Exactly.

So we now need to have a very loud alert for every piece of information that people who are "thick as pig shit" need to know for public protect? And that will have to happen, what, every year to catch the new comers?

You are other pps accusing posters of ignoring how dangerous wldfires are are missing the point somewhat.
I don't think anyone has said wildfires are not a matter of life or death, have they?
Pps are saying that the alarm warning system was set up to alert people of imminent danger, not to warn them not to do something that MAY cause danger.
As pps have said, why was there no warning to avoid looking directly at the eclipse or to remember to wear sunscreen?
The warning system was not set up to tell people how to behave. It was set up to warn people of imminent danger.
On that basis, it should not have been used tonight.

Well, most of that is not really comparable (ie the eclipse and sun screen, I do have replies but I think they’re just not relevant, iykwim), however, I shall reply to your imminent danger comment (although I know I’m possibly wasting my breath and abusing my poor arthritic thumbs). Can you genuinely not understand that these fires can and are imminent? Like one could start literally this minute near where you are.

Think of the places where the wildfires started. Think of one mistake or stupid or careless act and POOOOOFFF! Up it all goes. Just like that. Anywhere and at any time. So in that sense then yes, I do think the alert was necessary. The problem is people are still doing things that are dangerous, so if the only way to make everybody aware has unfortunately meant it has been delivered as an alert.

People living in areas such as Stoke, Stourbridge and the New Forest (Devon and Hampshire), for example, may well have been saying the same thing had that alert gone out last week. Most of England and wales is in an official drought, as you know, and is literally a tinderbox where the slightest spark can cause absolute destruction very, very quickly. So in that - admittedly broader - sense I do think the alert was necessary. If people already heeded the warnings not to use disposable bbqs, discard cigarettes, leave any glass etc then the alert wouldn’t have been needed. How are we supposed to get the message across in a way that gets people’s attentions if it hasn’t happened so far? I am honestly not being combative, but it does frustrate me. God knows what the longterm damage done to the countryside, and all those differing wildlife and fauna will be. But it won’t be good. Especially areas that are really important to the protection of certain species. The NF, for eg, (I don’t know the other areas well, but assume many are similar) has many such areas of scientific interest and programmes of releasing once almost extinct wildlife/fauna etc

Personally I think disposable bbqs should have been banned years ago and the govt have failed, this will be the last heatwave for the year so most of the bbq season will be at an end in a couple of weeks anyway. But there’s no significant rain forecast down here any time soon. A few light showers or drizzle mext week, mid-weekish, but it’s not going to be enough. Especially where I live (not too far from one of the areas, that I love, which may be why I feel so passionately about it), it’s going to take a lot of rain before it starts soaking into the ground and until then we’re sitting on a time bomb which can be set off by an idiot having a bbq in a completely dry forest at any time.

A few more fires in areas that are already burning may be all it takes to start seeing masses of joined up fires spreading across huge swathes of the midlands or south coast or wales. We are basically a small island, with an awful lot crammed in, we live close to our neighbours, countryside just up the road from many of our towns and cities and these fires are jumping roads, the whole country is like kindling right now.

oh I’m sorry about how long that is! But I hope you can accept this reply as genuine concern, and nothing more.

IlikethoseBalenciagas · 15/08/2026 10:47

So many people don't watch the news or read newspapers though. Their lives are Love Island and tiktok.

Which is why we need these warnings shoved in our faces once in a blue moon.

lisaloo88 · 14/08/2026 20:52

It the fire was around the corner and I needed to evacuate, but it wasn’t, it was absolutely pointless

Well, it only takes one idiot to throw a cigarette in your garden, or in a bush, and it could be happening to you at any minute. Don’t you think the people in the areas that have lost everything thought it would happen to them? And so sudden and fast. Turn the alerts off if they bother you, but it would be better use of your efforts to just open your eyes and start thinking further than the 1sqm that you’re stood in.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/08/2026 11:24

The alert was sent out at the request of the Fire Service.
no-you didn’t have a heart attack, no you weren’t scared out of your skin, no you didn’t crash.

get a grip. It was for the greater good and only the second time used I think? Hardly overload.

I wouldn't call that accidental! People burning shite in their gardens are idiots.

Itsasecretnow · 15/08/2026 11:28

I think the main problem we have here is the sudden waking up to serious climate damage that this summer has shown us. Most of us realise it’s happening, and seemingly faster than we ever thought, but others still don’t care or just don’t believe a word of it. These are the people likely to be the ones that left the bbqs, cannot see beyond their own gratification and just don’t care about anything that happens around them, or the consequences. How else are we ever going to get to these people? The fact that some people are hung up on whether the alert should’ve been sent or not rather than the apparent need for it to happen and the reasons why it did. You need to think wider and further.
Bloody Hell, who knew I’d get so passionate (and slightly wound up) by this topic?! 😄 I think I’ve probably raised my blood pressure with every comment I’ve posted 😂 I need to step away for my health!

That’s a bit harsh. Guaranteed the people who are throwing cigarettes in bushes etc aren’t going to bothered about a government alert. Unless you live under a rock you will have heard about the wildfires and how to reduce risk. The alert is for something like an imminent threat to your local area not a potential scenario. I have had a very near miss for having a house fire when my fusebox caught fire due to a fault. Fortunately I sorted it without even having to call 999. I understand that it is catastrophic when homes get caught in wildfires but I think it panicked people unnecessarily and was done for the wrong reasons.

It certainly is for people whose houses are in the path of the fires. The alert has got people talking and maybe realising how serious it must be to have to to this. Job done

Cojones · 15/08/2026 18:32

I’m all for the bbq ban. Fire can spread so fast.
I am working in Birmingham, in our team one young person drove past a road on her way home. Her dashcam captured a house on fire. It was so close to the passing traffic, and she lived only 5 minutes away from it all. It is scary.

Have you met people? We still have flat earthers, climate change deniers, people texting while driving in the middle lane, Reform voters, Trumpers, and people who think you can catch a biological virus via electromagnetic frequencies. Do I even need to mention the Sycamore Gap fuckwits, whose combined IQ wouldn't break 80? These are not isolated idiots.

In my experience, most people are ignorant, self-absorbed dumbfuck morons. So yes, they need to be told to not light fires in case of wildfires. They need to be told not to buy injectable medicines from random individuals on Facebook FFS, yet they still do it.

I really feel like you've drastically overrated the intelligence of the general public. Halve your expectation of their cognitive abilities and you'll be less disappointed. Sadly, you'll still be disappointed.

In this weather? A vital ban. You might want to do some research on fires and collateral damage from same...the last 100 years of Victorian and NSW fires are a good place to start. But of course you aren't really interested in learning are you

LeopardStar1 · 15/08/2026 20:01

I think a message is reasonable and necessary but what I HATE with a passion is that the THREE messages that my 4 year old was sent, was within the same evening, during her bedtime, it continued and got louder and louder until I actively switched it off by pressing the button to say I'd read the message. One of the messages then started speaking the warning out! A simple text would have been fine like in covid. And yes my daughter has a phone next to her bed because she's T1D and it's her medical device. If your a parent who has just spent an hour settling their child you know how I felt when that alarm went off on the phone next to her!

Where I live the dual carriageway central reservation was on fire yesterday! I think it's a great idea to remind people not to have BBQs or start any kind of fire in this weather, it's not just farm land and open fields that are burning.

Hrft but agree, we are edge of small town and the playing field near us burnt yesterday.

Not the fire here particularly that's the problem, but firefighters are stretched way thin.

Realworld10 · 15/08/2026 20:29

Unfortunately not! There here have cases of some idiots having fireworks/balloon release which led to a wildfire locally. As always, these types of warnings and rules (which are prevalent for months in hot countries) need to be drummed into those who don't think rationally or safely.

FlyingCatGirl · 15/08/2026 20:41

Mumtotornadoes · 14/08/2026 20:14

It was bloody annoying and unwarranted. It's going to make people ignore it in future. It's supposed to be for imminent threats actual emergency messages. Not "don't have BBQs this weekend" then it's going to be "don't swim in lakes this weekend" "don't use your hosepipe" "don't put cardboard in the general waste bin" it should be reserved for actual emergencies.

Too many of you don't seem to understand why we got that alert! The fire service asked the government send it! You won't get all the silly messages you are having a tantrum about because it wasn't the government who decided to send it, the fire service asked them to send it because they are up to their tits in fire fighting! There's been numerous fires in my area because undisciplined kids think it's great holiday entertainment! 19 households lost their homes and everything they own yet you are throwing a tantrum?

And when did people like you decide what the alert system should be used for? I spent a fortnight travelling around Transylvania and the alert system is often uses for severe weather warnings and bear sightings etc. A lot of you are just making it up in your head what you think it should or shouldn't be used for!

That would be a good reason to disable the alerts on that device. I don't have them on my second phone.

If you lived near the New Forest you would not be saying that. How stupid can some people be!! Fire IS life and death or are you superhuman?
